View Full Version : Mock Update! He's awake!

With many thanks to BroncoBuff and ca412 for tracking him down, we have been able to confirm the whereabouts of Mock, and get the full story. And in Mock fashion, it's a strange one!
You might have heard recently about the Salmonella-tainted peanut butter (http://www.suntimes.com/news/metro/429554,CST-NWS-peanut15.article) that has been affecting people particularly in the mid-west. It appears that Mock was one of the victims.
Here is the story as it was relayed to me (thanks BroncoBuff):
He picked up his mother May 27 or 28 to drive down together to to see his brother David in Arkansas and help with the harvest.
On the way down he became very sick, and told his mother that it was peanut butter. He toughed it out and was taken to a hospital in Little Rock when he arrived.
They gave him medication - and he had a reaction to the medication - his toungue swelled up, and his airway was constricted. He was (still is) in ICU in Little Rock.
He is responding some now, but has a hard time talking (which is largely thanks to the intubation tube they've got in him to keep his air passage open). He whispered to one of David's farm-workers "get me a beer," which they took as a good sign.
I've personally spoken to his mom, and things are looking up. He's had a couple of set backs, but there is a definite feeling of optimism coming out of her, and she seems genuinely touched that his "Internet friends" have tracked him down to wish him well. BroncoBuff was able to actually converse with him. As I understand it, it wasn't so much conversing as talking to him and letting him know that people on the board are thinking of him. Mock's mom says that his eyes lit up during the exchange, but it tired him out and he was resting when I called.
We agreed that it would probably be best if there weren't a whole lot of phone calls from well wishers until it was clear that he was out of the woods. In the meantime, she says that she felt he would absolutely respond well to cards and well wishes sent to his hospital room.
Cards are VERY welcome asap:

Buff an I will maintain contact with his mother to check in on his progress. At some point, he's going to be well enough to talk to friends over here who care to call him. Until that point, it's probably best that we keep it to cards and letters.
...and prayers.

The red on my home color printer is too low right now ... but SOMEBODY with a good color printer should print out a few pages (10-20?) of the "Where is Mock?" threads. That would REALLY help him - that bright happy OrangeMane GUI has gotta be tatooed on every synapse in his brain by now ...
SOMEBODY with a good printer please do that!

cah412 did the real investigative work to find him ... props to cah412 :notworthy
Alhough I can share that the contact he gave me - mock's cousin Randy - was very skeptical. I started in how his internet community is concerned about him (....dead silence....) we would love to know where to send cards and letters (....dead silence...) We really love him, his cat Beezer, the way he loves the Broncos and 'Hornheads' (....dead silence....)
Finally, I kept quiet myself. Then .... after a long silence he says, "give me your phone number." And he called back 10 minutes later and gave me the brother's cel number ;D

Again, stoked to hear Brian is well, but again, I am very disturbed about the privacy and lack of restraint by a few people in contacting a near stranger in real life. The actions taken to contact Brian's family might have led to a good conclusion but it does not justify violating his privacy.

That's where it started... But the reaction to the medication sent him over the edge...
It says on the side of the jar to never add beer to a full mouth of peanut butter. Or was it a full mouth of beer and adding the peanut butter. Catch 22. Happy he should be healthy enough have his life back. But now supply in beer will go up and we will pay more. Also, he comes back with his keyboard. Oh well, I cant wait to see him start a thread on what happened.......... then watch him him hijack his own thread. He is going to tell us not in a nice detailed post but break it down in 2000 posts in the thread to catch up on his post count.
Come on slap you have only a few weeks to close the gap on Mock.
In all seriousness, I hope the soon to be drunk gets healthy. I bet he misses his cat but I guess not more than a beer. Buff, nice to know he wanted a beer as his first statement. He really does need to stay off the sauce for awhile. If only Beezer knew what he said.

