Bush says Cold War over, Russia 'not enemy'
AFP
Published: Tuesday June 5, 2007

US President George W. Bush declared Tuesday that the Cold War has ended and Russia was "not our enemy" and should not be concerned about the extension of the US anti-missile shield in Europe.

"The Cold War is over. It ended. People in the Czech Republic do not have to choose between being friends of the US or friends of Russia. You can be both," Bush said during a joint press conference with Czech President Vaclav Klaus and Premier Mirek Topolanek.

"We do not believe in this zero sum world. We do not believe that one should force a country to choose," Bush added.

Bush said that he would assure Russian President Vladimir Putin that "Russia is not our enemy." Missile defence was a purely defensive measure "aimed not at Russia but at true threats," he said.

The US president said that Washington and Moscow could work together to achieve common objectives. "One objective is to safeguard free nations from the possibility of a missile attack launched from a rogue regime. That is a true threat to peace."

That message would be delivered at the G8 summit in Germany starting on Wednesday and later when Putin visits the US, Bush said.

The US proposal to site a tracking radar on Czech soil as part of its extended missile defence shield was one of the main issues broached during the talks.

Im not sure if he held a press confernece right now and said that "Water is wet" that I'd believe him. Sure I've thought so myself all these years but it would make me take a closer look at the issue.

I'm not a Bush fan, but this whole concept is beyond dumb.

After the comments in the media over the past few days he was just reminding the press that the cold war ended. I actually remember it happening when RR was president.

the G 8 summit is the Press ?

Check the news of last week. We seem to have stirred the ire of some of the press by something we did, the president was responding to their comments. I think if you looked it up there might be an epiphany looming on your future.

Too lazy to check the truth?

The US media commented about the installation during the week and said that we were no longer in a cold war situation with the soviets. Bush simply reiterated that the war was indeed over and that the missiles were not to shoot at the Russians but to use against terrorists. From the sounds of things there are a great many people that do not understand that.

If the Cold War is over why is Bush installing ABM systems in Poland and the Czech Republic?

In fact when Bush unilaterally revoked the ABM Treaty in 2002 he kick started the Cold War all over again.

Russia has good reason to fear a US nuclear first strike.

Our Prez. and crew have made the world a much more unstable place.

The cold war is over, but it does not take much to push things in that direction. Putin is an old KGB guy, who is inclined already to mistrust the US, and any shield would be percived by him as a threat. I would be curious to know how the Russion people feel about Americans in general right now, vs 10 years ago -- my guess is that as a people we are less trusted at this point. Putin is gaining more control over the political process in Russia, and what information is shared with those in it, over time if we are painted in a poor light, and if we are seen as potential agressors, good feelings that might have exsisted will continue to wane.

Good Post!

With the current situations involving the US I can see the concern exhibited by Russia. I don't believe that there is any merit, but I do not believe other countries trust us as much today as they did 6 years ago.

My guess is that you are not aware of the real situation in the world. But what can I expect from someone that authored such garbage? I've read some of your stuff and I honestly don't think you would know reality if it hit you in the head.

Keep believing the way you do. The rest of the normal thinking world will consider the facts before we get too excited about your opinion.

Funny how you refer to his stuff as "garbage" without refuting a single point he made.

Do you honestly think that his conspiracy theory holds any thing in it worth comment? Each of his theories have been debunked by professional engineers. If you feel that he is correct in his wild accusations, by all means keep believing, maybe the tooth fairy will be by to visit you later.

Let me guess, you are a liberal and assume that because I don't believe the wild accusations by the other guy that I have to be conservative. Nice way to generalize. It doesn't fit, but nice try.

I can only assume you are attempting to change the subject here because you are unable to refute said points.

Yes, I'm a liberal.

And, even if incorrect, I don't think my assumption was unreasonable insofar as your response to the post in question was very similar in style and approach to that of the typical Limbaugh or O'Reilly listener.

You don't have to take my word for it. If you know how to read, you can verify "the real situation in the world" for yourself.

Check out this scholarly paper THE RISE OF US NUCLEAR PRIMACY from last spring's FOREIGN AFFAIRS. It describes the new reality on the Russian border. The Russians and China too are blind to the east. The US can lob nukes into Moscow or Bejing any time we want from our Trident subs in the north Pacific -- without being detected.

You didn't know that?

We also have a large new radar site on the north tip of Norway -- just a few miles from the Russian border. Another one is planned for the Aleutians -- or possibly has already been completed.

I guarrantee you their purpose is not to deter Iran.

I don't listen to either of your favorites. Limbaugh is a mean spirited person that has no ability to see the whole picture. O'Reilly is just someone that values his opinion above all others.

Why don't you try to do better, at this point you are failing.

That's BS.

One fact he cited was that Bush was installing ABM systems in Poland and the Czech Republic.

Do you deny this?

If you categorically dismiss his entire post as "garbage" then it would seem so.

As I said before, even if my assumption about you was incorrect, it was nonetheless reasonable insofar as your "rebuttal," in this instance, resembled, in manner and style, that of a typical neocon.

I would guess that you assumed some facts that are not correct. First, I wasn't referring to the argument you have pointed out, I was referring to all of the conspiracy nuts that are running around the country, that dude is one of them.

What you might find is that there a number of Americans that don't fit the mold as liberal or conservative. Some that look at the wider scope of things might seem to be in both of the groups you mention. There are those of us that see things from both sides of the table and decide what is right for us. If you have problems with someone that can see both sides, please ignore what I write.
