What Pacman Needs (http://chiefs.scout.com/2/653621.html)

You were probably outraged in some manner when you heard about either of the latest news items concerning Tennessee Titans cornerback/gangster Pacman Jones.

If you’re Pacman himself, one of his buddies or his lawyer, you’re probably incensed that the Las Vegas Police and Clark County District Attorney's office have charged Jones with two counts of felony coercion.

If you’re NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, Titans head coach Jeff Fisher or anyone who pays attention to NFL news, you’re probably disgusted with Pacman’s latest questionable foray into the strip club underworld: an exchange of post-lap dance stoplight gunfire between one car and another transporting Pacman’s entourage.

Whether or not Jones was driving or riding in that car is irrelevant (police claim he wasn’t). If he becomes a convicted felon, it’s also irrelevant.

Pacman Jones continues to associate with the seedy elements of society. His potential degree of guilt in February’s Las Vegas strip-club fracas has been given validation by the charges brought against him. He continues to disgrace the NFL, the Tennessee Titans and everything Goodell is trying to accomplish.

My initial reaction to all of this was to support a lifetime suspension from the NFL for Jones. But that’s over the top. It’s absurd, no matter how fed up you are with Jones’ seemingly endless string of the off-the-field incidents.

Should his suspension be extended another year? No. What will 730 days away from the game teach Pacman that 365 won’t? Likely it will just mean the end of his career.

That sort of suspension might fly if we were dealing with an older NFL player. If Michael Vick’s dog-eat-dog drama plays out the way I think it will, by all means, suspend him for a year or two. He’ll get the point, and likely already has.

Here’s the difference. Vick is an adult. He should be held responsible for his actions to the fullest extent of Goodell’s power.

Pacman is a 23-year old kid who, sadly, may not know any better. If he does, he doesn’t care.

He needs a daddy. More specifically, an African-American one.

I hate to bring race into this, but I think it’s the overriding issue here. When Jones was five years old, his father was shot and killed. He was raised by his mother and late grandmother.

Where is the father figure in his life? It’s not Goodell or Fisher. Pacman obviously doesn’t respect either of those men. He’s ignored their requests and attempts at discipline.

He needs an African-American role model to help him clean up his act. Someone he will listen to. Someone who commands respect and attention. Someone who he knows is on his side.

It’s time for President Gene Upshaw and the NFL Player’s Association to step in. It’s time for the members of the NFLPA’s Player Advisory Council - Donovin Darius, Tony Richardson Takeo Spikes, James Thrash and Troy Vincent - to take this young man under their wing. And I’m guessing Jeff Saturday, regardless of his skin color, can help, too.

Upshaw needs to sit down with Pacman and show him the way. Explain that if he continues down the self-destructive path he’s already on, he won’t be eligible for all the rights and privileges membership in the NFL’s exclusive players-only club grants. They won’t tolerate or support his actions any longer.

Upshaw should tell Pacman he can either enjoy a long, productive NFL career as one of the league’s top cornerbacks, never having to work again after retirement, or he can throw that life of fame and fortune away. What will he be left with? Life as one of America’s most high-profile thugs, with an almost-completed degree from West Virginia University.

Upshaw needs to give Pacman the choice. Play ball or go home – to prison, or the grave.

Upshaw, and no one else, needs to tell Pacman these things. Because he might be the only one Pacman will listen to.

I realize all of this sounds odd coming from a white man who hates rap music and has never set foot inside a strip club. But I think it’s the truth. Furthermore, I didn't flunk out of junior high twice and my entourage would never pull out their guns at a stoplight. I owe all of this to the fact my father grew up surviving the mean streets of Monett, Missouri.

Larry Johnson needed a black head coach, someone he could relate to. Jones needs a black father figure – someone to show him the way.

Otherwise, it’s game over for Pacman.

Not having good role models makes things a lot tougher. I do think though that certain people refuse to look up to role models. Adam Jones is one of those people. Role models can be found everywhere even if you don't have a dad. I can say without knowing for sure but feeling pretty good about being right that Pacman has had some good role models come in and out of his life. I'm guessing he has chosen not to look up to them. This guy is an ingrate with no redeeming qualities other then his athletic ability. I feel he is a thug that is past the point of no return at this point. Adam Jones becomes more and more defiant with every charge and every incident. Also it's obvious he has a disdain for authority and shows people in authority no respect. We all know what kind of trouble that gets you into. If you hang out with thugs and gangmembers and you have already became a man then you probably aren't worth trying to get through to. Kids yes because they can still be molded. But a guy like Pacman is a lost cause. Throw him in prison and forget about him.

