Croyle figures he's ready to be No. 1

By DOUG TUCKER
AP Sports Writer

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The football came zipping out of Brodie Croyle's hand.

It soared 50 yards and came to rest with perfect precision in the arms of a wide receiver streaking toward the back of the end zone.
Brett Favre couldn't have thrown a more perfect pass. No wonder Trent Green is clamoring to be traded to Miami.
For at least this one play in practice, when the defense wasn't hitting for real, the third-round draft pick from Alabama looked as if he's ready to start in the NFL.

Does he feel like he is?
"I do," Croyle said Sunday.
"If you'd asked me the same question last year, I'd have probably said the same thing. But last year I wasn't. But through a whole year of learning and a whole offseason of continuing to get a little bigger, I feel like I'm ready to go."

Whether he's ready or not will ultimately be Herm Edwards' decision. And there's no way the coach is going to show his hand.
"I have a while to do that," Edwards said Sunday, the final day of the Chiefs' mandatory three-day minicamp. "The competition's been good. You don't rush it. It all takes care of itself."

In the meantime, Croyle, Green and Damon Huard all continue to share the ball equally in practice. Green, the aging starter for most of the last six seasons, waits impatiently for the Chiefs to agree to a trade that will send him to the Dolphins.

He and Miami already have worked out a contract. He maintains Croyle is Kansas City's quarterback of the future and that any competition in the Chiefs' camp will be "weighted" to Croyle's advantage.
Plus, hardly anybody thinks the Chiefs will keep Green and his $7.2 million salary as a backup.

Croyle, a soft-spoken, second-year pro, is doing his best to sidestep all the controversy.
"We've all had the same amount of reps basically the whole time," he said. "I'm going to get my shot, but at the same time I've still got to earn it."

By no means does he view the job as his to lose.
"I view it as up in the air," he said. "As long as I have the best day or the best camp or whatever, then I've got a shot at being a starter."
Croyle made several eye-catching plays during a 90-minute workout in front of about 15,000 fans on Saturday, but also misfired a couple of times.

"I've still got a long way to go," he said. "There were a lot of things Saturday I could have done better. I have a tendency to want to push the ball when I could easily have taken a checkdown. I've gotten better at that. But I've still got a long way to go. I still have the rest of (team practices) and training camp to get ready to go."

Neither Croyle nor Huard, who started eight games last year while Green recuperated from a severe concussion, says the ongoing quarterback uncertainty is a problem.

"Not with us," Croyle said of Green. "He's a pro. He comes in, he's the same

Trent. My locker's right next to his. We still have the same conversations we've always had. So it hasn't translated over to us."
But isn't it hard to get a rhythm going with everyone sharing equally in practice time?

"It is," Croyle said. "It would be easier if you took 60 percent of the reps like if you were the starter. But you have to earn that right. You just have to make the most of the reps you get."

As he visited with reporters on the edge of the practice field, it was obvious that Croyle had prepared carefully for all questions about Green and Miami sure to come his way.

"It doesn't do us any good to talk about it. Trent's situation is Trent's situation," he said. "He doesn't bring it into the locker room. He comes out here and practices like he's a Kansas City Chief. Until otherwise, that's how he's going to do it. I have a lot to worry about myself."

No offense meant by my original reply, by the way. The artical just seemed like a Chiefs offseason fluff piece with no real football information, therefore irrelevant and unimportant to Broncos football fans.

Brodie will be a very good quarterback for the Chorfs... if he can stay healthy. Thats a big if... but the guy can play. I had the unfortunate oppertunity to watch his fist start for Alabama up close and personal at Arkansas. The only other guy who wowed me as much with his arm is Cutler.

I was on record saying the Broncos should draft him. Happily they got Cutler instead but to me it's ironic that I pimp this guy and then the Cheeps draft him. Makes me feel a little queezy inside. He has a strong arm I think he had the third strongest arm in the draft after Kellen Clemons and Cutler. The fragile part is a concern though. He missed a lot of games due to an assortment of injuries.

As for the content, it was a good enough read. It's the offseason, and there has been some much refried crap posted lately that anything football related is refreshing.

True, although he has gotten bigger since last year. Right now he looks to be about the same size as Trent Green and Damon Huard. NFL Network compared his body type and size to Drew Brees and I think that is a good comparison. Of course, Croyle also has 2 inches on Brees.

Um. No. No. They were two of the best deep throws I've seen from a KC quarterback in years. That's mostly because Green can't throw a deep ball to save his life.

