Zeroing in On.... Domonique Foxworth Broncos DB

The Player
Third year cornerback was slated to start before Denver signed All Pro Dre' Bly in March. "Having Champ ( Bailey, a star DB) and Dre' is exciting but fustrating." " I could start at corner on any other team. To be honest, I think I can start at corner on this team."

The Mentor
This American Studies major out of Maryland (he graduated early with a bachelor's degree) gives high school students a "college tip of the month" at collegeincolorado.org (The summer months are the most critical.....Don't take the summer off"). He also teaches writing at a Boys and Girls Club in Denver. " I bought a bunch of books so I could bone up on my grammar,'' he said on his blog.

The Memorialist
To honor teamate and friend Darrent Williams, who was killed in January, Foxworth is helping build a teen center named for Williams in Denver. "People want us to pay tribute to Darrent by winning a Super Bowl," says Foxworth, a rookie with Williams in 2005. "That would sell him short. He was more than a football player."

Does anyone think that Foxworth is going to leave us when his contract is up so he could be a starter somplace else?

I sure hope Broncs can keep him around. They will need his leadership

I'm sure there are plenty of places he could start like Miami, Cleveland, and some others right away, but I think he'll realize that if he stays here for at least another contract and learns more from Champ and Dre, that it'll improve his game for the rest of his career and who knows, he may stay and take over for one of them if they get injured or some reason, retire/cut.

Its a very real possibility, but he's under contract for this year as well as a RFA next year, so if anyone wants him they can cough up picks. I hope we give him a first round tender myself, while Paymah can probably slip by with compensation equal to his draft spot (3rd rounder).

I don't think its a safe assumption to place Bly opposite Bailey for the next 5 years either. He's better than Foxworth right now, sure, but he is 29.

And don't bring that crap about Bly's contract being too big for us to afford Foxworth. Dwight Freeney, a pass rushing specialist, just got $12M per. Nate Clements got 8 years at an AAV or $10M per season. The cap is skyrocketing upwards and player contracts are close behind. Having Bly on a 5 year, $33M deal, so an AAV of just over $6.5M, is going to look very smart in a few years.

A bunch of baseball teams are grinning thanks to some smart signings in the winter of '03/'04 when "market correction" lead to guys like Tejada and Vlad Guererro signing $12M and $15M AAV deals respectively. You put those guys in the market now, 4 years older, and they both get significantly more due to market inflation picking back up again. We're seeing the start of that in football now, and its a savvy football team that gets talent locked up quickly before the price climbs even further.
