Sex Ed for Kindergarteners 'Right Thing to Do,' Says Obama
Share

July 18, 2007 1:13 PM

ABC News' Teddy Davis and Lindsey Ellerson Report: Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., told Planned Parenthood Tuesday that sex education for kindergarteners, as long as it is "age-appropriate," is "the right thing to do."

"I remember Alan Keyes . . . I remember him using this in his campaign against me," Obama said in reference to the conservative firebrand who ran against him for the U.S. Senate in 2004. Sex education for kindergarteners had become an issue in his race against Keyes because of Obama’s work on the issue as chairman of the health committee in the Illinois state Senate.

"'Barack Obama supports teaching sex education to kindergarteners,'" said Obama mimicking Keyes' distinctive style of speech. "Which -- I didn’t know what to tell him (laughter)."

"But it’s the right thing to do," Obama continued, "to provide age-appropriate sex education, science-based sex education in schools."

Speaking to a young woman who asked a question about sex education, Obama said, "You, as a peer, can have enormous power over your age cohort but you’ve got to have some support from the schools. You certainly should not have to be fighting each and every instance by providing accurate information outside of the classroom because inside the classroom the only thing that can be talked about is abstinence."

"Keep in mind: I honor and respect young people who choose to delay sexual activity," Obama continued. "I’ve got two daughters, and I want them to understand that sex is not something casual. That's something that we definitely want to communicate and should be part of any curriculum. But we also know that when the statistics tell us that nearly half of 15 to 19 year olds are engaging in sexual activity, that for us to leave them in ignorance is potentially consigning them to illness, pregnancy, poverty, and in some cases, death."

When Obama's campaign was asked by ABC News to explain what kind of sex education Obama considers "age appropriate" for kindergarteners, the Obama campaign pointed to an Oct. 6, 2004 story from the Daily Herald in which Obama had "moved to clarify" in his Senate campaign that he "does not support teaching explicit sex education to children in kindergarten. . . The legislation in question was a state Senate measure last year that aimed to update Illinois' sex education standards with 'medically accurate' information . . . 'Nobody's suggesting that kindergartners are going to be getting information about sex in the way that we think about it,' Obama said. 'If they ask a teacher 'where do babies come from,' that providing information that the fact is that it's not a stork is probably not an unhealthy thing. Although again, that's going to be determined on a case by case basis by local communities and local school boards.'"

In addition to local schools informing kindergarteners that babies do not come from the stork, the state legislation Obama supported in Illinois, which contained an "opt out" provision for parents, also envisioned teaching kindergarteners about "inappropriate touching," according to Obama's presidential campaign. Despite Obama's support, the legislation was not enacted.

No.

Sex is the last thing kindergarteners even think about at that age. Maybe down the road when they get into junior high or high school but not that young. At that point you would already be implanting the idea in their head. Bad move on Obama's part.

The best reply I've heard on another board was: " IT IS OKAY FOR A POLITICIAN TO TELL PEOPLE TO TALK TO CHILDREN ABOUT SEX BUT WHEN SOMEONE IN THE PARK DOES IT THEY GO TO JAIL. "

How could it be age appropriate? Junior High is the soonest it needs to be approached.

There has to be more to this....

Then again, I don't see any problem with a kidergarten teacher explaining that "Boys have a penis and girls have a vagina" (stealing a line from kindergarten cop)

I'd like to see the X's and O's of the curriculum. As an outsider i don't see any reason for this, but with parents so completely uninvolved with their kids maybe some of this is necessary... I'm just not sure.

A bit young IMO

Although I see the point that kids are becoming sexually active at younger and younger ages....kindergarden is still a bit young for that.

5th grade, refreshers & more in depth at 7th grade & again in 9th grade

wait a sec - thats how it went for me in my school days! (jefferson county public schools)

Of course, Jeffco is one of the top public school districts in the nation - maybe Obama should take note?

