There were no dogs at Broncos practice Thursday, but coach Mike Shanahan tossed out a big bone by ending the final day of camp shortly after it began.

"He threw us a bone, and it was great," running back Travis Henry said after Shanahan released his players until next month's minicamp. "I don't think nobody knew it and we were surprised. We've been working hard, looking good as a team, so that's the important thing."

The early ending, which came just after the team stretch, capped a combined 14 days in two practice sessions in the last month. Minicamp begins July 9, and training camp starts later that month.

Shanahan said he released the players early because "we got a lot done."

"We had some big practices," he said. "They still have a few weeks of the offseason conditioning program, so they'll come back Monday ready to go."

Quarterback Jay Cutler said he would be golfing Monday, then try to take a trip at the end of the month. The second-year QB said the offense is in good shape.

"We put a lot of stuff in," he said. "I think we got a lot done, a lot more than we did last camp, I mean, just getting the new guys in here and putting plays in and repping and getting a good feel for everything."

Cutler also likes Denver's defense, although the unit is no fun to pass against. He said going against starting cornerbacks Champ Bailey and Dré Bly and safeties John Lynch and Nick Ferguson "makes things kind of unrealistic for us as quarterbacks."

"Last year was tough enough with Champ and John and Nick and those guys, and now you put Dré in the mix. It's tough," Cutler said. "They're so good at disguising. ... Other defenses aren't going to be able to do the thing our defense does."

Broncos get early vacation

Practice cut short by Shanahan
By FRANK SCHWAB THE GAZETTE (frank.schwab@gazette.com)

At about 10:30 a.m. Thursday in Englewood, the Denver Broncos celebrated like they won the Super Bowl, then sprinted to the locker room.

Practice was canceled by coach Mike Shanahan. Shanahan called the players up after they stretched and gave them the good news. The practice was the last of the minicamp, and the Broncos don’t have another practice until the mandatory veteran minicamp on July 9.

“It’s a little bone thrown their way because they’ve had some great practices,” Shanahan said.

Running back Travis Henry said he was concerned when the players were called. The offense had some difficulty Wednesday because of strong winds, and he figured a lecture was coming.

“I don’t think anybody knew about it,” Henry said. “It was a surprise.”

The players erupted upon hearing the news, then jumped around in unison before quickly heading off the field.

Henry said he thought the respite was a good reward.

“We’ve been looking good so that’s an important thing,” Henry said.

The players were in a good mood before practice. Most of the defensive players were wearing someone else’s jersey when they came out for practice. Linebackers were wearing jerseys of defensive backs and defensive linemen had found a linebacker to swap with.

Shanahan said he didn’t have a problem with the horseplay. Players sometimes change practice jerseys for kicks.

“As long as we have some great practices, that’s fun,” Shanahan said.
