Marketing Drugs to Kids: From Cheese to Strawberry Quick (http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,271215,00.html)

By Maggie Lineback

DALLAS, Texas — Something called “cheese” is killing kids. In August of 2005, no one had even heard of it — so much so, that when a school district police officer first saw a bag of this drug, he thought it was fake. Now officials realize cheese is all too real; at least 21 kids have died from overdosing on it.

Cheese is a combination of black tar heroin and crushed up Tylenol PM tablets and hits of it sell for a buck or two. Like any type of heroin, cheese is highly addictive and deadly. If that’s not enough to scare you, there’s this: drug pushers cooked it up special for kids.

“Traditionally heroin is going to be an adult user drug,” says Dallas Independent School District Officer Jeremy Liebbe. “Black tar heroin is cooked on a spoon, mixed with liquid and injected. Meaning needles. Not many kids are wild about needles, so if you want to market heroin to kids you've got to come up with an alternative to it.”

And that’s exactly what drug dealers in the Dallas area have done — they’ve come up with a form that can be snorted and gave it a seemingly benign name: “cheese.” But cheese is just the start. Have you heard of “Strawberry Quick?” It’s not a kid’s drink — it’s a kid’s methamphetamine. Drug dealers mix meth with Kool-Aid in an attempt to make it look and taste better. And again, there’s the snappy name. While Strawberry Quick hasn’t made a big splash in Dallas, it is gaining ground in other parts of the country.

The DEA says the whole act of marketing drugs to kids is a dangerous and relatively new trend. “They're looking for a new consumer, ” says James Capra, the Special Agent In Charge of the DEA office in Dallas. “They've taken the tactic that advertising people have taken for years; you want to sell a product, you’ve got do a good marketing approach to it.”

The anecdote for any slick marketing campaign is the truth. Cheese users, if they live, eventually escalate to needle use. And if they try to get off cheese, users have horrible physical and mental withdrawal symptoms. So of course it’s best never to start. As for meth, anyone who’s seen a meth addict, with their scabbed skin and rotting teeth, knows what a con “Strawberry Quick” is.

What can you do? Fernando Cortez is getting involved. He lost his 15-year-old son to cheese earlier this year. Cortez swears his son wasn’t a user and is haunted by what-ifs. What if he had done this versus that? Would his son still be alive? In the end, Cortez has had to put away those thoughts and channel his grief into something that could save lives. He goes to Dallas schools, speaking out about his painful experience and giving out his cell phone number to anyone who needs to talk. He urges parents to do the same — talk to their kids.

Drug experts add this advice: don’t bury your head in the sand. If your child’s grades drop, he loses interest in the activities he once loved, if he changes friends, if he starts to have trouble at school … all of these are warning signs that need to be acted upon immediately. With drug dealers stepping up their efforts to target your kids, police and drug counselors say we should all make as much of an effort to keep them safe.

Addicts are hooked in their teens more often than not. If it's not heroin, its alcohol or another easy-to-get drug.

Some of our worst habits are formed when we are still growing and it is much more difficult undo them as an adult. At least we know so parents and community members can take steps to stop it.

I've screamed to my son about that crap...he's on meth alley. I got on my knees, I'm dead serious. Tears in my eyes.

I begged him not to smoke but when he visited he only had three in three days to my knowledge. I got quite mad but WTF can you do? Beg I guess.

I remember asking if he smoked and then it patten him down. Viola. What can you do? I can't beat him, he's a young man and would kick my ass honestly if he wanted to. heh.

He knows I am just concerned about his welfare and health. He has to make his own decisions. I hate he's in Meth Alley tho.

The Mexican drug cartels have declared war on the government of Mexico. They're the ones behind this crap. They are now in control of smuggling illegals across our border to cover their drug shipments. They are decapitating their opponents in Mexico and leaving little sticky note threats stuck to the heads. If you try to prosecute them, they machine gun your family. But we don't need to put troops on the border. Nope. We need more time to discuss comprehensive legislation.

Best thing to do is show him a photo of him before he did meth than show him what he looks like now. It is amazing what incarcerated photo shots of a meth user shows over a two year period. You will never get back those brain cells. I am so glad i was into sports growing up. I didnt start partying until my senior year. Junior year was just a small dose, but i would rather go to an Angels game on a Friday night than to a party. Mock, if your son had a dog growing up, i bet this wouldnt have happened.

OK, how about a real story about a meth problem? When I was in the Navy I had some friends who were all into meth.

Derek. OS. He stayed up for about a week. First he tried to sell me on a scheme where I would smuggle the stuff onto the ship for him and he would pay me in meth. A few days later he was convinced that the Navy had come up with a cloaking device (like the Romulans) and they were using it to hide a small anti-personnel sattelite to follow him around. He could tell because he was seeing blurs at the corners of his vision. The last I heard of him was when he went insane. He was sent to a military psychiatric hospital.

Eric. HT. He got caught shooting it up. Twice. The first time he got busted down from E-4 to E-1. The second time he got kicked out. The last time I saw him he was living with a crack whore in San Diego, thinking he was living the high life.

