There are three clips from the 1997 season.

Broncos' defensive line futility continues

Has the NFL passed new rules into effect that forbid the Denver Broncos from upgrading their defensive line?

In what has become something of an annual offseason quest for Mike Shanahan, Denver entered this year's free agency market once again needing new bodies at defensive tackle and end. But so far, regardless of what they have tried, they've been denied at every turn -- almost comically, at times.

Denver's first move was to trade a sixth-round draft choice to the Miami Dolphins for veteran defensive tackle Dan Wilkinson. Despite his age, Wilkinson is a known commodity as a run stopper, and he would have been a solid addition to Denver's defensive tackle rotation.

This was clearly a move orchestrated by new defensive coordinator Jim Bates, who prefers space-eating defensive tackles. At 340 pounds, Wilkinson fit the bill.

So what happened? Denver's new space-eater ended up spacing out.

After Denver and Miami agreed to a trade on March 3, Wilkinson was required to report to the Broncos by March 15 for a physical. He didn't. The deadline was extended.

The Broncos couldn't reach him. The Dolphins couldn't reach him. The deal is now off.

Big Daddy's replacement? A former Cleveland Brown.

The Broncos signed Alvin McKinley during the Wilkinson drama, presumably as insurance. Now McKinley will likely end up starting. What's so amusing about this?

This makes six former Browns the Broncos have imported. None have really had much of an impact, as the Broncos have remained near the bottom of the league in sacks during their tenure as "Browncos."

Perhaps there is hope for McKinley, who was largely signed on his own merits. Denver's former defensive line coach, Andre Patterson, dragged the initial surge of Cleveland castoffs with him when he made the switch from Cleveland to Denver in 2005.

There was, of course, prize free agent Patrick Kerney, and Denver had its sights set on him for awhile. He ended up signing a contract with the Seattle Seahawks that paid out $19.5 million in bonuses.

The Broncos passed, the deal apparently too rich for their blood. Seemingly, they gave the money in their "Kerney Kitty" to a backup tight end. Former Patriot Daniel Graham was given $15 million in bonuses after signing with the Broncos.

Was Kerney really not worth a little extra for a team starving for defensive linemen? Why not dump a few of those Browncos and give their money to a guy who deserves it?

But the Broncos weren't done trying to improve their pass rush. Determined to upgrade at defensive end, last week the Broncos were all set to ship former All-Pro middle linebacker Al Wilson to the New York Giants for Justin Tuck.

And what happened? Wilson failed his physical in New York.

That's right. The Broncos couldn't trade a perennial Pro Bowler for a backup defensive end who has one career start and one career sack.

The unfortunate circumstances that have befallen Denver in the Tuck deal are even more ridiculous when you consider that Wilson will now likely end up starting for the Broncos in 2007. He'll probably pass their physical just fine.

It's not like this sort of thing hasn't happened before. Kansas City linebacker Kendrell Bell failed a physical with the Giants as a free agent in 2005, only to be signed by the Chiefs after passing theirs. It seems that one man's trash is truly another's treasure.

And in that sense, the Broncos will now simply have to turn to the draft to find some help along the defensive line. As is always the case in the NFL, the best teams build through the draft, and there's no better place to find premier talent among defensive linemen.

Where did the Carolina Panthers find Julius Peppers, Mike Rucker and Kris Jenkins? The draft. Where did the San Diego Chargers find Luis Castillo, Jamal Williams and Igor Olshansky? The draft.

In the last five years the Broncos have spent a total of one first-day pick on defensive linemen. They have drafted players like Terry Pierce and Tatum Bell instead of Osi Umenyiora and Tank Johnson.

But draft troubles notwithstanding, can someone give Shanahan and his front office a break? What does it take to get some decent defensive linemen on your team?!

Comments Nice evaluation and irony. Just one item: The Broncos did manage to upgrade their line with the Browncos. Ekuban and Lang have done good jobs, if not spectacular. Warren would have done a great job, if not for his injuries, which should be healed this next year. Myers sent what else they had at defensive tackle down the road, although he is no more than a good backup. But, as you implied, the team badly needs a good STARTING lineman or two.

Comments Noone knows why the Wilson to Giants deal was cancelled, you're saying it's proven fact that he failed his physical. Noone knows what the Compensation was going to be in that deal, you are saying that it was for Tuck based on a speculative article. He even went so far to refer to it as "The Tuck Deal" at one point, as if it was going to be Tuck for Wilson straight up. He never mentions the rumoured(Again, from that speculative) draft pick that was supposed to come with him. Calling Daniel Graham a Backup tight end isn't lying, but it's dishonest. The fact that he was a backup in NE this past season(he started the previous ones) was more indicative of the Pats depth there and how good Watson was. It's like calling Reggie Bush a backup Running Back. It's true, but it's not honest. I'll say this; the way we've approached fixing our defensive line has been rather shameful, and if you want to write a half-assed slanted article about it, I see no reason why you should have to lie and spin to do so.

