Saturday at Fan Fair my son's and I were waiting around at club level waiting for Q&A when Jay appeared with two security guys. My 15 year old son went over to him(wearing a cutler jersey) and asked for a autograph. Jay stopped and told him ," Yes I will sign, as soon as you get in a line." Not a big deal, but he acted like a real asshole. I told my kids that he probably gets asked 24/7 so he doesn't mean to be that way. To be honest, I am now conflicted, he was a jackass, but I will forget and move on. That was quite a blow to the image I had of him.

Yes it is a big deal if you are going to call him an a-hole. If the autographs were being done via people standing in a line, then his comment to your son, my son or anyone else was appropriate. If you let one person work outside of a system then it becomes unfair to everyone else. I can only imagine the number of people that were seeking autographs that day and his certainly is one of the most sought after. To do it in an orderly fashion is the only way to get it done fairly to all.

I'm not trying to downplay your experience here but he was probably told not to sign autographs out of line. It could get a big chaotic if the players all just started signing wherever the fans asked them to. Maybe not. I'm just trying to look at it from both perspectives. I do think it would be hard being Jay Cutler in Denver right now.

Everyone was told not to sign autographs out of line, the security guys would push them to the next station, but that didnt stop Rod Smith, Daniel Graham, Brandon Marshall, Ian Gold, Brandon Stoakly, and the list goes on and on. I'm sorry DSMOOT, I dont care if it's not fair for everyone else. There were six people in the club area.

I heard that Cutler was a great guy, but you know what, actually I don't care as long as he's a great player.
We should stop telling our kids to idolise sportsmen - the biological accident that makes you a great athelete does not automatically trigger sound judgement and great character, in some cases quite the opposite...we should be looking for these guys to do the job of entertaining on the pitch and stay out of jail and that's about it.
Having said that, I think its pretty harsh to judge a guy based upon a 10-second interaction at a busy event.
Added to that, being more of a sticker for the rules might actually make for a great QB - I can imagine that you'd get the same reaction out of Peyton Manning........

Sorry Spider, i dont buy into that. Its one thing when another adult goes out of HIS/HER way to snap at a child. But its totally another when said child is taking it upon themselves to try and cut in line or break the rules because their parents have a lack of discipline on their children. Accountability man.

I'm not clear what exactly you'd have jay do instead. Is a light from Heaven supposed to appear while angels sing 'Hallelujiah' as Jay disrupts the line of people who have been waiting as long (maybe longer) than you and your child for the same thing? Telling him to get in line was a good thing, not a bad thing.
As for another adult correcting my kid, if they're right, then i'm ok with it. Doing it in a disrespectful or patronizing way is not ok, but making it 'go time' is doing nothing but showing your kid how NOT to act.

Great post. I don't fault Cutler at all. I still hear stories about how Elway would curse out a person in Stormtheplains' situation. "I'm eating dinner! Leave me alone!" These players are regular men and all Cutler did was follow the rules to prevent a tidal wave of rule breaking. Do others sign anyway? Yes. Does Cutler? No. Does that make him a Jerk? No. He's just a player

Ok, but while that's true, when you bring your experience to a forum and share it people are going to comment. I think some people here may have overstepped their bounds in regards to how his child should behave, but people here are free to express their opinions on parenting techniques and then let Storm take from that what he will. It's important to recognize that we can't always get what we want when we want it - and certainly we shouldn't be resentful toward people who remind us of this in the interest of fairness to others.

Oh, no question. I probably would have been really upset at that age. I don't think anyone here has said both the desires of Storm and his son were abnormal or out of the ordinary. People just seem (IMO) to be explaining that Cutler's rejection of their request was actually just an endorsement of fairness to others and not a personal slight against them.