A lot of people think that kind of stuff is worth paying for. I am not one of them. I love watching the games not being armchair GM. Just me though.

Really? How come WPI is pretty much widely regarded as a complete joke over there on Crap Planet, where both Athan and Bob are the butt of many jokes. Even the one Chiefs fan I personally know who subscribed to that publication canceled it because "it was the biggest waste of money ever"

Hey Zach,

Do you remember the last time the Cheaps made the Super bowl?

If you have problems with that question, hurry up and ask your grandpa, he'll know...
So, are we moving on from your lack of football knowledge line of posts? I am happy to talk about everything on here but this jumping around these deflections from you? Pretty weak...are you going to tap out on this one so I can respond to the post above? Or are you going to respond to my post.

Like I said, its not for me...but a lot of people like it and they do indeed have a good amount of inside info. Sandwiched between that info is a lot of fluff and alot of rumors that don't pan out...more fluff than a lot of people (like myself) care for. But they have their hits...hell they predicted the Chiefs would draft Tamba Hali a few years back. That impressed me. That training camp blog is also fantastic.

Not everything is so simply black and white. They do good and they do bad. It is what it is. Some people like it and some people don't.

Alrighty...tap out acknowledged. Since you don't want to talk about your past attempts to talk football when forced to I am happy to move on.

The Chiefs? Haven't won a superbowl in a long time. Thats no secret. But hey teams can go loooonnngggg runs without winning the big one. Am I right?

Cool Zach we are getting somewhere with football talk...

Now name the 3 teams that do not have a more recent playoff win than the Cheaps?

The Broncos have won more recently...and they deserve all that comes to them for that. But hey, our time will come...I can't wait...and if it doesn't come soon I will still enjoy the hell out of every Sunday in front of the TV or in Arrowhead with my friends and family. I love the game of football. This team has given me so many good times over the years shared with people I love...its wacky to think about.

I think all the Bronco fans pre 97 would say the same thing about their team.

Brody Croyle was a human pinata at 'Bama. He's gonne get hurt in the NFL too. I'd love to see him win the starting job in KC.

Thats cool, I just thought I would drop some info here before the circle jerk got out of hand.

It's nice to know that if our circle jerk gets out of control you and Bob will be in the middle.

Winning playoff games is not important it's selling out every game. That's the only real important thing, according to King Carl anyway.

Huh? Pre 1997? Denver has been one of the best teams in the NFL since 1977 not 1997. They just didn't become #1 until 1997. That's a huge difference from the sorry state of the Kansas City Cheeps.

I highly doubt you got inside information. If you did, then you would be yapping about it on here about it and trying to impress and gain approval from Taco, Kaylore, Socal etc. because your whole life is revolved around the Orange Mane and Crap planet.

Please note the word "we."

I didn't say I get inside information, although frequently I get it before anyone else. Nick visits the stadium several times a week and has long-running sources there that give him inside information.

Also, I don't and would never post it here. That would be a violation of my deal with Warpaint.

This thread probably belongs in the Butt.

That said, Brodie Frayle is a good guy and has the right personality to play football. I just think he's a three year project. Then again, the Germ offense is so easy a caveman could do it, so Croyle executing that offense is probably not out of this word. I would personally try and leave Huard in and test the offensive line out. It would be unfair to try and develop a Qb behind a crappy offensive line. Getting killed like that would hamper any chance at him progressing.

At KMartin, here is the post where Mediator exposes you as a fraud:

I'm not sure why anyone would think Brodie is a three-year project. If anything he was more NFL-ready than Cutler.

I saw it on NFL Network. Impressive throw. He uncorked another bomb later on.

One thing is as certain as death and taxes: Bob showing up on the OMane to post in threads with the word "gay" in the title.

That's just because if the word gay is in the title it's obviously a Chef thread.

It did: Hence the Butt!:approve:

Actually, I'm not a mod because I would ban too many Chief fans for trolling. I also probably would have left the AngryLlama thread on the front page.

This thread has potential, although I can't disagree with anything else you said. The Mane seems to be less trolled than in years past. Either that or maybe it's just because I have them all on ignore???

I didn't mean that the thread should be moved because it was a dumb idea for a thread, but rather it became a pissing match between Chef trolls and so lost whatever momentum it had. Anyway, I tried to offer a legitimate opinion on Mr. Frayle. We'll see how he pans out.
