Sorry to say, there hasn't been a television produced in the United States for a long time. The last one was Curtis Mathis. The RCA may be assembled in the United States, but that is highly doubtful.

My 65" Mitsu diamond vision from 99 is still truckin...No problems, although I can tell the CRTs are starting to show a little age now. Not burn in just warm up brightness. But Mitsu's USED to be VERY good sets...the lower priced models no longer can make that claim.

I would definitely stay away from RCA, though if you want to avoid foreign manufacturing. In fact I don't think you can find a set made here anymore.
The Zeniths are made by LG, and in fact virtually every Plasma display is made either by LG, Sony or Panasonic. The other manufacturers use one or the other in their sets. Not sure about Large LCDS, but its probably the same.

I would not buy another rear projector set, now that large plasma and LCD sets are becoming common. Just make sure that whatever you get is 1080P and Not just 1080I, and has at least 2 HDMI inputs, plus a bulit in QAM /ATSC tuner, preferably with cable card slot also.

Check out Costco.....

Hixon Impressive - Domenik Hixon is starting to turn heads in his first full action with the Broncos. Hixon, the 4th round pick in the 2006 draft, missed the entire 2006 season recovering from a foot injury he suffered getting ready for the draft(like I said, they can be tricky). Now that Hixon is completely healed and able to go full speed some guys are taking notice, most notably Champ Bailey --

"You can't really grade the guy too much from practice," Bailey said. "But from what I see, the guy . . . runs great routes. He's fast. He's an unbelievable talent. . . . Other than Brandon and Javon (Walker, both current starters), who are going to stand out, he's that guy where you say, 'Dang, this guy's good.' "

That's why Bailey preferred to discuss Hixon in terms of potential contributions at receiver instead of on special teams, where the 6-foot-2, 185-pounder has a legitimate shot at being a dual threat in the return game.

"The guy could probably start for this team. He's got that kind of talent," Bailey said. "Now you've got to translate that to games, and that can make a difference. But he has that ability."

Of course, practice is just practice, ask Allen Iverson, but having watched Hixon throughout his college career the guy is just a freakish athlete. He was a solid defender his first two years at Akron before being moved to WR, and despite having no experience at the position became an all-conference player.

Found this at MHR - wanted to put it up here becuase there were a few guys who were giving me $hit about why I thought Hixon deserved playing time with the 1st team come this preseason. Looks like I'm not the only one who thinks so........HA! He is impressing Bailey and that's not an easy thing to do. You watch, I know guys love Rod and I do to but this kid is gonna be a big time deep threat as #3 WR and he's gonna get on the field more then Rod, I just have a feeling about it.

We read articles like this one every year... and most of the time, those guys aren't even on the team by the next season. (I remember reading this kind of article about Watts, of course... and guys like Ahmad Galloway)

We'll have to see, I guess. I'd love it if he pans out, we could have a monster trio with Marshall, Walker and him.

I know there are always guys who impress here and there but if Champ Bailey is saying the guy looks "unbelievable" to him (and champ goes against the best there is every week) then we should at least take notice. Of course he's got to pan out and do it in games but at this stage, at least there is somebody in camp as a #3 guy who is impressing rather then squandering. Since he was hurt all last year, it's almost like getting that extra pick in the 4th round that we had to give up. Kinda nice.

I have a General Electric tv in my bedroom that I bought in 1979 - that's during the Jimmy Carter Administration, folks. And it still works. The color and contrast are a little shaky and the volume fluctuates between normal and VERY LOUD but I can't complain about a set that still has life after 25+ years.

The living room tv I've replaced three times since the time I bought that one.

There were actually only two original posts about Hixon. The admin (and he knows who he is) is changing the title of the topics to have Hixon on them, and then of course then following reaction like your post and now this thing is snowballing. For the love of god, there were only 2 fuc_in orginal Hixon posts and each had something different. I wonder how many Cutler or Bailey or Wilson threads there have been lately. God I can't wait till the season starts so the admins have something better to do with their time then rename a bunch of posts of mock people. I don't know any other forum where admins go out of their way to try and make some members look bad. Wow.

Okay...
there are two ways to go when considering new tv's (or any consumer product).

1. You want quality and think that paying more for a product if it is made by a NAME you respect and trust will be worth it.

2.. You want to get the features you value at the best price you can get, and brand name means nothing, if you can get something for less.

Complicating the TV scenario are laws that are soon to be in effect , or might be put in effect, Digital Rights management issues that program providers want to make mandatory, and other issues such as what type of TV displays are available, and what the drawbacks and benefits are of each type. Furthermore the available technology is constantly changing.
I'll try to cover the issues.