I didn't have a father so i used my grandfather for support. He was the closest thing i had to one. By the time i can into his life he was just about ready to retire. I think i came out ok in my opinion.

Well, I for one can see many reasons LJ couldn't relate to Joe Pa (and vermeil too, btw. He coached the chorfs, but as coaches go, he's a rightous guy)

No way a kid goes through HS and then college and into the NFL w/o finding role models. IF he's a gangbanger who survives in the free world until 22, then maybe he's never seen role models. He's just a spoiled thug.

Pacman needs to hangout with Bob. No way he gets in trouble playing with Star Wars toys, or Dungeons and Dragons. Pacman woudn't have to worry about drinking either. Bob's mom will have the juice boxes ready. They'll be in bed by 9 pm, so he won't have to worry about being out late with strippers.

He actually had one at WVU in his strength and conditioning coach...but that's not going to fly now. Apparently he won't even listen to his uncle. His family is pretty worried about him.

PacMan could be done in the NFL.
If ever they want to send a message to the rest of the league....and potential thugs entering the NFL.......PacMan is the ideal candidate.
He may never play another down.

Suspended Titans CB expected to surrender in Las Vegas

By S.A. REID

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

06/21/07

It looks as if DeKalb County police will have to take a number in questioning suspended NFL star Adam "Pacman" Jones about a recent early morning shooting on Atlanta's southside that left a man injured.

Authorities say they are working out the details with Manny Arora, his lawyer, on when Jones will come in and share what he knows about those accused of firing at a former police officer and his nephew on Moreland Avenue at I-285. Arora has said the College Park native plans to cooperate with police.

Jones, a Tennessee Titan cornerback now facing felony charges in Las Vegas in connection with a strip club fracus during NBA All-Star Weekend, isn't a suspect in the case. But DeKalb police believe members of his entourage who were reportedly with him at the nearby Club Blaze strip club may have been involved.

No charges have been filed in the investigation.

"What we've heard [from his lawyer] is that he is in Tennessee on the practice field, so we're trying to coordinate when he would come back to Atlanta," said Keisha Williams, a DeKalb police spokeswoman.

Darian Haygood, one of the shooting victims, alleges in a police report that he and members of Jones' entourage exchanged gunfire after men riding in two separate cars pulled along side his vehicle at a stop light on northbound Moreland Avenue, not far from Club Blaze, and began shooting. Haygood claims they fired first.

Haygood, 34, told police the shooting came shortly after he and Jones argued at the strip club. Jones, Haygood said, got angry after he asked a woman there for a dance.

Police said later they weren't sure whether the woman was a dancer at the club or a member of Jones' entourage.

During the exchange, Jones allegedly said, "Y'all don't know me. I'll kill all y'all in here." Haygood, who said he went to the club to pick up his nephew, said they noticed members following them as they tried to leave. Haygood reported his concern to an off-duty Clayton County deputy working as a security guard at the club.

The deputy asked Jones and his entourage to leave after hearing the Westlake High graduate threatened to retrieve a gun from his car, according to a police report.

Jones, 23, pulled off in a black Cadillac Escalade; an entourage member mentioned in the report as "Slugga" left in a black Pontiac Grand Prix; and another unidentified man road off in green Dodge Charger.

Haygood, who left with his nephew shortly afterward, alleges the shots were fired from the Grand Prix and Dodge Charger. His nephew suffered minor injuries from plastic shrapnel.

Police say the Escalade wasn't seen at the location of the shooting.

This is the second shooting investigation Jones' name has been connected with this year.

Las Vegas authorities have issued arrest warrants for Jones and two other suspects related to a strip club melee that preceded a triple shooting outside the club in February, according to The Associated Press. A bar employee was left paralyzed and two others with minor injuries.

In a felony coercion complaint, authorities accuse Jones of threatening to kill club employees and of bitting a bar bouncer on the ankle during a melee inside the club that erupted after he allegedly showered the dancers on stage with thousands of dollars, the Associated Press reported.

A Las Vegas lawyer representing Jones, the Franklin, Tenn.-resident, and the two other suspects are reported working out an arrangement for their surrender, The Associated Press said.
