FOX News asks: Did Mr. Rogers destroy an entire generation?

Fox News hosts initially got a laugh out of recent allegations by a professor at Louisiana State University that tv personality Mr. Rogers produced a generation of kids who believe that "you're special just for being who you are" and therefore feel no need to work hard.

However, a follow-up segment reported more ominously that "the signs of narcissism in this society have been growing for 25 years," before quoting readers' letters blaming parents and Dr. Spock as well as Mr. Rogers.

A recent study suggested that 30% more college students display narcissistic attitudes today than when the study began in 1982. Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood, which was broadcast nationally from 1968 to 2001, was at its peak of popularity in 1985-86.

Fox then brought up the same claims yet again, asking stress expert and WNBC "lifestyle contributor" Dr. Georgia Witkin, "Do you believe his philosophy destroyed a generation?" Witkin giggled before responding that it "didn't hurt many people, but it didn't help either."

The following video is from Fox's Fox & Friends, broadcast on July 6.

:oyvey:

Typical Faux News idiocy, huh?

The problem is that the conclusion doesn't necessarily follow from the premise.

That is, if a child feels he is special for who he is, it doesn't necessarily follow that he will feel no need to work hard for what he wants.

I think this guy is confusing self-esteem with entitlement.

Mr. Rodgers that's funny. There is no doubt we have become a welfare society and more people expect something for nothing. Only thing I expect from our government is for them to blow the money I send in for taxes. Hopefully some of that money goes to preventing mini nukes from blowing up my area of the world and a few bucks allocated to keeping Eisenhower tunnel open during the winter so I can make it to a Broncos game.

I dont agree with that bro ... unemployment rate is below 5% , thats alot of people working ....... I think shows like Animal house would do more damage , showing it is cool to screw off in college

Exactly.

During Bush's tenure, good-paying jobs with good benefits have been replaced with jobs that pay less and offer fewer (if any) benefits.

(Cue W*GS with one of his usual "I don't give a sh*t - it doesn't have any impact on me" or "those people don't have to take those jobs" responses.)

yeah I wont argue that , but what I will argue is the idea that we want to become a nation of Welfare , my entire point is people would rather work then take a free ride .... But I do agree about wages though

Yeah, you're right - I forgot republican rule #1:

Everything bad that happens on Bush's watch is Clinton's fault.