1. The law currently says that ANALOG tv transmissions are to stop in 2009.

What this means is that if the set you buy does not have an ATSC tuner built in, you will not be able to receive "over the air" tv signals (signals you get with an antenna) without buying an additional box to recieve them. Sets that are marked as HDTV READY or Digital MONITOR will not have the tuner built in. A tuner will cost you approximately $200.
Supposedly, all large sets being made since March 07 are required by law to have the ATSC tuners built in. However many stores are still selling sets manufactured before March, and they are supposed to mark them as not having the tuner but are not doing so. Buyer Beware! Note that if you only have satellite or cable they provide the tuner usually.

2. Cable tv. If you have Cable tv the cable company may supply you with their OWN box for premium channels or HDTV. However many new sets have what is known as a cable card slot. This is a card, similar to a card you plug into a laptop computer, but it allows your new TV to recieve premium shows like HBO or other digital channels on the cable system, without needing to use the cable companies box. Having this feature is desirable, although a lot of cable companies still don't use them.

In addition to cable card, the set should have a QAM tuner. What that means is that the cable company may have digital channels that are part of the BASIC cable service. If the set has a QAM tuner you will be able to see the FREE cable digital channels without a cable box OR Cable card.
I believe the "Must carry" laws and conditions that allow cable companies to show all the local channels without paying the stations stipulates they MUST
show them without charging the customer. So, if you have local stations that are in HD they must transmit them on cable for free. I have QAM tuners and receive all the HD channels via cable for free.

3. HDMI inputs. The program manufacturers are scared to death that someone is going to make perfect digital copies of their movies or shows. So they have demanded that new sets must not have the capability of allowing someone to record the data stream of the program. To ensure that they want all HD signals to use an HDMI interface.
Since Older equipment did not have those the TV should have regular (composite ) inputs, s-video inputs, Component (Y,PR,Pb) inputs (first used for DVD's) , possibly DVI inputs ( the FIRST type of copy protected input that was used ..about 4 years ago), and at least 2 or more HDMI inputs. The more the better. Any new HD DVD player or HD Cable box or HD satellite receiver will have to use that connection to send the copy protected signal to the TV for display. If not using HDMI it will only send regular resolution (SD) images to your set (say via component cables) NO future HD without HDMI. If you have older equipment you will also need the older connections to use them.

4. Display types.

a. Rear projectors. Usually the largest sets are this type. Sub types are CRT, LCD , LCOS but all of them require a large mirror box with a translucent screen. The picture seen is projected on the inside of the box.
Advantages:
1.Usually the largest possible picture in a unit without projecting on the wall.
2. Will have the Smoothest image. Scan lines are virtually unable to be seen at all on the newest 1080P sets. More of a film like image . without visible pixel points.
3. CRT type sets will have the blackest blacks and whitest whites of any type of set now made. Widest dynamic range of all sets.
4. Cheapest sets to buy.
Disadvantages:
1. Bright lighting can result in poor images, best in dark rooms only.
2. LCDs require replacement lamps every few years ..100-$300
3. CRT sets can get screen burn in...(results in dark areas of the picture in spots).
4. Viewing angle affects image brightness.
5. screen is subject to damage. Either will be shiny (reflections) or easy to scratch

b. Plasma Sets:
Advantages:
1. Flat ...can hang on wall.
2 Next to CRT sets, plasmas have the best dynamic range (white to black)
and contrast ratios.
Disadvantages.
1. Can get screen burn in. (Not good for games or stationary pictures)
2. Power hungry..even when turned off.
3 smallest sets usually 40-42"". Largest usually 60" (expensive)
4 More expensive than LCD and rear projectors. High pixel count (1080P) Much more expensive
5 Larger pixel groups than LCD. This results in picture having "screen door effect" when close to screen.
6. Can have pixels go bad...show as either black or white spot.

c. LCD/other LCOS flat panels.
Advantages.
1. sizes from 15 to 62" currently common
2. Brightest picture possible, without any screen burn in.
3. 1080P sets now becoming common.
Disavantages.
1. Because they have a backlight, LCD cannot achieve a true black. In a dark room this is very evident. Lowest dynamic range.
2. LCOS currently very expensive
3. Some screen door effect even with 1080P sets.
4. Viewing angle can affect the colors and image.
6. can have pixels go bad...

That about covers the most pertinent facts.

As far as the quality versus feature versus price.

Nothing built today is made to last 15 years. And anything that is built that well will probably be obsolete before it wears out.