I don't know Pez... in watching this mostly from the sidelines (it has been a very intriguing story - one that frankly could make papers, etc..) I think this has been fine. This story is a validation of the human condition. We here have a virtual community. Most of us have never met each other (although all of us tailgaters get to make the real connection as you and I did in Phoenix). But, despite being virtual, just like in a real community, people care about the relative health and well being of the others and there is nothing virtual about that. It is as real and as healthy as it is in your own neighborhood.
If you had a neighbor that you heard from 30 times a day and who was a central figure in the neighborhood and suddenly he disappeard into thin air, you would be ok knocking on their front door. And after a reasonable length of time having no response and no other indication of why he's vanished you would (ok, many would) have the police come and break the door down looking to see if things are ok.
I think the only violation here was posting Mock's real name back early in the story and before he had an opportunity to ok it. But - reaching out to find him and see if he is ok, I have ZERO issue with that. It is a validation that our community, despite being virtual, is in fact a very real community made up of real people who continue to act like real people despite the virtual nature of how we connect.

I dunno.......I tend to agree with Pez on this issue. This whole thing leaves me just as much creeped out as I am relieved that he'll eventually be okay.
I certainly do not approve of his address being posted like it is...that should be handled thru a PM IMHO. If anything like this happened to me, I certainly would not be cool with the way this all went down....but maybe that's just me.

Well - his address has not been posted. The address of a hospital in Little Rock has been posted. I would TOTALLY agree that posting his own personal address would not be ok. Not that you can't find that stuff out with enough diligent work.
But... the issue Pez raised was not the posting of information but actually reaching out to the "complete stranger" cousin to find more information. And I just don't have an issue with that at all in particular in the way that is was done.

His full name and hometown have been posted. So anyone with an internet connection and a brain could now get his address and phone number. I'm with Pez and Hogan I'm not worried about right now but sometime in the future when Mock crosses some internet psycho.

The way I see it, I dont have any problem with people sending Mock get well cards. Its the manner that he was found and contacted that is what is the problem. Unless any of us purposely leave contact information with a friend here on the forum, then none of us should be violating a person's right to their privacy even if we are injured or sick. There is a line that has been crossed here that disgusts me and the people involved in contacting Brian's family unsolicited are what bothers me the most. Especially since there seems to be no concern or ramifications on their actions. Yet. God forbid that someday some idiot rummages through these threads and finds a way to harrass Brian and his family in real life. But whatever, Broncogary wants me to shut the &*** up about it, so I will.
End rant. Go Broncos

Actually my post counted skyrocketed playing Survivor. You make it sound like I was fanatical. I mostly posted Dimwit, a'fkjadslk;f, or buy a vowel. And again I tried to call his home number once, left a message, and never tried again. So I am unclear the attack.

I agree with you to a point. Especially with my bonehead posting of his personal information. But permission was given and thats when the full contact was made. So yours and Pez's arguments are moot. I for one don't just go around looking people up. In fact this was the first time ever and most likely the last. But you and Pez are starting to sound like you are mad because nonone listened even TJ.

His full name and hometown have been posted. So anyone with an internet connection and a brain could now get his address and phone number. I'm with Pez and Hogan I'm not worried about right now but sometime in the future when Mock crosses some internet psycho.
Actually, he has posted his full name and hometown on many sites. I didnt know his full name, only his first name and Iowa as the state. I found his full name and hometown in lookin him up to find out what happened on the floyd little hall of fame site where HE posted that information.
I couldnt find a phone number or address for him even WITH that information however and I am well versed in finding that sort of thing out.
Way I see it, if you want to keep your privacy in tact, dont get on the internet. Dont meet people from the internet, dont converse with people from the internet. But why stop there, just seclude yourself from the world.

For those who are that worried about personal info being found, get your stuff off the internet if you're that worried. This is the age we live in that if you have a name, you can generally find out most of what you need to know (within reason). It really didn't take much work to find his info and I still don't see this violation of privacy that everyone has been barking about. If it's on the internet, it isn't private. It's that simple. Am I gonna go hunting down someone I meet on the internet just for the sake of meeting them? No, that would be overboard... but when the situation calls for it the internet is there for our usage. Once again, if someone can define privacy and tell me where it was invaded, I'd be more than happy to discuss this issue and really see where things stands. If you really think you should be able to exist on the internet and that never be able to find it's way back to you... sorry Jack, that day is long gone.
As for his personal info, I think that once everything settles down then this thread should be censored just as the old ones were. Once the name isn't necessary, no need to keep it displayed.