Comments decent article. u missed one key point, tho. the Broncos have drafted good defensive lineman. they just dont keep them. A D-Line of Trevor Pryce, Bertrand Berry, Reggie Hayward and Monsanto Pope / Montae Reagor would rank amongst the top 5-10 in the league. In today's world of frivolous PI flags, Shanny instead decides to invest in CBs . . .

That was me, just so you know.

I like how you used clips from the Wildcard matchup between the Chiefs and the Colts. That was a mighty show of the Chiefs' defensive prowess. I also like how you used a lot of sacks as highlights. The Chiefs wound up 22nd in the league there. Mighty impressive if I do say so myself. I mean, the mighty Browncos only wound up with 3 more sacks, so they must be lighting that damn QB up something fierce. Oh, and I REALLY love how you put the Bernard Pollard hit from the Broncos-Chiefs Thursday night matchup. I mean, the guy caught the ball inside the 5 anyways, but WHAT A HIT!

You don't have the threat of a deep ball now. You have Kennison at 1 and a rook at 2 with a suspect offensive line and a QB making his first appearance in the NFL with a lot of question marks.

Brodie Croyle has the strongest arm the Chiefs have seen in a quarterback in quite some time. Kennison has been among the league leaders in 40+ yard receptions over the last few years. Samie Parker, Chris Hannon and Jeff Webb don't lack speed either, and in fact Hannon was running in the 4.29 range this offseason after dropping weight. It's very possible that Croyle's arm opens up the offense downfield in a way that Trent Green and Damon Huard never could.

But not in yards per catch. He didn't appear to lose any speed from what I saw last season. I'm guessing he's one of those rare guys like Darrell Green that maintain most of their speed late into their careers. His numbers dropped off because we didn't throw the ball as much.

Just a couple of big, athletic, fast receivers we drafted. Think of them as our own Brandon Marshalls.

Aside from being a Chiefs player, I don't see the success in Croyle. Watched many of his games in college, and cannot see the greatness in him or a QB who's special in him. I'd be f'n shocked if he last more than 4 or 5 years. I thought he wasn't special in college, and I do not forsee anything accomplished in the NFL. I would not have drafted him.

Hey BOOB you little twit. Too damn bad your offense left through the same door you think your D arrived through ?

Will King Carl ever get it together ? When your newly arrived upgraded D has left via free agancy and old age you'll get a new improved O.

Chiefs defense improved from poor to average and got better exactly where in the offseason? Never mind the fact that the only true pass rusher on the roster is suspended for the first four games of the season, and who is going to increase the pressure on the QB? Chiefs DL will be competing for the cellar in pass rush this year, LB core is getting another rehaul, the CB's are another year older, and they want to start inexperienced average safeties. Talk about another team with major transition, crap on the DL outside Hali, a guy one more arrest from a one year suspension who is planning on Leaving KC as soon as possible, and a very questionable secondary and you have the chiefs defense in a nutshell.

The Chiefs played a good defensive game against the best offense in the NFL. There are a lot of things to criticize when it comes to the Chiefs that game. The defense isn't one of them.

defensive game? I guess if you call handing off to LJ to the tune of 30+ carries playing defense.

Looking forward to some more of Croyle's greatest hits.

Croyle's comments at the beginning of that video are priceless. "We can go 1-10, but if we can beat Auburn everybody's happy"

Hmm.... doesn't that sound a little too familiar to the cheaps?

Brodie should fit right in Hilarious!

Fortunately Brodie doesn't have a very poor OL anymore. I think KC will be ok at OL for now. Waters is a pro bowler, I-65 is gone, and we have Welbourne playing his true position. Losing Shields will hurt a bit though.

This is what Brodie can do if he has a little protection.

There are a lot of good folks on here. I think the rivalry stuff seeps a little bit too much into perceptions that people have. We are all just a lot of normal folks who enjoy football at the end of the day.

Speaking of which I am putting together a new project some of you may enjoy. I got a little Sony GPS device that tracks and logs the exact location I am at every 15 secs or so. I will have it clipped to my bag when I go out and take photographs. Then I upload my pictures and upload the log so they sync. Each photo will have the location it was taken at embedded in the file. From there I am going to upload those pictures into a customized google maps interface.

You will be able to browse pictures of mine with google maps based on where they were taken. I think it could appeal to Kansas Citians.

Zach isn't all that bad. He doesn't realize what a mistake he's making being a Chiefs fan, but I suppose in some instances that can't be held against a person. We don't really know what it's like to grow up in a trailer park with red and yellow in your face everyday.