I spent 4000 on my tv in 99. Its a great set. But as of 2009 I might not be able to watch HD on it, because the MPAA might stipulate that because I don't have an HDMI interface I won't be able to see it (I might be a pirate you see).

My set can't do 1080P which means HDDVDs will not work , even if I had an HDMI interface. In two year the tuner built into the set (standard cable and OTA ) will become useless..unless cable still sends standard signal.

If I were buying a set today...I would buy the cheapest set that has the features I need (old inputs etc) that also meets my picture standards. It would probably be an 60" LCD but I might go for a 1080P rear projector if it has USER changeable lamps and they aren't real expensive, and it was substantially less in price than an LCD. Then its feature to feature.
I would look for the set to last 5-7 years maximum and try to price accordingly. TV's are disposable objects with limited life.

I would not buy a plasma set, since LCD is coming close to them in image quality and they still use too much power.

There are some other new technologies that are just now coming to consumer sets also. In 5 years this will all be changed again...

In 5 years this will all be changed again...

getting pretty complicated ........

Wow.

ZONA, relax bro. It was kinda funny. There has been a TON of hype thus far with Hixon. I'm not sure how many original threads there were but it seems like I've seen 5 threads with that same video of the winning TD. At this point, all the hype Hixon is receiving he is almost definitely going to get cut (Watts).

I have a JCPenneys 20" inch set in one of the bedrooms...works fine.
Bought it in 1976 for my house in Aurora. Has outlasted 4 living room tvs now. Only has cable tuner up to channel 59, and no video in...
so I have to hook a cheap VCR to it to get cable channels ....

The remote is getting pretty sad too. volume control doesn't work on it and the rubber buttons are gone in few spots.

Depends on how big the set you want is. Transporting it isn't a problem for a trucker is it?

Costco carries a brand called Vizio. I think Circuit city does also.
Costco no longer gives unlimited returns...just 90 days no questions asked..but they also give you a free 2 years warranty in the price.
Of course Wal mart takes returns too I think.

They are lower priced than most and have some pretty nice features. Multiple HDMIs all other inputs, QAM/ATSC tuners and such. They also have SVGA inputs on all their sets...hook your computer up to the tv... . I have a 42 " vizio plasma in my bedroom, and a home theater PC hooked up to it.

They have a 60 inch LCD for about 2400 (guessing), but its only 1366x 768 pixels. They also have a 46" 1080P LCD for 1600 which would be 1920 x 1080 pixels. That's as many as any set goes right now.

I have seen the 46" next to a 46" samsung set (supposedly the best LCDs around right now) that was 800 more...and the vizio kept up just fine.

Check out the audio video science forums (avsforums.com) for info on sets and their issues. Lots of data there on setting them up, etc.

Here's the latest update I found:

Denver CO, AP - Wide Receiver Dominik Hixon has caused new policies to written at Dove Valley. Apparently the sonic booms he creates when he's running go routes has caused headaches to some of the team and staff members. Hixon was asked to spit into the water cooler so that his saliva's natural curative powers could help the ear and headaches.

Then this:

Denver CO, AP - Tight End Tony Scheffler has made a surprise recovery after drinking from the water cooler at Dove Valley. Scheffler is scheduled to return to practice tomorrow morning following final medical clearance.

:sunshine:

Since Penneys just slaps their label on somebody else's TV, I wonder who *really* built it. Mine has no cable tuning and no remote control. I tune through a cable box that is attached to an adapter that connects to the attenna connections and tunes to Channel 3.

But, gotta give props to anyone who still has a working set after 30 years.

Damn Hixon.

In the Mid-American Conference championship game at Detroit's Ford Field, Akron beat Northern Illinois 31-30 on a 36 yard TD pass with just 10 second left. This after an Akron interception with under 2 minutes left made the game seem all but over. Akron's D stopped Northern Illinois three straight times, the Zips were able to stop the clock with their remaining timeouts, and they got the ball back on their own 19 yard line with 1:41 left in the game. The most amazing part of the game winning drive was the player who caught the pass, Domenik Hixon, was sprawled out on the sidelines the entire drive with cramps even Extra Strength Midol couldn't fix (yes, it was a fantastic individual performance Kirk Herbstreit, but a Kirk Gibson comparison? really?). Great ending to a surprisingly exciting game, and it was happening at exactly the same time (roughly 10:57pm) as...

No kidding, the last time I installed it my computer went from super fast to CRAP 2 seconds after the fact.

I can't watch it either, so if someone can make a recap of it that would be great.

BTW, someone should tell A. Mason that Real Player sucks.
