WASHINGTON (Reuters) -- U.S. health officials are beginning to check all shipments of toothpaste coming from China, following reports of tainted products in other countries, a government spokesman said Wednesday.

The Food and Drug Administration has no evidence that contaminated toothpaste has made its way into the United States but is taking the step as a precaution, agency spokesman Doug Arbesfeld said.

China is the second-largest exporter of toothpaste to the United States behind Canada, according to the FDA.

The FDA's action comes after the lethal chemical diethylene glycol was found in toothpaste sold in the Dominican Republic and Panama.

Wow. You mean buying products from a country where corruption is rampant and the govt doesnt care about their own people (much less us) could lead to this??? Who woulda thought that??? China is going for an average of a recall a month.

I got a friend that works for State Dept and used to live in China. He told me that the biggest threat to babies/toddlers in China is that so many of the formulas sold in the markets in China - and of course made in China - were made with garbage filler with no nutritional value. The kids slowly die of malnutrion.

Just wait til you buy a car made in China... it will be advertised to have a 4 cylinder, 250 hp engine... only to find its a shell covering a 3 HP riding lawn mower engine. That'll be great. But, on the other hand, maybe it will lead to a return of buying good ole "made in the USA."
