View Full Version : Crowded House/ Thomas in the Fold

Crowded house: With 12 defensive linemen on the roster, including three draft choices, it's pretty clear the Broncos might have to move a defensive lineman or two. End Kenard Lang could be a candidate. John Engelberger and Ebenezer Ekuban have the best chance of starting, but the team invested first- and second-round picks on Jarvis Moss and Tim Crowder, who are both ends. Lang could be the odd man out.

Thomas in the fold: It has to be a good sign to Mike Shanahan that fourth-round pick Marcus Thomas was the first draft choice to sign. Thomas signed a four-year deal that included a $428,000 signing bonus. Thomas told the Broncos he would be willing to give back his signing bonus if he had off-the-field problems, something the NFLPA wouldn't allow, so the Broncos were glad to pay the money. Thomas had problems at Florida that led to him being kicked off the team.

John Engelberger and starting should not be in the same sentence.

Then again it is ESPN so ignorance is to be expected.

I thought the exact same thing. ESPN is so worried about everything except the real story it is no longer funny.

If engelberger is the best we can trot out there, it'll be a long year for the defense.

EngelBerger is a hardworker. While he my not be the most gifted athlete at his postion, from a depth and ST perspective you really can't do any better.

I agree Garcia. I think people just get upset thinking about Engelberger because of what we had to give up in the trade to get him. Middlebrooks was a hefty price to pay for sure.

Last year, I think he was one of Denver's best defensive ends against the run (which might not be saying a whole lot). Do I want him to start? F no and I think ESPN is insane for suggesting that. But he is a high motor guy and I have no problem with him providing depth on the line. Unfortunately for him - and fortunately for Bronco fans - the line has a much more talent than last year and I think Engelberger will be cut.

I do like his work ethic and motor but I'm not sure that can carry him past Lang, Crowder, Moss, Dumervil, Ekuban etc. on the depth chart. I'm guessing that McKinley may get some time on the end on running downs as well which may leave Engleberger out.

12 D linemen? Didn't Denver have 16 or 17 at the last count?

I love it. Proactive accountability. I hope he can stay straight for his own sake.

I like Engelberger. He gets penetration, and has a great motor.

Didn't Maurice have 'proactive accountability'?

How did we lose money on it? Maurice signed an incentive laden contract with no signing bonus.

I just hope we keep the right guys - there has to be 1 or 2 that rise to the top of the line and hopefully SOON! Bates is notorious for his front 7 so let's just see what kind of puzzle he can make from this box of donuts.

We didn't... you're confused.sorry but i remember it like dean does.

Clarett's second gamble was on his contract. He felt he was a first-round choice and wanted a contract similar to what a first-rounder would receive. To accomplish that, he tried to do get that contract with incentives. The four-year deal he pushed for included no signing bonus.

Now both of you are. You and he are the only ones who apparently have misread my post and so are arguing against nothing right now.

I said "Yes and we cut him and lost no money on it"

to which Dean replied

"How did we lose money on it? Maurice signed an incentive laden contract with no signing bonus."

Odd, because I just said we didn't lose money on it. So I responded with:

"We didn't (lose money)... you're confused (about what I said)."

Too which you said:

"Nuh-uh! We so did! You're wrong! Look at me now, poopy-head!"

Or something like that. Anyway, try to keep up.

Lang fits Bates system perfectly. I would be suprised to see him gone. I think Ecuban might be a more likely canidate for that.
