View Full Version : Will Al Wilson still come back to play in Denver?

Is there a possibility that Al will come back and play for the Broncos for a much smaller contract?
My thinking is that if no other team will clear him to play or simply has no interest in him, will we clear him and ask him to come back? I mean, we cleared him to play through the very last game last year and were aware of his injuries (and it's not like they got any worse since the season ended).
Also, he hasn't said anything to indicate he would rather retire. Everything I have read is that he would still like to play.
So, if he wants to play and no one else wants him, will he sign for a much smaller contract because he still wants to be in the NFL. He has never been a selfish money guy, and we all know his passion for the game, so why wouldn't he?
Maybe I'm just wishful thinking. Thought?

I'd be cool with it as long as he does go with the smaller contract

Last thing I recall Shanny saying was that Wilson was meeting with his own docs to determine whether he thought he could play with acceptable risk. Personally, winning isn't worth taking more of a risk that is just inherently there, and the last time I saw him carted off, it sort of made my stomach queesy, so I hope he retires.

Totally agree on not wanting to see him get hurt. But no one knows more about Wilson's injuries than the the Broncos docs and they let him play through the final game last year. So, what would have changed since then?

For Al's sake, I hope not. I don't think the risk is worth it, but that's for him and his doctors to decide.

good lord people, the guy is done, can't make it more clear. He is broken, its not a football issue, its black and white. He can't play anymore, one wrong hit and he could be in a wheelchair numb from the neck or chest down. If there was anyway he could play he would have been cleared and signed by now!!!
Some bronco fans need to face facts, its over for #56

I heard the same thing about Lynch.
Odds are good he is done, but its not a given.

NO KIDDING!!!! Also, what about DJ WILLIAMS!!! Hes our MLB now. Where would Al play? Sorry his old position has been filled. PERIOD.
Why would the Broncos want a guy back who cant play due to injuries which would most likely lead to all kinds of legal issues for the team if/when he gets injured again as well as the fact that his position has been filled by a younger, talented more athletic player.
It sucks that Al isnt with the Broncos, i liked the guy as much as the next fan, could we move on now?

Won't happen unless DJ bombs at MLB. On D, mucking with your MLB is like mucking with the QB on offense. There needs to be a clear decision that management sticks with. Bringing AW back in would muddy that water.

Al Wilson was a probowler last year playing with the same injuries, so that is some pretty high praise for DJ who has yet to play the position in a game.
Honestly, I'm not trying to get the guy hurt, but he had a great year playing all year with those injuries and the Broncos' medical staff cleared him to do so.
I am not a doctor, so I don't know what the ramifications of him going out there to play would be, but, like I said, IF our doctor's clear him, what then? And why wouldn't they if they cleared him with the same injuries before.

DJ Williams is a more talently athletic player. Thats not knocking Al Wilson. What is yet to be determined is whether DJ will be a great leader, have the proper instincts, make the right reads to hit the gaps from the MLB position. That is what took Al Wilson to the Pro Bowl.
The worst thing that Coyer did was move DJ williams over to the other side last year. I really think DJ will excel but I have been wrong. If Al wanted to coach that would be awesome, get him signed as an assistant! Mentor DJ in the position. But I doubt he wants to do that.

Yep. that IS pretty high praise! I for 1 am not worried about the MLB position with DJ there. He is younger than Al, he is talented, and he is MORE athletic than Al! Like you said Al was injured, which would mean that alot of guys are/were more athletic than him. Not knocking Al, i think its flat out amazing that he was even considered for the Pro Bowl with all the injury issues, but
the faster everyone moves on, the better off DJ will be.
I can see this becoming one of those endless Plummer/Cutler posts that never go away.
Man, this team has gone through some serious changes!!

NO. Even if Al gets clearance to play again, he has to much pride to come back to Denver.

It’s not gonna’ happen in 2007.
Even if he will get a medical clearness to play the NFL (or the NFLPA) will prevent him joining the Broncos for reduced salary.
You can’t cut a player only to sign him few months later to a lesser contract.
The earliest he can play back in Denver will be 2008.

So can he sign for the same contract and take a pay cut?

Sorry don’t have one.
But I’m certain it is true.
Here is Jeff Legwold from Rocky Mountain News ‘Broncos inbox (http://blogs.rockymountainnews.com/denver/broncos/archives/2007/05/whats_the_diffe.html)’ answering the same question. Take it for what’s worth:
Q: What are the chances of Denver bringing back Al Wilson if he is not picked up by a other team?
A: First, Wilson has to be confident that medically he can return to the field. He's getting opinions from doctors about his neck and hasn't yet made a decision.
He has seen renowned neck and spine specialist Dr. Robert Watkins in Los Angeles, and as of now, Watkins hasn't cleared Wilson to play.
As far as returning to the Broncos, Wilson and the team have agreed to part ways. The Broncos want to play D.J. Williams at middle linebacker and even if Wilson had returned this season it was expected he was going to lose some playing time on third down anyway.
The Broncos were already looking to play Williams and Ian Gold as the two linebackers in the nickel before Wilson's medical issues surfaced.
There are some rumblings that the Giants would be interested in Wilson. But they would have a hard time explaining that to the league, having already flunked Wilson on a physical.
To sign him later, at a lower price after potentially medically clearing him, would be hard to explain to the league and could result in potential punishment for any team that did it.
That’s it, and thanks for all of the questions this season. We'll be back just before training camp.

If he returns to the game -- which he should not -- he'll be a Raider.

You are misinterpreting that quote. The reason it would look fishy in THIS CASE is because the Giants nixed a trade for him. If they later signed him after claiming he was not trade worthy, it would seem like they were trying to circumvent giving compensation. I'm fairly certain that Denver can cut a guy and sign him back to a smaller contract. I think this is regular practice in the NFL actually.

Anyone know how John Mobley is doing?
Would be nice to replace Gold with Mobley.

Jeez you guys are quick to forget about a guy who was one of the top two middle LBs just this past season all while playing with the injury. If DJ Williams is a probowler this year then I'll eat my words, but that's a tall order.

Im pretty high on DJ, He has the tools to be one of the best in the league. Im just hoping that the defensive line holds their own and can take up space and create more room for DJ to roam around and make plays.

as for eating up guys for DJ to make plays please bring in Sam Adams and allow Marcus Thomas to develop. Dont rush Thomas to the field and then call for his head

Only way Wilson comes back to the Broncos is as a coach.
Turn the page.
