MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (AP) -- San Diego Chargers rookie Anthony Waters was charged with hitting a man who threw a rock at his car on a highway.

The 22-year-old linebacker was arrested last week on a simple assault and battery charge and released on $1,000 bail, Horry County spokeswoman Lisa Bourcier said Monday. No trial date has been set.

Waters, a former Clemson star, was traveling on Nichols Highway last week when a passenger in a vehicle in front of him threw a rock and broke Waters' windshield, causing about $350 in damages, according to arrest warrants.

It's unclear what happened next, but at some point Waters and another man struck Colby Sarvis, 18, and threatened to kill him, according to warrants. Bourcier said she did not know if the men had lawyers.

Brian Rogers, 23, also was charged with hitting Sarvis. He and Waters were released from jail Friday, Bourcier said. Sarvis was charged with malicious injury to personal property under $1,000.

Waters was selected in the third round of the NFL draft. He tore a knee ligament in Clemson's 54-6 opening win over Florida Atlantic in September and did not play the rest of the season.

If the kid really did throw a rock intentionally at his windshield I would imagine the charges get dropped and Waters is given a good pat on the back.

Actually not really. What the powers that be feel is that if you don't give some sort of punishment for violent outbursts of retribution then more people will do it.
We all know what you do is try and get monetary compensation and let the authorities handle the other stuff. Do we all follow this? No we don't. I once spent in night in jail for punching a dude in mouth. Did he deserve it? yes he did.
Did I deserve a night in jail? I probably did also. I got lucky because the guy ended up refusing to press charges and I didn't get sued. Why? because I had no money and wasn't important enough to bother with. But when you are a future NFL player and a rookie draft pick you have a lot more to lose and should be smarter. To me it just shows a dude with bad judgement.

I bet the charges get dropped....He will agree to not press charges against the kid for throwing the rock and the kid will agree to drop the issue of getting punched....unless he really got hurt from the punch. That would be my guess as to how this shakes out.

The guy who threw the rock should be charged with attempted murder. What if the glass shattered, blinding Anthony Waters and his car veered off the road and plunged 200 feet off a cliff?

If I have said it once, I have said it a thousand times, there is no place in this society for rock throwers. Give that clown the death penalty.

I could see the assault charge...provided the person that threw the rock gets attempted man-slaughter

Maybe he can take the Mike Shanahan Lie Detector Test and make this whole thing go away?

I don't understand the cowardly thinking of throwing a rock or dropping bricks off an overpass at someone driving a car. How many people have died as a result of this?

That being said, as difficult as it would be, you have to control yourself in a situation like this and let the police handle it, especially since you know Goodell is laying down the law. I'm curious as to how this will be handled. I'm sure it will depend on what happens with the charges.

His contract and signing bonus probably dropped a bit as well. ;)
