Anybody have memories from that notorious line of dives and whores? There were some class businesses in my neighborhood of 14th and Monroe - The Golden Ox, Bastiens. Then further west was the Zanzibar and that pisshole Capitol Hill, God only knows what went on there. National Jewish at Colorado and Colfax.
I remember Colfax as Bum Central. My god, what a parade of bums there were on that street. They were classier bums than those downtown on Larimer. My Mom was a sweethearted woman and one day a bum came and asked her for something to eat and a drink off the hose. Jeez, that guy obviously made a mark on the sidewalk or something, because every summer after that the bums magically came knocking at the door. It was funny in a way, because I had to stand behind the door with a baseball bat in case one of them wanted to come into the house. My Mom was fairly crazy, now that I think about it. There was only two times I had to step out and say "Hi". My Mom was nuts, just plain crazy. You'd have to put a gun to my head to move anywhere near Colfax. Been there, done that.

Hey, little Ethiopia and Rock n Roll Blvd just up on Colfax. Nothing like Guardian Angels walking around while I go to the Blue Bird and such. If you stay at the Ramada on Colfax, they call it Rock n Roll Hotel. The bands stay there when playing the venues around Colfax. Would I live there? If I was poor.

Colfax is not nearly as bad anymore. The city has been working hard on urban renewal projects up and down the whole section from I-25 to Colorado...
It's not quite in the clear when it comes to crime and mischief yet, but it's MUCH better.

I was walking around downtown this past weekend, and some crazy homeless guy came up and started talking to the girlfriend and I.
He asked for 15 cents because he wanted to become the next American Idol. When I told him I had no change, he started rambling about how hard it was being homeless, and that he really wanted to preach the word of God, but that it was hard because he was a drunk. He let off a couple other choice gems before going on his way.
Oh, and he had an eye patch. I feel bad that he lost his eye, but man did it just add to the hilarity of the whole thing.

Was this guy tall? I think I ran into him last December. I had just eaten/gotten a little buzzed at the Wynkoop, and was on my way to an Av's game at the Pepsi Center, and a guy like you described walked up to me.
"Where are you from," he said, and I ignored him. He kept asking until he was like "don't be scared I just want to know where you're from," I was finally like "here, I'm from Denver." He's like "God bless you."
Maybe we should do what Giuliani did and euthanize them all... put them in a room... get them really high on opium and nitrus... just keep getting them high into a glorious climax... then most of them will all just OD. The ones that pass out.. IDK, you got the Platte river... or, we're always looking for alternative fuel, right?

The majority of homeless people I know are just really stupid people who have made a ton of bad decisions.
Like one in my family... I remember growing up when she was making choices and I constantly find myself thinking "do you really have any idea how stupid that would be."
I think if we fix our educational and health care system, get better funding for tuition, rase minimum wage, and stop ****ing our war veterans... that would go a long way into stopping homelessness.

Colfax is a trip, that's for sure. You can get anything you want on Colfax. I'm shut of it myself. I had enough of that street long ago. I had a job as a busboy at the Whitespot on Harrison and Colfax and some knucklehead went nuts on the cops just as I was walking out at midnight with my paycheck in cash. The cops tear gassed him and he backpedaled into me and they arrested me too.
The madder I got about that, the madder they got. They beat the crap out of him and I shut up quick. I shed myself of that neighborhood long ago.

I was walking downtown outside Tabor Center with my old roommate and his girlfriend and this HUGE homeless dude starts making a beeline for me from down the street. He gets about 3 feet from me and just starts screaming "YOU'RE WITH THEM, AREN'T YOU!? YOU TELL THEM TO STOP WATCHING ME! GODDAMN FBI! GODDAMN CIA!"

A great deal of homeless folks are veterans. And just because someone makes bad choices and ends up homeless doesn't mean that we should treat them like garbage and suggest they be euthanized. There will always be homelessness in every corner of the world, regardless of how advanced society is or whether we do anything to fix the things you suggest need fixing. It's up to those of us who are more fortunate than they are to provide comfort to them and try to help them get back on their feet. We need to stop thinking only from our own, more fortunate perspectives and have some compassion for people. They are human beings just like you that are in a bad place and need help.

