Hey guys,
my computer just went bye bye. My hard drive literally went up in smoke. Anyway, I have to rebuild my music library. For the Ipod owners- do any of you use a paid but unlimited music service. Thanks in advance and I really appreciate any info.

What do you mean it went up in smoke? Did the OS corrupt itself or was it a complete failure?

My computer wouldn't start and I figured it was the motherboard. I got a device that lets you tranfear files from a harddrive using a USb 2 connection. Anyway, the power source seemed to fry a chip in the hard drive. Smoke started rising up and I got sad.

cool. Most times when the OS flubs you can still get your data of the HDD.

Yeah, I could send the HD in, but they say to recover the data off would be about 1 thousand. Not quite worth it right now.

Hd only last about 2-3 years depending on the speed. But my slave drive has been going forever, my master is about four years old, a crash is just around the corner.

Anyway, any suggestions on the music?

I have a nine year old laptop that works just fine. Granted it has minimal use, but it still amazes me

Popps could probbaly tell you. I don't download or pay for music that isn't free. I only mess with .wav, .shn, and flac. There are lossless formats.

Dont know if you care or anyone else does, but this program is a very good one for recovering lost data from hard drives.
Maybe use it sometimes.

what is a slave drive
In a PC, if you have more than one internal HDD...one has to be a master and one a slave...unless you use the CS setting.

I just use the secondray IDE channel, import the disk, and copy it to the system disk

Well you have your master hard drive, thats where your OS is and other files.
Slave is another hard drive hooked up to the IDE, you can save files to it.
I use to keep important files in case my master crashes, but partitioning the master works well also.

There are very few "all you can eat" music sites out there. The concept sort of fell by the wayside.
I believe Yahoo Music offers that kind of program, though your content is limited... and there's file type restrictions, etc. There are sites like eMusic, but again... less content and some require you use their weird music players, etc.
Right now, iTunes offers the most legitimate, pay content, to my knowledge. It's MP3/M4P (semi-protected) .... but easy to work with.
As for your iTunes, remember that it's very difficult to go from iPod BACK to computer. (It CAN be done with third party software.) So, try to be sure to have everything that lives on your iPod living on at least one other hard drive. (Back up your library.)
Good luck to you, and props to you for attempting to acquire your music in a legitimate manner.

Go to this (http://www.engadget.com/2004/11/02/how-to-get-music-off-your-ipod/) site.
Scroll down to the link to "ephpod." Follow the link and download.
Then follow the steps on the first link.
Worked like a charm for me. I got ALL of my music on my ipod back onto my computer.

I use bit torrent and etree.org's torrent page...these are typically live concerts....Dead, Garcia, Phish, TAB, String Cheese, Ratdog, Pink Floyd(typically sound like crap), MMW, Flecktones, and so on.

I love Yahoo Music Unlimited. I even went in and got the To Go service, which lets you download all the music you want onto an mp3 player. It's $140 a year, but I am at my computer 10-12 hours/day, and I am always listening to music. It was a worthwhile investment.
Unfortunately, I didn't read the fine print when I signed up. You can't transfer files to an iPod. It says it on the sign-up page, but it's down at the bottom. I'm a little miffed about it, but I should have seen it. The service is still well worth it, IMO, but I'd like to be able to use it on my iPod.
If you don't do the To Go thing, the annual fee is $70, or thereabouts. It allows you to download all the music you want - you just can't burn it on CDs, transfer it to non-approved devices, etc. If there is a song you want to purchase (for unlimited, unrestricted use), you can purchase it for $.79.
