It was with Irv and Jim Armstrong. No whiny Joe, thank goodness. Irv really doesn't know how to run an interview. One thing I like about Joe is he asks questions in an exciting way but leaves them open-ended.
I'll try and recap what he said as I listened to it ten minutes ago.
General questions
He mentioned that he was excited to be here with the team and begin working with his teammates this camp.
He said the workouts are rigorous but that he's excited about doing it
Said he is never wanted to not play in Denver, he just wanted a contract long term so he could settle his family in with him.
When asked about working with Champ Bailey
He said Champ needs to hire him (Bly) to be his PR guy because the league really doesn't get how amazing he really is. He blames this on Champ's "quiet, humble" nature.
Made a point of mentioning how ridiculous it is that even though everyone knows he's the best in the league, he still lead the league in takeaways. Said that people that don't understand football don't realize how remarkable that is.
Said that over the past four years, no defensive player in the league has dominated their position the way Champ has.
On being the number two corner...
He said the number is arbitrary and he still wants to push Champ.
Said that even though he's the number two, because Bailey is on the other side, he will still get a lot of work and he's excited about that.
Said that he thinks he can match up on anyone and he'll have a lot of opportunities to make plays this year. Ready to "go to work".
On his game
Says that he likes to try and take the ball away. He mentioned that people say he gambles a lot and he's ok with that because he doesn't get beat very much.
Relishes man coverage. He said that good corners want to and can play in man coverage. Says teams that keep their corners in cover 2 (cough) Chiefs (cough) are teams that don't trust their corners.
He doesn't mind zone "as a change up" but prefers man and thinks that's better tailored to his abilities.
One thing that caught my ear was that he says he really enjoys stripping the ball and it's something he's worked at for awhile. He said he's caused a lot of fumbles and incompletions by working at that skill in particular. He at present has 17 forced fumbles for his career. That's very impressive especially for a corner.
On how he came to this point in his career
Was grateful to his high school and college coaches for pushing him.
Really appreciated Dick Vermeil and helping him win a Super Bowl.
He said the player he's been most impressed with in his career was Aeneas Williams. Mentioned that Williams "never stopped learning" and was always doing things to improve his game even at the end. He said he really appreciated his example and said he showed him how to prepare yourself as a pro.
Anyway that's all I can remember but it was pretty much all Bly. He talked a lot which is good because Irv would have gotten bored and shut the thing down after two minutes like he usually does if Bly hadn't kept going. Armstrong had some good questions too. With any luck, they might have the full interview on the 950 the fan website. :)
Thanks for the interview Kahn :)

Thanks Kaylor (I always type Kahn b/c of your avy! I so stupid), I missed that today. You are right on Irv he ask questions that go on for ever and never really ask one particular thing.

Thanks for breaking it down Kaylore.
Bly will be ready because they are going to throw his way.

Thanks for the recap Khan. I liked pretty much everything Bly said and it seems like he is confident in his skills but doesn't come off as too cocky and arrogant. Well we are definitley going to see if he is up to the task cause we all know that he is going to get a lot of balls thrown his way this year playing along Champ.

I felt bad for Irv. He doesn't have any formal training in journalism and there are moments it really shows. His turn came up to ask a question and all he did was tell Bly how good he was and that it was pretty neat. Bly just kind of talked about what he wanted to.

Having witnessed the pure unblelievable talent that was Aeneas for years here in AZ...Dre is the closest to him in my book. Hard hitter, with great ball skills. Cannot wait to see it in action. Yes...he may give up a play or two, but overall he will produce well for our defense.

"Ya know Tom down there at Tire World, he was a backup utility infielder down there at Waxahatche HS in 72'. Man he could send a sunflower seed flying outta that dugout, kid. So uh go talk to Tom about some new whitewalls for that new truck from Luby's.":D
Thanks for the update K.
The thing I'm really looking forward to with Bly? The professionalism he has brought with him in the aftermath of the trade and the contract signing. He really seems like a grinder who is ready to win another championship.
I'm so f'n stoked about this year.

I'm just kinda disappointed that Bly isn't the public speaker that Pacman Jones is.

You're welcome to everyone! The offseason is basically over. This last mini camp the final blurp and the gears of war begin turning again. The players and coaches will be at Dove Valley every day from here on out.

Awesome! I have a feeling him and Champ are going to get along just fine. The continuing Reggie Wayne nightmare is over.

If you're seventy and in the final years of your contract? Probably not. The guy has forgotten more sports than any of us will ever know. He just only remembers, and talks about the really obscure references like the JV Volley Ball star of George Washington in '77.

When Bob Knight calls into the show because Irv was his favorite REF yeah I said Ref as in Referee you know he has some clout. I am pretty sure Irv knows every colorado sports player ever.

We're going to see if Bly is up to the test. Unlike other years he'll get to cover the #2 wr and unlike other years he is going to have a bullseye right on him. We'll see how he handles the pressure. I don't think D'Will handled it well last year. He started gambling a lot more trying to jump routes, leaving his WR to step in front of another one leaving his wide open (see Vincet Jackson SD game). He kept his attitude but he was making a lot of mistakes almost to the point at the end of the year Foxworth was playing better.
That being said Bly is a veteran who has been through the wars and he should be able to handle the attention as long as he plays his game and not Champ Bailey's game.

With Bly you get #1 CB ability at the #2. Also Bly has played long enough, and trusts his own abilities that he won't try to emulate him. They are only going to try to one-up one another.

Bly is going to be better than DWill just because of his experience but QB's the underestimate Bly are going to pay BIGTIME. Bly is going to be very successful because the knows that he's standing on Champ Bailey's shoulders.
I remember when posters were crying about how much Champ was getting paid. He's worth every penny of that.
Bly has a ring and Champ doesn't?
Teams are going to have to be patient playing the Broncos because our pass rush this year HAS TO be better than last year.
I am looking forward to seeing what our LB core does.

I know but he isn't some joe shmo like Lou from Littleton who was just some crazed Bronco fan who called in enough to get his own show. Irv knows sports, he just doesn't know radio.

He's a pain sometimes and the same old act gets old, but he does know sports, especially baseball. He has been pimping Spillbourgh as being better than the two old guys the Rocks dumped since spring training

Man, I thought it was going to be tough to warm up to Bly after the intial contrat squabble and considering the guy he is replacing was such a fine young kid in Darrent Williams.
But it sounds as if Bly has a great head on his shoulders and will be a valueable team mate just like DWill.

I thought he played on the same side in Detroit that he will be in Denver? So, in a sense, he was the #2 Corner there, too, no?

i worry about him getting beat over the top right now
especially since he is going to have a target on his back....i would put lynch up in the box on Bailey's side (or close to the box) and have the free safety (whoever it is going to end up being) over the top on bly's side....have the lb on Bly's side watch underneath routes and let bly gamble

By former Broncos standards we have three starting CB.
Don't forget. We now have a pass rush. I KNOW our pass rush is going to be much better than last year's because because we didn't have one.

Yeah. Scott O'Brien would be a good choice too. Our Special teams are going to be very good this year. It will surprise people.
