Ex-Watergate prober: Thompson 'was mole for the White House'

According to an article in Wednesday's Boston Globe, GOP presidential hopeful Fred Thompson, one-time Republican Senator for Tennessee, leaked information to the Nixon white house during the height of the Watergate investigation. In his capacity as the Senate Watergate Committee minority counsel, Thompson tipped off Nixon's attorney that the committee was aware of the president's secret tapping device, and would be making the information public.
In his Watergate memoir, "At That Point in Time," Thompson recalls that he acted with "no authority" in disclosing this information to Nixon. Former investigator for the Democratic majority on the Watergate committee, Scott Armstrong, claims this was just one of many leaks Thompson provided to the Nixon administration.
"Thompson was a mole for the White House," Armstrong claims. "Fred was working hammer and tong to defeat the investigation of finding out what happened to authorize Watergate and find out what the role of the president was." When asked to comment on today's article, Thompson responded, "I'm glad all of this has finally caused someone to read my Watergate book, even though it's taken them over thirty years."
Earlier this year, Watergate icon Bob Woodward stated that Fred Thompson's role in the Watergate investigation was exaggerated and that when Thompson famously asked about the existence of a secret White House taping system, he already "knew the answer."
The role of Thompson as a "mole" for the Nixon White House undermines the cultivated image of a straight shooting and independent minded prosecutor who played a role in bringing down the president. Thompson's website even proclaims that he "gained national attention for leading the line of inquiry that revealed the audio-taping system in the White House Oval Office."

I am sorry...but I don't even feel like Fred is a legit candidate at this point, and all the other choices suck. Every last one of them.

I'm sure there's a GOOD REASON why Thompson would leak info to the Nixon White House :oyvey:
I am so sick of right-wingers justifying everything they do in the name either a) God, or b) Country. And Thompson is as bad as Giuliani in that respect ... with McCain at least he was a real hero, and as such, he was never over the top with blind cloaks of allegiance. I'm gonna miss McCain ...
And I'm not one for big sigs, but this giant stars and stripes motif I have (below) thrills me every time I click "Post." The stars and stripes are for everybody. I think that's why Hillary is tacking so far to the right ...

The only one in whom I have even a remote positive interest is Ron Paul. If he doesn't get far, I'll be taking a long look at the Green and Libertarian candidates next year.

I think I am going to end up doing the samething. My vote basically doesn't count anyway in the grand scheme.

I just heard that Thompson now sits on a Repukelian committee, the purpose of which is to raise money for Scooter Libby -- to pay off his court-imposed fine.
Thompson can go back to Tennessee or Kentucky or Hollywood or wherever he came from.

Libby conveniently came up with a check for $250,000 today.
And now there is a question about how Libby can serve
probation if he never served any jail time. So Libby has
in effect gotten a de facto pardon already.
Except now he can't be compelled to testify before congress
like he would have been if he had been granted a pardon.

Yep.
He voted "guilty" on the obstruction of justice article when the Senate voted on the impeachment of Bill Clinton.
And now he's raising money for a man who was convicted for obstructing justice in an investigation into a high crime committed by a member of the Bush administration.
Gotta love that right-wing double standard.

Bill Clinton lied at a deposition in a civil suit (Paula Jones).
Irving Libby lied to law enforcement - the FBI, investigating a crime. Then he walked into a federal courtroom, raised his hand and put his other hand on the Bible ... and:
COURT: "Do you swear to truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth, so help you God?"
LIBBY: "I do."
He then proceeded to lie through his teeth.
Just a teeny-weeny bit of difference between those lies.
