Since I know nothing about rigs, what is a better gear ratio? I know my pickup has 3:73s and the next step 'steeper' is a 4:10 for my power down low at the expense of higher RPMs when cruising. In a rig, do you still want the steep gears because the tranny will still allow you cruise comfortably, or do you want 'highway gears' for cruising. I am assuming that you still need steep gears? Who builds the trannies and how is the gearing in those? I've seen guys who have to shift 75 times before they get to 30mph and have always wondered what they have in their rig when they are doing that.

I kinda like the yellow one.....

depends on what you do with your ride ..........the set up I have now is 3406b 15 over 3:55 tachs out at 2400 RPMS , I will go through 7 gears in a intersection ;D ...... I prefer the 3:55 cause of fuel millage and i can carry a pretty heavy load , grossing 81K I can go up South Pass @ 38 mph ......
the yellow one has 20 ton Front end and 40 ton tandems 600hp kitty and a 18 speed , that bastard would carry Mount Rushmore

I have 3:73 and my wife has 4:10 those are pretty common in pickups.

the set up from hell that I drove 400 Big cam cummins 4&5 Browning marriage box 3:73 gears .. double sticker shifted that bastard 20 times when loaded , miss a gear pull over and start all over again ..... hated it on hills or in a city , no power steering ........screw that old school stuff

Yeah that was back when trucking was damn hard work ,75% of the truckers today couldnt have done it , it required tremendous upperbody strength and a set of legs from hell , no cruise control , and a clutch that was hard as hell ....
10hours behind the wheel in one of those was a workout ........