I knew his full name from the Orangemane March Madness pool. He used his own name on CBS Sportsline when he registered....now whether he MEANT to do that is another thing.
But since he had met some of you in person and exchanged phone numbers with Meck, etc. I think we're in the clear.
I got to thinking "what if it was me?".....Hmmm....well the mods would see my IP address for my workplace and as far as I know only Alec knows my first name. Those 2 things would be easy enough to figure out who I am and where I live (I've posted my town in the past).

I don't post here a whole lot but I do come here to be entertained by those that do. Mock was always somebody who entertained, whether he was upsetting those around him or not I was laughing usually. Let people live how they want and if it don't agree w/ your set of principles, move along. I myself am going to have several friday night jack and cokes in honor of his getting better!

No his wasn't breached because his mom was fine with it and he got on the phone. If MOCK had a problem or decides he does have one then its a different story. Again like STG, Pez, and Hogan I am dropping it. All that matters is that Mock gets well enough to get home and get back on the mane.

Mock couldn't let Beckham invade America with him asleep.
He's gotta catch Posh and that Spice Girls reunion tour too.
Mock treated me like I was a newbie when we first butted heads, not knowing or caring that I had spent the first 30 years of my life worshipping the Broncos and the NFL in general. And then for the next 3 years we both went out of our way to abuse one another. And honstly, I loved taking shots at the guy. Some of the funniest posts and greatest threads here were rips at him.
But when I posted about my wife's Cancer and brain tumors, he sent me a very nice PM, which was a nice gesture on his part. I PM'd him back and told him as much and I told him he was alright in my book. I hadn't had a conflict with him in some time.
Sometimes a gesture does go a long way. I hope the guy does get better.

I had made a post a while back (actually last summer) where I applied out at ACE to get a job over the summer. Mock writes an epic 1,000 word post regarding how he's got these water proof gloves from ACE that are the best ever. . . I think he talked about how Beezer hid them too. So basically, it's just referring to a story he told out of one of my stories.
I mentioned ACE again this summer, and he went bonkers.

I was able to reach Mock's mom tonight while he was awake. She put me up to his ear, and I let him know that people were hoping and praying for him, and that we're looking forward to his return to the Mane once he gets better. He did his best to talk, but with the tube down his throat, it made it difficult for me to understand what he was saying.
In true Mock fasion, he made a joke - but unfortunately, I couldn't understand it. Him Mom was laughing, and I tried to get her to interpret what he was saying, but when she'd get to the punch line, she'd start laughing herself! Ha! I'm not sure what the joke was, but it warmed my heart to know that his sense of humor was still in tact.
After my call with Mock, his brother ended up reaching me, and he gave me a little more backstory... Particularly where it comes to the seriousness of the situation. It turns out that they were afraid that they had lost him. At one point, he wasn't responding to stimuli, and there was a fear that he was braindead. He'd open his eyes, but it was a distant stare that didn't seem to register anything about where he was. But his mom would dutifully sit by his side and talk to him as much as possible. His brother said that they were starting to wonder if they were going to have to make the decision to let him go, when he noticed that when his mother would talk to him, Mock's eyes would start to tear up.
Slowly Mock has started to come around. His amenities were numb to the touch, but it sounds like he's slowly starting to regain the feeling in his hands. I didn't hear anything about his feet and legs, but my thought is that if he's starting to feel his hands, that's a good sign that the swelling is going down.
There's still a concern that all of the swelling may have caused some damage to his gray matter, though there is plenty of optimism, especially considering that he's able to talk and is making jokes. His family feels like his metal faculties are all there, but he's slowed in reaction due to the physical trauma that his body has suffered.
They were very pleased that we managed to get into contact with them. They feel like this sort of love is just what he needs right now, and welcome any cards and letters. His brother said that he knew that Mock was involved with something on the Internet, and wondered how he could get in contact with the people that Mock knew, but he isn't very Internet savvy himself. They're all very happy to learn that Mock has friends out here that care enough about him to track him down.
He's still not yet "out of the woods." He's had some set backs, and there is still a lot to be concerned about. Please folks: if you're religious, say a prayer. If you're not religious, think a few good thoughts about him healing up and returning to form. Please keep any negativity out of this thread, and focus on one thing: Mock getting better.