I give you the idea that many parents dont or wont take it upon themselves to educate their children.

I personally dont plan to be that passive parent and would prefer my son be spared such topic in school until grade 5 or so. (he is 3 now)

Permission slips - just like what was required for 5th grade sex ed when I was a kid. Parents can decide if their child participates in these lessons or not.

I still think its a bit young, and I dont think sex education for kids that young is something every kindergarden teacher in this country has been trained/educated on.

I for one will not be too eager for them to take this on. Consider majority of public school systems out there are underfunded and understaffed and can barely teach kids to read or where Georgia is on a map, forgive me if I dont have 100% confidence in them.

This I dont have a problem with , no way it should be mandatory , but it isnt sex ed as in romancing the sheets , rim jobs , deep throating ,etc ..... I dont think anyone would go for that with their kids , but as far as bad touch / Good touch , that is perfectly in line . how many parents work 2 jobs , and the kids get dropped off at a day care somewhere ?
what if other children from an abusive home are touching them ? ......
yeah it is easy to place all the blame on the teacher for the kid not being able to point out Georgia , never mind if the kid has a learning problem , or has memory troubles , or flat out doesnt want to pay attention ......

LOL yeah, I understood that. I dont think they would go for it in High School let alone kindergarden!

but as far as bad touch / Good touch , that is perfectly in line . how many parents work 2 jobs , and the kids get dropped off at a day care somewhere ?

My home is a dual income household and my son spends 1/2 the week in daycare too. I understand many parents use that as an excuse that they dont have time to talk to their kids. I personally think its a sorry excuse. But yeah, if mom/dad isnt going to teach them...who will? I see that too. But thats not applicable for my kid..and presumably for yours.

yeah it is easy to place all the blame on the teacher for the kid not being able to point out Georgia , never mind if the kid has a learning problem , or has memory troubles , or flat out doesnt want to pay attention ......

Its not that I am blaming the teacher, and its hard to assume THAT many children have learning disabilities.

The public educational system in general leaves a lot to be desired and the joke that is NCLB is an example of it. Many schools are over populated, underfunded and understaffed and quality of education suffers as a result. This is not a personal attack on the competence of the teachers.

I don't know, I was playing "doctor" with the neighbor girl in second grade.

I remember getting kicked out of my neighbor's house for getting caught playing doctor with their daughter when I was 4 years old.

I honestly do not believe that she or I was in it for any kind of 'thrill' other than early & innocent childhood curiosity of the differences between us.

It makes me wonder that if sex ed at too young an age is going to create complexes where kids think their natural curiosities are 'bad' and they start to supress themselves mentally at a young age.

I just think the idea of sex ed at these ages, no matter how remedial the education would be...could possibly backfire on some children and create mental hangups that take a lifetime to overcome.

I dunno....all I do know is I am not comfortable with my kid having sex ed of any kind that young. My wife and I will certainly have our talks with him. But I prefer to leave that conversation out of kindergarden class

Nothing in that article talks about " Good Touch/Bad Touch ". Although i agree with informing young kids about something like that particular issue that is not what this article is pointing out. They are indeed talking about " where babies come from " which has nothing to do with Pedophiles or the likes.

By teaching kids about sex at a young age you plant the idea in their mind and natural curiosity tends to start at an earlier age. I'm an old fart so this may be colored in a manner not fitting the younger generation. We were taught that sex should be saved for marriage. We all knew those that didn't wait, years after we got out of school and many of us were married we found that more than we thought started in high school.

When my oldest kid was in school it was a badge of honor for everyone to get laid before they were Seniors. When my youngest was in school 7 years later it was a badge of honor to brag about getting laid by the time they got to the 8th grade.

The itty bitty town we live in had two girls in the 5th grade pregnant within 4 months of each other.

I guess it's ok to tell 'em young if you want to be a grandparent by the time you are 30.

This should not be a federal issue. It should be decided at local levels.
