I'm kind of looking for a new car, and car that I've been looking at is the Scion tC.

Scion is a toyota brand so the quality should be good; it has pretty good performance, good gas mileage, and is very well priced.

Does anybody have one or know somebody who does?

Public perception at its finest, nevermind the fact that toyota recalled all their new v8 tundras. Hilarious!

Id look at the Pontiac G5 or the Cobalt SS Supercharged is actually VERY good bang for the buck w/ great hp.

You're also talking about a completely new truck that was just redesigned top to bottom. Every manufacturer has issues with first year models.

The tc is a proven design that has been around for awhile. It is sporty and reliable, but the gas mileage is actually a bit of a disappointment, due to the relatively heavy weight of the car compared to some of its competition.

And how many recalls has GM, Ford, etc had compared to them? To even imply that those three have the same quality as Toyota is laughingly pathetic. Every domestic car I or my family have owned has been a POS, while every toyota we have owned has been an excellent vehicle. You reap what you sow.

The Cobalt gets lower gas mileage, costs more, and has worse reliability.

The Pontiac G5 is new so who knows what the reliability will be, whereas the scion tC is a proven design with a good reliability record.

competition being what? From what I've seen it gets mid 20's in town and low-mid 30's on the highway.

I have an '00 Toyota with 128K miles - I've changed the oil, tires, brakes upkeep and the timing belt. That's been it.

Couldn't be happier.

Please don't drag this thread into a domestic versus foreign car debate. I'm just asking for people's experience with Toyota, and in particular this car.

My ex coworker has a Scion, and so does my best friend's stepfather. They both like them. They are roomy inside and from what I've heard, have decent gas milage. If you can get past the ugliness of the car.. it's not a bad car. I personally think they are hideous looking. They look like toasters!

And how much?

Want to know how much I'd have to spend to get that out of my Mustang GT? And I'd look better while doing it and still have rear wheel drive. :approve:

I'll see that and raise you this.

http://www.mustangworld.com/ourpics/News/select43/brandonz2.jpg

For several thousand less, you could have bought a brand new 2003-2004 SVT Cobra, a car which puts about 390hp to the wheels. That's in bone stock form and plenty capable of handling over 700rwhp on the stock componets. Oh and for the few thousand in price difference, you could slap bolt ons to the car that would raise horsepower to around 500 at the wheels.

COnsumer reports has the Scion tC as "recommended". Owner satisfaction, fuel economy, accident avoidance, front seat comfort, and acceleration were all rated "Very Good". The only things listed negatively was trunk, rear seat comfort, and bod integrity. All of the electrical systems and engine / transmission were rated "Excellent" for reliability.

Hope this helps.

You have a much different opinion of performance than I do then.

For a production car that goes from 0-60 in 7.2 seconds is pretty good IMO. Especially for only 17k with solid features, good gas mileage, and solid reliability.

A family member has a Scion like the one pictures. First one was about a year old and a couple of weeks ago it was totaled in an accident. She walked away with a couple of scrapes from the airbags. After looking at everything else in the same price range she bought another Scion. For what it's worth.

Glad she is okay. I know another guy where the same thing happened (totaled his and bought another). I saw pictures of it and can't believe he didn't have anything more then some scrapes. That's what first got me interested in this car.

I have never owned a Toyota... not that I wouldn't. I view Toyota just like I do Honda, Nissan, Acura, Lexus, or Infiniti. I'd buy any of them. I've had a Honda Predlude or Accord my whole life. My Accord currently has 140k miles on it and is doing well. My wife has an Acura and it is great as well. Eventually, when my Accord bites the dust I plan on going with either a Tacoma or a Tundra. Probably Tacoma b/c I don't need anything real big, but would like a truck.

I don't know much about the Scion. If it's the car I'm thinking of (I'll go back and look at your link) I personally think they're ugly.

BTW, you need to call me... especially if you're still interested in moving this way!

Okay, I just looked at the link. Not the same car I was thinking of. Not bad looking but kind of plain. I would assume it would get in the neighborhood of 22-27 MPG which is probably what you're after considering the $3.25+ gas prices.

What's the cost of that car?

If the Altima wasn't so over priced I would suggest it. Awesome car but Nissan has driven the prices up so much that they're not really worth it anymore!

Rascal
06-16-2007, 12:16 PM
It gets 33 on the highway and the cost is about 16-18k.

Rascal, If I remember from earlier threads you are a fairly big guy. Do you fit in it? I am a little closterphobic in cars I guess, but I can't stand driving a car with my knees up around the side of the steering wheel or smashing my nose against the window when I look over may left shoulder.

Well I'll check that before I get too serious obviously, but I a guy at work who is 6'2" sits comfortably inside.

Hilarious! I was thinking shoeboxes on wheels but I like your description better. Isn't this the thing that Jake was driving when he went into road rage mode?

No, Jake drives a Honda Element.

You may be thinking about the Scion xB, not the tC.

If you're looking to buy used (which I would recommend) why not look around at some of the luxury brands 3-4 years old like Acura or Lexus? They're generally sedans not coupes, but their owners took good care of them, they have superb quality, fit, finish, they have the best materials, features, and technology in them. You're gonna get 22 mpg around town generally, but they all recommend premium fuel. You can get by on midgrade just fine though. It certainly won't ruin the engine, it's more a matter of losing some performance.

Buy yourself a Carfax online subscription if you're buying used - most definitely. Run the VIN on everything.

If you're still looking around, go to Edmunds.com for reviews and pricing, KBB.com for reviews, comparisons, pricing. Consumerreports.org for reliability ratings. And as I posted above, definitely buy a Carfax subscription if you're buying used. Run those VINS. There's some other sites out there for reviews - Car and Driver, Motorweek, Testdrive.com or something like that. Yahoo Autos has some good stuff. KBB.com I think you can compare four cars side by side to compare specs. Useful tool.
