DirecTV Reveals New HD Channel Plans (http://www.twice.com/article/CA6445880.html?nid=2402)
By Greg Tarr -- TWICE, 5/23/2007 8:35:00 AM
El Segundo, Calif. – DirecTV Wednesday formally released the names of additional programming partners that are onboard to provide expanded high-definition channels this summer and fall.

DirecTV said it has agreements to add four Discovery HD channels, five HD channels from Starz, and HD channels from CNBC and Chiller. In addition, the satellite company said it has recently completed deals with The History Channel and A&E for HD services.

Under the agreement with Discovery Communications, DirecTV will launch four simulcasts — Discovery Channel, TLC, Animal Planet and The Science Channel — and two other channels to be named and launched at a later date. DirecTV said the HD feeds of the four existing networks will launch in September.

Under the Starz agreement, DirecTV will launch three new HD movie channels including, Starz Edge, Starz Comedy and Starz Kids & Family, as well as Starz's East and West coast HD feeds. The new Starz HD channels will launch in September.

The History Channel agreement will include the debut of The History Channel HD, a new 24-hour HD network, and A&E HD in September.

DirecTV said it is also planning to use its expanded platform to debut exclusive HD programming. Disney Channel will provide the exclusive rights to broadcast the premiere HD version of “High School Musical 2.” The HD version of the movie will air a few days after its standard-definition premiere on Disney Channel, DirecTV said.

The satellite provider said it is gearing up to answer the call of its growing HD subscriber base, which has doubled in the last year.

With the launch of DirecTV’s D10 satellite this summer, the satellite TV service provider will have enough capacity to add up to 100 national HD channels by year’s end, in addition to expanding its local HD channel coverage to 75 total markets. DirecTV said it expects to begin adding some of the new HD channels in the third quarter.

“Earlier this year we called 2007 the ‘Year of HD’ and we’re going to deliver on our commitment to offer more HD channels than any other multichannel provider,” stated Derek Chang, DirecTV strategy and development executive VP. “In addition to the networks we've signed to date, we will continue to add more HD programming to our launch list between now and year-end. Demand for HD continues to grow, and with the dramatic expansion of our capacity this summer and the nationwide reach of our service, we are uniquely positioned to lead the industry in the carriage and delivery of HD programming.”

To date, DirecTV has signed agreements or agreements in principle, to launch the following networks: A&E, National Geographic, Bravo, NFL Network, Cartoon Network, SciFi Channel, CNN, Speed, Food Network, TBS, Big Ten Network, The History Channel, HGTV, The Weather Channel, MTV, USA Network, Disney Channel, Versus HD, Toon Disney, TLC, ABC Family, Animal Planet, ESPNNEWS HD, The Science Channel, Starz E/W feeds, Discovery Channel, Starz Edge, The Tennis Channel, Starz Comedy, Showtime West, Starz Kids & Family, The Movie Channel, CNBC and Chiller.

In addition DirecTV also plans to offer the HD feeds of regional sports networks on a nationwide basis this fall, and has commitments from a number of other networks to launch their HD simulcasts. They will be added to the lineup for launch by year-end and will be announced at a later date.

HD networks currently offered by DirecTV include ESPN HD, ESPN2 HD, Discovery HD Theater, HDNet, HDNet Movies, TNT in HD, Universal HD, HBO HD, Showtime HD, an HD pay per view/special events channel and HD feeds from NY- and LA-based broadcast networks ABC, NBC, CBS and FOX (for eligible customers).

DirecTV also offers local HD broadcast channels in 60 cities, representing more than 70 percent of U.S. TV households.

DirecTV said its HD sports programming lineup includes up to 10 MLB games a week and DirecTV plans to offer all MLB games produced in HD beginning with the 2008 season.

DirecTV also offers NBA and NHL games in HD, and through its exclusive NFL Sunday Ticket Superfan subscription, DirecTV customers have access to more than 150 NFL games in HD.

In total DirecTV offered more than 200 HD games last season, which the satellite provider said was “nearly twice as many as cable.”

Early next year, DirecTV plans to launch its D11 satellite, which will support further HD expansion. With the two satellites, DirecTV is planning to deliver more than 1,500 local HD and digital channels and 150 national HD channels, in addition to new advanced programming services for customers.

DIRECTV 10 multipurpose telecommunications spacecraft arrived at the Yubileiny airport of the Baikonur Cosmodrome, Kazakhstan, early this morning, 06 June.

The spacecraft and all the equipment needed for ground operations to prepare the spacecraft for launch, was carried by an Antonov 124 “Ruslan” cargo plane operated by Russian “Polet” carrier.

On the same day the spacecraft will be transported by rail to the state–of–the–art processing center (Building 92A–50, also known as MIK) where an industrial team from the spacecraft manufacturer, Boeing, will conduct autonomous checking and tests of all DIRECTV 10 systems.

DIRECTV 10 is a commercial civil multipurpose communications satellite designed to provide DIRECTV Inc. customers unprecedented local and national High Definition Television (HDTV) throughout continental United States, Alaska and Hawaii. An industry leader, U.S.–based DIRECTV, Inc. delivers satellite–based television services to over 15 million U.S. customers in homes and businesses.

