View Full Version : Denver Broncos Tackle Strength Training 'Beast'

Before the Denver Broncos players and hopefuls stepped onto the field for mini-camp, they had to face "The Beast," a device hand-built by the team's strength training coach Rich Tuten.

The "Beast" is a 300 pound sled which players must push for 25 yards, 12 times.

Tuten's philosophy is simple. "A strength coach is only good if he makes people do more than they would do on their own."

"I make them work out. I try to make things challenging to them," he said. "They can accomplish but they have to really dig deep to bring it out."

The players know they'll face "The Beast" before they hit the practice field but most accept its value.

"Knowing Tuten, there is a little bit of sadistic stuff going on there," said Chris Myers, Broncos Center. "But it all has value going into the season, going into camp. You get your legs ready."

And it's not just the legs getting a workout.

"When you are running against the pressure the legs are now involved, the shoulder, the back and the arms," said Tuten. "The lungs and the heart, the head because the stomach is feeling sick and your things are pumped until you can't even pinch the skin anymore. Your calves on the fire. The arches of your are just burning."

But Tuten disagreed with how some players talked about the sled practice. "It's not torture, it's building confidence."

"If God gave you more ability than the other person, then God bless you. But if you lose a job, you don't make this team or lose a game or a championship because the other guy or other team out-worked you, then shame on you."

I love Tuten. I think his work helps the Broncs pull out one or two close games a year.

I've always wondered if his training style had anything to do with the Bronco's second half of the season collapses these last several years.

If hear several people float this theory and it's just plain silly. Training gives you more energy and makes you stronger. It boosts your immune system and you recover from injury faster because your body gets better at rebuilding itself.

Sorry Kahn I do not consider you an authority on this. I will continue to wonder

We wear down because our team was finesse and until they add some bulk, which they sort of made an attempt to do so this year, we will continue to do so. Speed is great but it often means smaller and lighter and that means it doesn't hold up to punishment.

Baja, do you think we're the only team in the league that has grueling off-seasons? You know the Patriots are known to run a pretty nasty camp themselves. It didn't make them "fade late".

Ahh...the infamous sled.

There are three things that we are guaranteed to see written about in the offseason every single year without exception:

1. Rich Tuten working their asses off with the sled...they are really going to be in tip top shape this year boys!!! (Heh.)

2. The obligatory "this year we are letting our DL loose" article. We didn't suck at DL last year....they just weren't let loose.

3. "X" young unproven WR is really lighting it up.

This is a myth. They have only promised to "let them loose" once and that was last year. Every year they promise to bring guys in the help, but to date none of those have really panned out - except for Ekuban.

I've seen it a bunch of times dude, over the course of pretty much every year since 2002. I think the only year when we didnt have articles like that was before the 05 season when Trevor was grumbling that the line would be the whipping boys and I think Coach Patterson sorta said the same thing in a Q and A and M. Myers also....I might be wrong but I think every offseason except for that one for several years, I can recall seeing some kind of small variation of the "We are gonna let the DL loose" article in the papers.

Well before '04 we were actually getting sacks, so I'm not sure why such an article would be posted. I don't remember any from the '03 offseason and I was kind of out of it '02 because I had just come back from Korea, though I do remember our D-line doing pretty well.

After last year I started wondering that myself. They were looking like whooped dogs later in the season. Especially at home you would think we would have the edge in conditioning in the thin air, since the team is more acclimated to it. But the other teams just looked to have more stamina for whatever reason. Im sure it was a point of emphasis on Shanahans to do list. Conditioning, red zone offense, turnovers, score more points than opposing team , thus adding weapons on offense and fat guys on defense.

Whats with Chris Meyers talking to the media in the article and video? Nalen has to bitch-slap him. Screw the league's new rules.

2nd half collapse is purely coincidental... and last several years? How many games did the team lose in the 2nd half in 2005?

Dont forget the backup scrap squad rocked the chargers in the season finale. Or were they, in your opinion, rested?

The team fell apart last year due to Larry Coyer's blaring inadequacies as an NFL coordinator and because it seemed like the coaching staff had given up. Watch that 2nd San Diego game, the beginning is absolutely pathetic on a team and individual level by every player on the field. Then when Cutler starts rolling, you can see the fire start to light. This season it should be an inferno.

The real reasons that are Defense has been collapsing in the second half are many. 1. Are defense was smaller and depended on speed to make plays. While this is good early, the more reps you have to do the more worn out. Whether it was little injuries, bumps and bruises, or whatever you call it, our defense spent too many plays on the field early causing them to fade.
2. Are offense had too many short drives, 3 and outs, and not enough points early last year.
3. Field position has played a large part too
4. Too much bend but don't break drives allowed by our D. These are great to allow a team to go 40, 50, 60 yards and get maybe a field goal. But this goes back to 1 and 2. our defense is on the field a lot, and then our offense gives the ball back in 4 plays. 8 to 10 series a game for the first 8 games, the damn is going to break everytime.

As for your theory that training is causing these collapses:rofl: That is just funny. The player that have done the hardest work-outs have been the ones who have that extra in the end, think Jerry Rice.

Good post, i was gonna say Rice to but then finished reading your post. That pretty much proves that working out to hard before the season starts is a load of BS, he prolly worked out harder in the offseason than any player in the history of the NFL!! All the points you make are very true. We allowed a lot of long drives but when we get the ball back and throw a int. in the first 3-4 plays the D is tired.