Actually i was inconsiderate and rude. To John Elway of all people. When i was 15 i snuck across Hinkley football field and got a autograph from him. I was happy as **** but it was totally inconsiderate of me. And you know what? And unfortuantely my parents werent there when i got the autograph but they would have corrected me for doing it. Different players will react differently to different situations and this situation is no different. Instead of getting defensive about what Cutler said Storm should of explained to his son that although it was a nice attempt to get the autograph they will just have to do it the way its supposed to be done. Lets remember here that Jay didnt cuss at the kid or get derogatory with him. He was just letting the kid know that he would have to wait in line to get the autograph. Was there a line already? If there were only 6 people in the club area and there was no line, where the **** was your son supposed to line up? If there was a line, why the **** did your son try to cut through all the waiting? Thats cheap, and fraudulent and I would have kicked your sons ass then kicked your ass for letting your son do that. Then kicked Cutler's ass because he made me wait in line. You know what, I probably just would have got out my ass whooper and started in on everyone.

Jay should have learned by Plummer's lead and flipped the 2 of you off.... then pointed said finger in the general direction of Wyoming :)

At 15 years old, your son should have known better than to ask Cutler for an autograph when there was a line of people waiting too.
If Jay said it in a bad tone, then yeah... you can be upset, but if not... well, he did the RIGHT thing.

I couldn't care less about this entire thing, but big deal. The kid feels he has a chance to get an autograph without waiting in line so he ask Cutler to sign it for him. Cutler says no, I must follow the rules to a tee, or else I am comprimising my ethical views. I am a man of the law. Only me an Anubis were brought up this way.

We were on the club level waiting for Q&A, There were six people in the club area, two of them worked for the broncos. Jay and 3 security guards came walking through, where he was on his way to the south stands for photographs( No autographs allowed with pictures), my son walked over and asked if he could sign his jersey, jay while still walking said if you get in a line. There were no people waiting in line for his autograph, that took place 2 hours later. Of the 4 other people in the club level, no one else ran over to get a autograph. My son was not rude, he was polite. No if you bone heads can understand the situation better if will help you understand that jay could have stopped for a second without taking away from people that weren't in line yet.

Would that have been fair to the people already waiting in those long lines for an autograph? Cutler could have stopped, but he didn't. You have a choice: You can get mad and resent him for not stopping and that will change nothing and only make you feel bad, or you can shrug it off. It's your choice.

I agree with rbackfactory to a point. It's no big deal either way. But I think I can honestly say I wouldn't encourage my kids to circumvent the rules to get an autograph. You're lucky Jay didn't pick the kid up and toss him 90 yards like he did to my little nephew when he asked him for an autograph at a Vanderbilt game in '05. Bam, straight into the field goal post, and you know what? Ever since then my cousin's multiple sclerosis has been cured and he's better than ever.
Your son should thank Jay for even talking to him.
Jay's a pretty silent guy, I had a pal of mine make a bet with him that he could get more than three words out of him in a conversation. Jay replied, "You lose." - and my friend hasn't bothered talking to him ever since.
Stop whining.

I'll give the benefit of the doubt to Storm's kid and assume it was an honest mistake. Cutler did the right thing in telling him to get in line, assuming he was reasonably polite in doing so.
If it was intentionally done, Cutler (or any other adult) gets more leeway in his rebuttal, within limits.
In Storm's shoes, I would have used the incident as a teaching tool for my kid. Then again, my kids are much younger, and are getting those lessons now.
In summary, civilized society by definition relies on us all treating each other with respect. If we all start teaching our kids it's ok to cut in line while others wait (by the rules), then civilized society decays that little bit each time. Unacceptable, IMO.

Why do people have this fixation on trying to view athletes as being great people?
What common link is there between throwing a sphereoid with accuracy and being a humanitarian?
He's 24, was at a team function that probably basically took up a ton of his time as it was, and is trying to get prepared for the upcoming season so he doesn't find himself pissing blood by week 2.
Get over the player worship. Most of these guys are assholes. The ones that aren't are just normal guys with exceptional athletic ability. They aren't Ghandi, Jesus, and FDR all rolled into one and they aren't walking around looking to make your day.
The function provided a way to get an autograph, if your son wanted one bad enough he should have gone through the appropriate steps. He obviously didn't, maybe its a lesson that'll better serve him in life when say, colleges, employers, etc. all don't bend over backwards to accommodate him.
America's youth is pervaded with a sense of self entitlement and a belief that the world really does revolve around them. Thank you very much for adding another person to that population. When he's 26 and is still leaching off you to get by maybe you'll think back to the day you justified his belief that his desires come before the obligations of another.

