Even "moderate additional" greenhouse emissions are likely to push Earth past "critical tipping points" with "dangerous consequences for the planet," according to research conducted by NASA and the Columbia University Earth Institute.

With just 10 more years of "business as usual" emissions from the burning of coal, oil and gas, says the NASA/Columbia paper, "it becomes impractical" to avoid "disastrous effects."

The forecast effects include "increasingly rapid sea-level rise, increased frequency of droughts and floods, and increased stress on wildlife and plants due to rapidly shifting climate zones," according to the NASA announcement.

Recent Climate Reports Underestimated How Soon
By heralding the new research paper, NASA is endorsing science that places considerably more urgency on the need to reduce emissions to avoid "disastrous effects" of global warming than was evident in the recent reports from the world's scientists coordinated by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.

The new NASA release emphasizes the danger of "strong amplifying feedbacks" pushing Earth past "dangerous tipping points."

Scientists have been warning for several years that such tipping points are the greatest threat from manmade global warming — and what makes it potentially catastrophic for civilization.

There was an interesting interview with a NASA critic on NASA's prioritizing man on the moon and mars, instead of stuff like studying water amounts in soil and finding a way to deflect astroids on NPR this am. the Head of Nasa responds tomorrow.

I wonder what the NASA shuttles are doing to the ozone layer. If man can alter the course of global warming, it would make sense that a rocket burning fuel and going through the ozone layer does some damage. NASA better study that before they lecture us about everyday activities...

Are you telling me that's not a logical conclusion? If you light a match and hold it a few inches away from something, it will burn more quickly than if you held the match a few feet away.

Not only do Shuttles cause global warming , I heard that Liberals want to give NASA the right to abort missions when ever they want ..........

Now this was about dumb .........Everyone knows NASA sprinkles in magic fairy dust to stop pollution ;D
but NASA is pretty damn important , I watched Armageddon;D

Not a damn thing,

If man can alter the course of global warming, it would make sense that a rocket burning fuel and going through the ozone layer does some damage. NASA better study that before they lecture us about everyday activities...

What would make sense about it? Why would you think a rocket going through
the ozone layer would do anything to it?
Do you even understand the mechanism by which chlorofluorocarbon
(freon) was breaking down the ozone layer? Now how does that apply
to the shuttle?

What the hell does that have to do with damaging the ozone layer?

I understand the greenhouse effect.

That's an odd link. this morning Michael Griffin, bushii's nasa head, said global warming wasn't a concern.

Is it 2009, yet?

My latest issue of National Geo is all about "The Big Thaw." The Greenland and Antarctic ice pack is melting much faster than first hypothesized. So are the world's glaciers. There are millions of people worldwide who depend on those glaciers as their year round water source. Oooops! Whether you believe in global warming or not, it looks like we're all going for a ride. Fasten your seat belts. ;D

no, no, no. The head of Nasa just said this could be a good thing for the planet! Surely he'd know.

I understand the greenhouse effect.

Sorry if I came on a little too strong. Now it's true that chlorofluorocarbons
are powerful greenhouse gases and do contribute to global warming.
But the damage to the ozone layer caused by chlorofluorocarbons and
the effect of greenhouse gases on climate change are two separate
phenomena. One is not related to the other, and each could happen
independently of the other. Basically the sun's UV light breaks down
chlorofluorocarbons and the chlorine in them combines with the O3 molecules
and convert them back into O2. This then frees up the chlorine which
breaks down more O3 molecule. One chlorine atom can destroy
thousands of O3 molecules. So unless the shuttle is releasing gases
that can catalize the O3 molecules, it isn't going to hurt the ozone layer.
And even if it did, the shuttle's exhaust is miniscule as compared to the
millions of auto and home air conditioners that were made in the past
decades.
