Broncos new tackle feels good at first minicamp practice
Adams says his knees are fine, plans to lose weight

Defensive tackle Sam Adams says his knees are fine, and should be safer now that he’s playing with the Denver Broncos.
“What will help my knees is these cats not cut blocking me anymore,” Adams said.
Adams, who signed with the Broncos on Monday, said he felt good after Tuesday’s minicamp practice. He is coming off arthroscopic knee surgery this offseason, but said that isn’t a problem.
Adams squeezed into a No. 63 jersey for practice, but said he won’t stay in that number for long. He has worn No. 95 most of his career, a number rookie end Jarvis Moss is wearing. Adams will probably try to get the jersey from Moss.
“We’ll see about that,” Adams said.
The number the Broncos are concerned about is Adams’ weight. He has weighed as much as 355 pounds in his career, and said he weighed 345 pounds Tuesday.
Broncos assistant head coach/defense Jim Bates likes big defensive tackles, but he wouldn’t mind seeing a little less of Adams. He said the team would like him to lose about 10 pounds.
“We’d like him at a weight where he can play at least 28-30 snaps a game,” Bates said. “We have to get him at a weight where his endurance will be a factor going into the fourth quarter.”
Adams said he made Pro Bowls at 355 and at 335 pounds, so he didn’t think he would play better at a lighter weight.
But after experiencing the thin air of Colorado during his first practice, he figured the weight loss might be good.
“I’ll be a lot lighter this year so I can breathe in practice,” Adams said.
