I've had dolphins pop up right next to me while I've been in the water. Most of the time it was at Black's Beach,Del Mar and down in Mex. Once you know they are there, it's not so scary but the first time they pop or or you see that dorsal fin out of the corner of your eye, it's freaking unnerving. Gawd I miss surfing:vermeil:

Seals are goof balls and typically very friendly....however, I get more nervous when it's seals around me rather than dolphins. Sharks eat seals, not dolphins.

I truly would have guessed it was a fake. But here (http://www.surfshooter.com/DolphinInfo.html) is the site of the guy that took the picture, including another picture, a few frames later. In that one, you can see more clearly that it's a dolphin.

Now that I know it's not a fake, I have to say - that's pretty darn cool.

Once you got past the smell. At first, I just thought she practiced poor hygiene. Then, I was like, "DUH! She lives in the freakin' ocean!" :hitself:

When I tell people that, no one can believe I didn't make the connection earlier.

Where would you surf in HI?

Pipeline, sunset, Waimea, Waikiki, sandy. Western oahu has some good spots also. Got to watch out for the locals though, they truly believe they own the water sometimes and will square off on "howle" boys who venture out occassionally. Especially up on the north shore and western shores....dman

Never said I did. I just answered the question. However, they are all good surfing spots around oahu. I wouldn't venture out at waimea in winter / spring though. Killer waves, 15- 20+ on a reasonably consistent basis. Up on the northshore at the eddie quicksilver surf tournament one year, 25 +, freaking huge waves. they shut it down for a time, the sets were rolling in at 30 + , just way to dangerous out there sometimes..dman

Thats what i meant, i wouldn't even think about it on a huge day. The reef is what im worried about, getting pinched at the wrong spot.

I was just throwing that out there. But you're right, if you see dolphins near by you're safe pretty much. But sharks don't really come in to close here, but there was a decent size shark last year off of San Clemente. He/she was just cruising i suppose.

I saw a few smaller-ish shark (3-4 feet) surfing in Kauai a few years ago, just cruising along. It was a tipped reef shark, although now I can't remember if it was a black or white tipped one, which ever is more docile. That was kind of cool. They have been having more and more shark sightings off of La Jolla cove in the last few years, but I nor none of my buds have seen any. (I've not surfed there for a couple of years.

Dam, have to be careful. The bull shark is the most dangerous shark there is. They swim a thousand miles up the Mississippi river. Pretty aggressive fish, people swimming up there come in contact with them. Kind of scary when you think about it.

I have family that live over on Catalina island. My uncle owns a few boats, about six years ago he took me and some others out on the backside of the island. He wants to show us some sharks. We started chumming for them, next thing ya know we have a 13 footer . Beautiful fish, awesome to really see up close in the wild like that.

Its breeding grounds out there for great whites, very deep channels and a lot of sea lions.

Great Whites have proven not to be the shark to fear most, as their attacks on humans are very rare. However..............it's pretty hard not to fear this the most..........

http://www.wetasschronicles.com/GreatWhiteBreach1.jpg

I'm a shark junky and always record shows on them. What I find very facinating are these two sharks. The Mako shark seems to have this ability to warm it's blood and thus allowing it to swim even faster, and thus this shark can haul butt through the water, and it also allows it to move further north and hunt in colder waters. The Bull shark can somehow swim in both salt and fresh water, which is totally amazing.