Here is the sequence of events.
It sounds to me like the photo session was planned for that time and autograph signing (complete with waiting in line) was scheduled for a later time... now this doesn't necessarily mean that Jay couldn't have signed the jersey for your son right then; I think he was just saying (perhaps a tad too brusquely...) "yeah, we'll be doing that later".
We waited in a long line to get Eddie Mac's autograph last September.... it was well worth every second of the wait and Eddie was as friendly and nice as could be.

I just don't get the whole "waiting in line for one of the Broncos autographs" thing. Without fail, every time I've gone to Denver for a game, I've been able to get photos, video and/or autographs of the entire team going in for practices a day or two prior to the actual game I was attending....the area between the players' parking lot and the south entrance where the players walk to and from practice is gated off perfectly for autograph hounds. 90% of the players stop to sign whatever you have......and it's 100% free and never crowded.

Wow deja vu, about 25 years or so ago Herschel Walker was running in a track meet at the Silverdome, where the Lions played...I went specifically to see if I could get his autograph...as he warmed up, I hung over the rail and asked for his autograph...he said later in the day when his races were over he would be at a table on the concourse signing autographs and that he would do it there...well I watched him all day...and when he finally started up to the concourse, I rushed over and asked for his autograph, he said he couldn't and that I had to go to the concourse and wait in line like everyone else...and that's what I did...and he politely signed three different items for me...

Some people care about themselves and don't even think what affect their actions could have on others (its call selfishness). These same people can never be wrong (in their minds), even if everyone else is telling them they are. They are right, and anybody and everybody else are the ones who are wrong. Because, damn well right, they KNOW they themselves are the ones that are always right.

Give me a freaking break already. When I read bad experience I was like oh no, Jay did something bad, like when Warren Sapp spat a luggy at me and my friends (long story and some raider hating going on) or something of that nature. Not telling your son to get in line, because those were the guidelines. You are raisingyour son to be part of the entitlement generation if you are at all concerned by this event. I would have told my son that Jay has to follow the rules so that everyone has a equal chance. Sorry, but that is life.

Don't read more into what I said. If he refused to sign outside of line because he was told not to BUT did it in a way that was less than friendly, it truely was a bad experience for your son and I am sorry for your son. Otherwise, I give the benefit of the doubt to Jay regardless of what the other players did. As my wife reminds me, it is not always the content of the words but the manner in which it was delivered that sometimes has a greater effect.
I remember growing up in Baltimore and Frank Robinson refused to sign autographs for anyone within a couple hours of game time when other players did. It clearly stated on the signs around the field level, NO AUTOGRAPHS. Frank was not the most outwardly friendly player, but he was consistent and not mean about it. You could catch him before and after the game, outside the stadium without a problem.

Its not an excuse, its quite accurate. The first part of his post is exactly what i talked about earlier in the thread. I cant help it you cant understand that concept. Is it my fault your a moron and didnt understand my point? Uh, no. And seeing how you knew that would be my answer you already tried to give yourself a way out of it cause you knew that was what i was repping him for. Where else in the thread did i talk about the downfall of society? Uh, thats right genius. NO WHERE. lol

Nothing bull**** about it. Other than me NOT taking that part out of the quote you cant find any other post in which i state that being rude is the downfall of humanity. You saw it in the quote and took off running with it. Again, i cant help it if you cant stay with the topic of what I was discussing in regards to this matter. I mean, if you truly feel that is what im implying than by all means pull up all the posts that I posted about that. Ill wait.......Ha!

Now Cutler didn't smile and kiss some ass. Oh lord this is bad news. Get a grip people everyone has good and bad days. Maybe he was puking his guts out and if he smiled would have blown chunks. This thread is dumb and the overreaction on both sides is dumb. Get over it.

Really it depends on the tone he used.
If he had his dickhead tone, Id have kicked his ass. If he was polite about it, I would have said OK.
LOL LOL LOL