John. BT. He lost his wallet on the ship. MAA found it, full of paraphenalia. He told then that he had a problem and they kicked him out. The last time I saw him was in a hotel room we rented weekly so he'd have a place to stay. His brother came and got him while I was on duty.

I guess I should mention that the senior MAA who ran the piss tests was the biggest dealer on board. If you bought stuff from him you wouldn't get popped. I later found out that that was why I was tested every month while I was onboard. He knew I was clean so my name always appeared on the lists for the "random" drug tests.

You guys should be very worried about cheese if you have kids. Only a matter of time before it starts to spread.

2005 is a very conservative figure. I've had kids tell me they've been using for 4 years, which pushes the dates back to 2003. Most of these kids buy 3-5 bucks worth a day - lunch money. Then they divide it into a few hits that keep them going throughout the school day. Its almost exclusively bought and sold in schools by other kids. Best thing about it is that on a heroin high you don't have an appetite, so no other need for the lunch money.

I've seen a lot of the "cheese heads," including one that died. Fortunately I wasn't working most of the days those other ones came in. Many of the kids are brought in from juvie to treat their heroin withdrawal. They're surprisingly honest about it, but most don't realize it could kill them. Youngest one I've seen so far was 13, but I know others have seen plenty of middle school aged children on the stuff.

I'm all for kids on Meth if it keeps them off the streets. That's the problem with today's youth, they have no hobbies.

Strawberry meth didn't take long to arrive in the Ozarks

WILLARD, Mo. -- A new twist to an old drug may make it more appealing to children. It's called strawberry quick -- strawberry flavoring added to methamphetamine to make it taste more like candy -- and it's already made its appearance in the Ozarks.

The first sighting of strawberry quick was in Willard, not too far from the town's debris dumpsite. It's strawberry flavored and it could be the first of a new trend. It's causing a major buzz with law officers and community groups.

It looks like rock candy, the kind someone might buy as a treat, but there's nothing sweet about these crystals.

"It has a more user-friendly appearance, if you will,” said Capt. Randy Gibson of the Greene County Sheriff’s Department.

Strawberry quick is basically meth with pink coloring and strawberry flavoring to remove the bitter taste of just plain meth. It showed up on the west coast in mid-February and, in almost no time, wound up here.

“It was almost overnight,” said Gibson.

Greene County officers recently pulled over a car for a traffic violation and found about two grams of it in a seat. So far, detectives think it’s the only case in this area but that doesn't stop community leaders from worrying about the drug's impact on kids.

"When it's put in that kind of format, people often think it's less hazardous,” said Melissa Haddow, executive director of Community Partnership of the Ozarks. "This may appeal to kids that meth or crystal would not appeal to.”

Haddow compares it to how kids think of alcohol. Many see hard liquor, like gin, as dangerous but, at the same time, see drinks like wine coolers as safe.

"I don't know if it's deliberately targeted to kids but certainly it's going to be more palatable for kids,” said Gibson.

"I don't think it is huge right now in the Ozarks at all,” said Haddow, “but we don't want to glamorize it, that's for sure."

The Community Partnership is sending out surveys to area schools to get an idea of how bad meth is among students and to see how much they know, if anything, about strawberry quick.

Are you kidding? Mock's drunken posts were a thing of beauty. I suggest, when it is convenient, but as soon as is possible, that all of us familiar with him get drunk and stupid and post on the Mane in his honor. I've got vodka, rum and brandy at the house currently. I will be at the least downing some in his memory.

as much as many want him to RIP, this thread is classic mock and how he was nuts and somewhat of a jerk. He was full of enjoyment but no way I take back anything I said. Only thing that people should be ashamed of is stating that they wished that he go eat more PB and die. Seems that was the cause of his death.

Paraphrasing Bronco Buff, "He was a jerk. But he was our jerk." Lovable Mock or outright hated him, he was a fixture at the Mane.

Also, I hope the man rests in peace. I really do. But the guy was an asshole a lot of the time, and I'm not going to pretend that he was the greatest living American or something just because he's passed on.

Rest in Peace, Mock, you drunken idiot.

I don't think anyone is. I just think they are saying they are sad he will be missed and are focusing on the funny part.

And you were here for the latter part of Mock. I came in the middle and yes he could be a jerk but he was still our jerk. So why not just leave it at that.

He had more than 77,000 posts on the Mane. Despite the fact that he was given at least a couple of timeouts for bad behavior.

Only Spider had more.

And I think that a bunch of posts were lost in one of the changeovers, so he probably had closer to 80,000.

I remember Mock before the PB incident. He was honestly like an idiot savant. He would say something totally ridiculous but sprinkle in honest truth out of nowhere in the middle of a rant.

The later Mock was a mere shadow of his former self.

RIP dude.

That was what was so fascinating about the guy. He was clearly very intelligent at one point, and held a vast knowledge on many subjects... but it was all so diluted by venom and whatever he was doing to himself... it came out as the most bizarre stuff you've ever read.

He'd start ripping me for something football related, and by the end of the post... he would have talked about his farm, his cat, and the Roman Empire.

The fruits of the war on drugs...