I'm mailing most of the "Pray for Mock" thread Saturday morning - the one started by SoCal.
The first two "Where is Mock?" threads were not, shall we say, entirely positive ;D If anybody has a chance, just print out an article or two from the OM front page or Denver Post - and stick it in the card-letter so he can read it ... I know that's what I would want.
Great to hear he's joking around.

The more I study on this whole situation, the more I'm thinking that this might not have been an accident. You may recall DomCasual started the thread "If you Died, Would Anybody Tell Us?" ... and then watermock had all this happen a month later. And I do know that Dom is fond of peanuts and peanut products ...

Prayers and thoughts for him and his family. Hope he continues to improve.

Thanks Taco.
Get well Mock.

I've yet to decide if that just makes things funnier or if it's truly a bad thing. If she's an easygoing person and takes it as a joke, that could be hillarious. If she's not a laid-back person... she'll probably be very offended but not be sure why she's offended.

Dude, do you ever have disagreements with a friend or loved one? Have you ever disagreed with a neighbor? Has anyone ever talked to you like you were a stupid piece of chit? If not your one of the lucky few. Most people have and that doesn't mean you wish ill-will on that person and if ill-will befalls that person you wish them well because none of that nonsense means a damn thing when someone is going through a serious health problem or dies. Mock can get carried away no doubt but it's easy to do so behind a computer screen and a case of whatever down your gullet. For the love of God just wish the guy well and take a chill pill.

I remember when Mock first started to use the word "dimwit".
This is a great story, so bear with me is I let this unfold.
FOr a while, Mock was getting out of hand apparently with the insults and taxing Taco's censor tools. In fact, Id wager that most of the words in the censor are a direct result of mock coming up with new and inventive ways to insult folks. Anyway, after a couple of bannings he began to use the word dimwit.
Almost unknowingly when he first began, I had called someone a dimwitted mental midget or something of the like and I immediately got a PM from Mock stating (a direct quote here, I memorized it because it made me laugh).
"Look asshole, Taco has taken everything else away from me, you cant use dimwit, its mine".
I dont send out PM's to anyone, but that one was so funny I was tempted to post a screen shot of it on the forum. Of course, in mock fashion however, there was about 1,000 more words to it, but that was essentially the first sentence.
I cant wait for him to get back so I have someone to argue with formidably again.

Picking up on what baja said - say a brother or cousin you generally always argue with was suddenly in the hospital ... you immediately forget all the arguments and come to his aid, because FAMILY is a 'unifying thread.'
Here, even though we all live in different places, have different interests, believe different things and don't always get along - we ALL love the Broncos! That's the 'unifying thread' for everybody here, and that becomes a quasi-family dynamic. And watermock has never failed to hang tight to that 'unifying thread.' THAT'S why there's such an outpouring - the 'unifying thread' we share every day here is stronger than all the arguments combined.
I did send one "Hornheads" season preview article in the packet this morning, though ... but I wrote a note asking his mother to read that particular article with "skeptcism and annoyance" in her voice ;D

I don't normally post moral things on this site, but this has kind of hit a bone w/ me. I am home on a Saturday night because I broke up a fight 2 weeks ago and got 13 stiches in the bottom of my foot. Normally not a bad injury, but lack of playlets (leukemia) made it serious. I don't care if you hate mock, don't know mock or whatever.... this guy is in a seriouis situation and if sending cards helps; send cards; if sending flowers helps send flowers, bottom line we are all on the same team, and internet trash talking is not going to change that. It hasn't rained in months! The tractor broke down in Arkansas. If it was German made the ****ing thing would still be running! Corn is coming along in Iowa. Beezer keeps looking at me funny I think he's in heat. Screw all you dimwits I was at Mile High chasing tail before you were even born.
This reminds me of the time my brother & I went on bender in Mexico...

Sometimes I wonder if Mock was just an "act" on the board. He pm'ed me a few times and seemed like a nice guy...his pm's were totally different from the way he is on the board.