Couple of Colfax stories. I had a friend in High School about 1966 or 1967 who shall remain unnamed. He got the bright idea of pouring about 2 gallons of gasoline across all four lanes of Colfax Ave. on a Friday night. Then he torched it up. I will guarantee that wall of fire stopped traffic in both directions. The Denver cops looked hard but never found the culprits. :D
Second was another friend was arrested for solicitation of a prostitute on Colfax. He had to call his wife to bail him out. Hilarious! The marriage didn't make it, needless to say.

Ah, the Satire. I had many a good meal there.
One time we walked out of the Satire at about 2100 and a motorcycle cop was ticketing a guy in the parking lot. Some drunk walked out of the bar, right past the Harley parked behind his car, and proceeded to back out of his space and got high centered on the cops Harley. The cop naturally hauled him out of the car and the guy was so drunk he thought somebody was trying to rob him and tried to throw punches at the cop who had a helmet on. The guy being ticketed got even more pissed off by the delay in the ticketing process, and the cop was so mad he . . . ah well you get the picture.

Can you tell me how much the area has changed. I haven't lived there for 12 years or so. All I remember is Pearl Mack Little League, my school, a shamrock station and a dollar theater that used to be near a King Soopers across Pecos blvd. I guess I also remeber Eliches (SP?) and Water World. Unfortunately you don't learn much about a geographical area until you begin to drive. My parents moved our family to Middletown Ohio after a shooting at Ranum High School. A friend of my sister was shot 5 times and survived. He was in the band and apparently was caught talking with a gang members girlfriend, out of Jealousy he and a few other passengers had their vehicle littered with bullets.

Hey, anybody know where Westminister is? I grew up there as a kid and had to move to Ohio. I went to Skyline elemetary. All I remember is Pecos Blvd and Garcia's. HMMMM, I remember it to be great food.
REP for getting it. One of the best skits of all time.
"Hey, leave me out of this, man!"
"NO! I WILL LEAVE YOU IN!"
"I'll smack you in the mouth, I'm Neil Diamond!"

I'll just chalk it up to the fact that you're an ass and leave it at that. The above comments are completely disingenuous. Don't insult my intelligence.
For the record, that post was supposed to be a knock on Rudy Giuliani.

...and I'm not saying that I'm not an asshole. I kind of am. I still don't respect people who make stupid choices.
OKAY

The Walgreens on Evans near Monaco is the old Rainbow Music Hall. Saw some good shows there.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't the Royal Host burn down a little bit ago? I remember a few New Years (2005?) ago spending the night there on a headfull of drugs after seeing a show at the Fillmore. What a sketchy experience. Crackspoons on the balcony are never a good sign.

Anybody remember the Taco John taco shops? There was one on Colfax and Madison. Denver needs some more driveup taco shops like that. When the only choice late at night for a fast Mexican meal is Taco Bell and Chubby's, that's some paltry choices. Their food sucks. There's a great taco shop near Evans and Federal in the Kmart parking lot.

I remember the Taco John on Main street in Longmont. Good food stop during our Friday and Saturday night "cruising".

I usually take them to McDonald's or something and get them a value meal. You never know, you may be helping Jesus, right?
For some reason, I doubt it...

what no mention of the pussycat theaters on the east side. or the teeners cruising west colfax -right past casas bonita-in the late 70's early 80's? my in laws live just south of the bluebird theater like 15 mins walking distance and i have little fear walking to the local liquor store at night. there are some $.5 Mil and up condos and houses in that area. there are still some scummy parts of colfax but it has been cleaned up a lot since the 80's.
the area around coors field,Lodo, was truly a scary bumville but since coors was built theyre cleared out and it is an awesome place to walk around and hit the bars after a game.

Pretty sure there is still one in Fort Collins, just off College, next to a christian book shop.

I spent many nights playing music at the Lion's Lair, then heading down the street after our gig to eat Suflaki (sp?) at Pete's Kitchen.
Does anyone remember the hooker midget that used to work Colfax? She was an urban legend in the early/mid 90's. Step up service. Nice.

I don't get over to the Pecos area hardly ever. I live more towards Sheridan. I went to Westy.. never heard of the shooting at Ranum. Damn that sucks. I do remember the Shamrock station.. i think it's still there.

I was in a Ft. Collins group called Logjam. Grunge/post punk sorta stuff. We played a couple memorable covers along with the original stuff. "To Sir with Love" by Lulu, and "Shilo" by Neil Diamond.
Great times.
