Venezuela's leader seeks unlimited presidential terms
BUENOS AIRES, July 13 (RIA Novosti) - Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez will soon submit to the parliament a draft law abolishing presidential term limits.
"The bill will help make amendments to the country's Constitution to lift restrictions on the number of presidential terms," said Cilia Flores, Venezuelan parliament speaker. "The president should have the right to nominate himself an unlimited number of times, since the nation has the last say anyway."
The Venezuelan president is elected by direct vote, and functions as both head of state and head of government. The term of office is six years, and a president may be re-elected to a single consecutive term.
Flores said Chavez could submit the bill before late next week.
"If a Venezuelan president is a wise ruler of his country, he can be re-elected as long as the people of Venezuela grant him confidence," Flores said.
Chavez first pledged to amend the Constitution after he won the presidential election on December 3, 2006. "I do not think we have the right to deprive the people of the opportunity for re-electing the leader they have come to like for a fourth, fifth or sixth term," Chavez said.
Earlier, the Venezuelan parliament granted Chaves vast powers of independent legislative initiative.
The draft law would enable Chavez to make laws aimed at fully nationalizing the country's economy, including energy and telecommunications, within the next 18 months.

You know, if his approval rating weren't in the dumpster....it wouldn't have surprised me at all. Three years ago, I could see him trotting out his We're at war!! horseshat to have made it possible....as apathatic as the American public is on most things like this, I don't think they'll ever stand for that.

Hasn't he already tried to implement that if there is a disaster at the time of the elections that it will forego the elections and he will remain President until it's calmed down? Or something like that.

No, we're just "obsessed" with our own lives. We really couldn't give a **** less about what is happening in Venezuela. At least until the "USS AMERICA" stops sinking!
GET IT?

Your hatred has blinded you to what is happening in the world around you. Bush will be gone soon but those abroad who wish to destroy our country will still be around and probably more powerful because we as a country are too busy fighting over our political indifferences and not focusing on our real enemies.

Blinded? Hardly! Let me put in terms which may enlighten you as to my view of the current state of affairs.
If you have terminal cancer and someone in bum**** Eqypt has terminal cancer, which would you deal with first?
Simple enough for you to understand?

What state do you live in? Sounds like a good candadate.
I don't want to invade anyone. Just want to be aware of what they are doing.

You should consider watching the "enemy within"!

If we got rid of term limits here...I feel confident that WJ Clinton would get elected to a 3rd term long before any Bush ever would

Isn't that sort of why HR Clinton is running? To sort of do an end run around
the Constitution and get Bill back into the White House.

This view probably changes once a Democrat gets into the White House.

Too bad Hillary lacks the appeal and warmth of her husband to get the job done.

I don't really think Bill will be all that involved. There really isn't anything he could do as first lady :). Bill was a decent President, but we can do better. No offense to the present baby boomers, but they need to move on...they and their parents and ruined this country.
Personally I am tired of the bushes and clintons.

I'm sure we are aware (as we can be) of what is going on in the rest of the world.

Besides the US already tried to remove Chavez from power and the people
put him back in power. If they want him, let them have him.

I'm wondering in what way they ruined it. If you mean by electing Ronald Reagan, I'm with ya, but I doubt that's what you meant.
