EWS is one of those movies (like so many other Kubrick films) that takes repeated viewing to "get it," IMO.
Everytime I watch the film, it seems like deeper layers of meaning are revealed.
In many ways, Kubrick forces the viewer to come to his own conclusions about the deeper meaning of the film - he provides lots of subtle clues and almost subliminal suggestions, but he definitely doesn't spoonfeed anything to you.
I found a very interesting review of EWS a few weeks ago:
http://www.movienavigator.org/eyeswideshut.htm
I agree with most of the reviewer's analysis.

I have both EWS and Vanilla Sky (Obre los Ojos).
EWS is pretty strange ... don't think I get it completely, but I liked it purely as a study of excess and desire among the rich, and how material envy and sexual preoccupation clouds the mind for what really makes us happy.
Obre los Ojos (Vanilla Sky) is a mind-spinner of a film, something of an upside down plot like The Matrix, Being John Malkovich or Memento, or even Menagerie, the two-hour Star Trek TV pilot. Vanilla Sky is a wonderful film.

EWS is an initiation film.....
Initiation to what, the Priory of Sion? The rich, masked people performing their Dan Brown rituals from 'The Da Vinci Code'? :~ohyah!: Exposing the idle rich and their silly excesses ... more and more outrageous the richer they get. Sydney Pollock and the half-dead girl with no name (he called her "the one with the great t**s") ... the demure woman's strange infatuation of obsessive love for Cruise's character - a man she met just once before on her father's deathbed. These are studies in self-absorption and misdirected emotional energies, due to the bizarre materialism and envy modern Amwerica fosters through mass media (listen to 'Creep' by Radiohead and you'll get it.)
Actually, I've known many very, very rich people in LA, and most are pretty boring. I think the excesses of envy and boredom are more a generational problem ... very few rich people over 55 or 60 exhibit any real oddities in my experience. But their kids are always freaks! The ones that make the fortunes are usually nothing more than workaholics.