The next-generation DIRECTV spacecraft, built on Boeing 702 bus, will be among the world’s heaviest geostationary satellites. Its launch mass is over 5800 kg. The satellite projected life span is 15 years.

DIRECTV 10 features state-of–the-art antenna and payload subsystems. The powerful payload integrates 32 active and 12 spare National Service Ka-band Traveling Wave Tube Amplifier (TWTAs) in addition to 55 active and 15 spare spot beam TWTAs. The payload is powered by a massive solar array that spans more than 48 meters consisting of ultra triple-junction gallium arsenide solar cells. DIRECTV 10 will receive and transmit programming throughout the United States with two imposing Ka-band reflectors, each measuring 2.8 meters in diameter, and nine other Ka–band reflectors.

The Khrunichev–built Proton Breeze M heavy–class carrier rocket, which will be used for the DIRECTV commercial mission scheduled in July, arrived at its launch site and started its pre-launch preparations earlier (see Khrunichev's Breeze M arrival press release (http://www.khrunichev.ru/khrunichev_eng/live/full_rel.asp?id=14776)). The Khrunichev engineers are conducting routine assembly and test operations with the rocket in the same vehicle assembly building.</td></tr></tbody></table>

The second ILS launch campaign of 2007 is underway. The early team set out on the 31st of May from Virginia to kick off an early summer launch of the DIRECTV 10 from Baikonur. After a long trip and a safe arrival to Moscow, we received quite a welcome! We settled in for a quick one-night stay in Moscow and met up for our usual pre-campaign dinner. But with an early flight to Baikonur scheduled for the next morning, and with the sun going down, it was time to call it a night. Night in Moscow at this time of year means the sun goes down somewhere around 11:00 p.m., so it was hard enough to convince our bodies to go to bed. Then, as everyone tucked in for the night, the fireworks started.

No matter who we asked, there was no explanation for the display. We could only attribute it to the hospitality of the Russians as they welcomed the American launch team back for another campaign.

After breakfast and a very uneventful flight, the early team arrived safe and sound in Baikonur. What a difference a few months can make! Our clothing changed from March's arrival in heavy coats, boots and hats to shorts and sandals in June.

Damn. I have got to get my Dad to do this. Because of the area we live in, we have this home owners contract or something that says we can't have it in front of the house... The dish, I mean.

Anyways, it was a huge hassle logistically, and while we did get it done, we settled on the non-HD dish even though we have a 63 inch LCD (I think) tv downstairs and my folks have a 42 inch LCD upstairs in their room.

I will convince him.

Like beerslug said there where no hidden fees when I got mine either. It was totaly free and just got the normal subscription fee on my bill. In fact it was great I miss on demand but in a year and a half my dish has went out 3 times and all it took to get it back up was a reset. Some people say they have trouble with the mini-dish's but I guess my guy installed it right i will stick with Directv until someone can give me as much with a lower cost.

I think Directv is easy to work with and get free stuff from them. I have 2 of the HR20 HD/DVR models and got them both free. It took some working and complaining over 4 months time but I finally got the last credit on my account last week. Nice. They do have some bugs and are nothing close to TIVO quality menus but they show HD just great and I love recording the games and just zipping right through all the commercials and half time. I can watch a game in less then an hour.

I called for my mother to get the HD recievers and they wanted 200 beans for each of them. Direct TV like Comcast is an effing rip-off. You people should stop spending money with them. :)

I feel better about paying $300 a year for the Sunday Ticket now. I always felt like I was forced to have Direct TV and now I am actually excited to have it. It's been really nice having the locals in HD instead of having to use an off the air antenna. I'd have to agree with others here in saying that DirectTV is a good company and they treat their customers well. Especially if you are on the A List! Wink Wink!

Uh, no you don't. I called them and here's what you can do. You can call them and give them a fake address is Colorado and tell them you are buying a 2nd residence but won't need their assistance in setting up your equipment. But tell them you want to keep the same billing address since you often return their to get your bills. That will give you the CO local channles through Directv and thus all the Bronco games for free. Then you have your attena to get your real local channels. There are people already doing this.

But you still require satellite to pull this off which limits your options. I personally like the Sunday ticket. I like to record other big games to see how our competition is doing.

For everyone else, you can't beat DirecTv for HD, sports in general and NFL viewing.

$200 bucks for a reciever dvr isnt bad. check around. because its a leased one and they go for about 700 bucks in stores. still not a bad deal just break up the payments. but like mentioned earlier-- i wonder if they are going to knock us up for more money with the new channels in hd. i see it happenening but i wonder how much

The big thing this will do is bring in oodles more customers so I doubt we'll see much of an increase.

I got a HD dvr from them for 200.00, then shortly after they came out with the newer model Hd DVR , so after complaining a bit they came out & installed the new one for free plus I got to keep the other one. Just need to eventually get another tv thats HD compatable for our family room and hook up my other hd dvr to it.
