CSU gets in the hunt for Elway
By Jim Armstrong
Denver Post Staff Columnist

Note early and note often ...

CSU's coaching staff believes in three things - blocking, tackling and, from the looks of things, good genes. First, the Rams signed Klint Kubiak, Gary's oldest son, to play free safety. That move worked out, what with Klint Kubiak listed on some preseason all-conference teams. Then the Rams successfully recruited middle brother Klay Kubiak. And now comes word that CSU has offered a scholarship to Jack Elway, joining Oregon and LSU on the list of those officially in pursuit of the chip-off-the-old-Hall of Famer.

That downward spiral CSU has endured in recent years? Don't count on it continuing, not with a veteran quarterback, Caleb Hanie, around and - count 'em - nine returning starters on defense, including the entire D-line. ...

So much for CU having a commitment out of Texas. Rivals.com recently reported that wideout Chance Blackmon, Rivals' 81st-ranked player in the state, was having second thoughts about his oral commitment to the Buffs. Now Blackmon tells the website that he has "fully decommitted" from Colorado. "Basically, I talked to my dad about it and he didn't like the fact that Colorado is so far away from home," he said. ...
George Steinbrenner is getting enough bang for his buck. What he needs is more outs. The Yankees' team ERA was 4.40, 16th in the major leagues as of Tuesday afternoon. The Rockies, whose rotation ($12,181,000) makes less than part-timer Roger Clemens, were 19th at 4.47. ...

Swings and misses will be about as rare as two-buck beers in LoDo this week. To wit: Rox pitchers, next-to- last in the bigs with 375 strikeouts, ahead of only the Yankees at 363. ...

Money can't buy you love, just power: A-Rod, 27 homers going into Coors Field. Rox club leaders Matt Holliday and Brad Hawpe, on pace to finish the season with 28. ...

Not that the Yankees are a stable franchise, but their starting rotation for the Rockies series - Mike Mussina, Andy Pettitte and Clemens, in order - is the same as it was in 2002 for their previous visit to Our Town. ...

For the record, I got a nice e-mail from Rox owner Charlie Monfort the other day. Unfortunately, it was to say thanks, but no to an interview request. ...

Derrek Lee received a five-game suspension after taking a swing at Padres pitcher Chris Young. Imagine that, the Cubs fighting the other team for a change. ...

Twins center fielder Torii Hunter, when asked by reporters about the bruise on his hand after being plunked Sunday by Jeff Suppan: "It was scary. It seemed like it was growing as I was looking at it. It was like a 'Tom and Jerry' cartoon." ...

Is Tiger Woods losing his mystique in the majors? Please. The Las Vegas Hilton has established the Tiger Man as a 5-2 favorite to win the British Open. The next-shortest odds belong to Phil Mickelson (15-1), Ernie Els (18-1), Jim Furyk (20-1), and Retief Goosen and Padraig Harrington (25-1). ...
Square peg, meet round hole: 30 NBA teams, 46 underclassmen who've declared for the draft in hopes of getting guaranteed first-round money. ...

Wondering whether CSU 7-footer Jason Smith made the right decision by staying in the draft? Don't. Truth is, sticking around for your senior season usually hurts your draft stock. From 2000-05, when high-schoolers were eligible, 13 high school seniors were lottery picks, compared with 11 college seniors. ...
NBAdraft.net has Smith going No. 15 to Detroit, a far cry from two or three months ago, when he teetered between the end of the first round and the beginning of the second. ...
And finally, memo to Pacman Jones: It's not too late to get it together, dude. Today is the first day of the rest of your table dance.

Haha, good point.

Although I didn't need any additional incentive to continue getting rowdy and hammered at Rams games, this is interesting.

I can't see anyway that Jack Elway stays in state. Kid needs to get the heck out of CO for college.

What position does Jack Elway play? Is he a QB like his dad?

I remember knowing at 1 point what position he played but after time i forgot, so can someone drop some knowledge on me.

Just think of all the girls that will be his age and grew up worshipping his Dad. Sounds like easy pickings.

It'll be easy pickins where ever he goes. Problem with Jack is he's never going to be as good as his old man, and being in CO everyone is going to expect him to live up to his dad's talent. The kid is a decent D1 prospect, and at this point his offers are based more on his name than actual talent. He has the raw talent to be pretty good, but he's not polished at this point. No matter where he goes, it will still be a circus, but not as bad as if he were to go to CSU.

Still of the belief that if the LSU and Oregon offers are legit, and I don't think they are, it's only based on his last name up to this point.

If the Rams do manage to bag Jack ... and Gary gets a Bye week and flies up to watch Klint play ... wouldn't you just love to be a fly on the wall when Gary and John sit down next to each other to watch the game?

I'd be all ears.

He started for the largest school in the State. One with a long tradition of winning. He will probably be the 3rd or so best QB in colorado this year.

Poppa needs to send him up to Harvard or the like where he can get a great education while playing football and no one will pay much attention to him.

And still got his butt whipped by a small school in Mullen. Just what they'll do to Creek next year.

Sonny is the best.

If I was a big high school athlete, with a choice of any school (not counting CU), I think I'd go to Oregon or UCLA.

Thats not really the issue. If you are an NFL calibur player it wont matter if you go to CSU or LSU. That being said, based on the programs alone, its hard to see CSU stacking up against LSU and Oregon in recruiting, thats the real issue at hand.

Man, this kids toubles have only just begun. I mean how many people were scrutinizing John's play in his junior year of HIGH SCHOOL? Jeez let the guy at least play some college ball and maybe get some quality coaching before deciding if he's any good.

From the scouting reports I've seen he could potentially be an NFL level talent, but needs a truck load of fundamentals work. Not what you'd expect from the son of a HOF QB.

I could see higher level D1 schools being interested because he does have the potential, but he does need to go out of state. Neither CU or CSU are good enough to not artificially boost him up the depth chart due to his last name and that'd be just about the worst thing for him. A red shirt year followed by a year or two as a backup is what'd be best for him.

Well they got a damn good kicker today. His old man played for them in the 80's. Local kid that I've read a lot about. http://www.rockymountainnews.com/news/2008/feb/06/ex-kicker-brought-his-son-uprights/
