ABC turns to cavemen, modern women, for new lineup
Tue May 15, 2007 12:56PM EDT

...The network even picked up a comedy called "Cavemen," adapted from the Geico commercials as an offbeat commentary on ethnic prejudice from the perspective of three prehistoric guys trying to make their way in the modern world.

Personally I like the commercials but wonder about how much of a show you can get out of this before the gimmick wears off.

I agree, the commercials are classic but it may get too redundant.

Maybe OK for a movie, like how SNL skits can be dragged out for 90 minutes.

I like the commercials and everything, but a whole TV series? I dunno...

(My fav is the caveman at the therapist office. 'It doesnt tell me anything, its a doll!')

Yeah.... I read this in Newsweek. I think it was January when they announced plans to make a TV show. Yeah, it's a gimmick, but it all really depends on how good the show is. I don't see it going TOO far.

Are you kidding? Have you seen what passes as "television" these days? This crap will fit right in. On a side note, I wish Phil Hartman was still alive. I prefer his portrayal of a caveman...:D

Actually, id argue the opposite. Theres a lot of great programming on TV these days, perhaps you just arent paying attention. The **** programs dont last past a few eps.

Meh...my reckoning is that it'll be a one season flop at best. Kudos to them though for being able to parlay that schtick into some sorta payday......as the Great Master once said: "Never give a sucker an even break".

90% of all entertainment is uninspired, regurgitated crap. That ratio might actually be higher in the medium of television. That said, if the show has gifted writers, it could be funny. If the show has lame writers, or, more likely, writers who feel they're too good for the material, it will suck badly.

If I remember its on, I'll watch the first episode with an open mind. I think you could milk a season out of just anachronisms alone. Probably the best thing they could do is focus on developing the characters beyond the obvious fish-out-of-water stage. Who knows if they'll get enough of a run to even try.

Isn't it rather hard to do character develpment on a caveman?

Maybe. Hipster otherwise metro cavemen is enough of a juxtaposition for me to be somewhat interesting. Considering the neuroses already presented I could see a decent run for a season if they can keep it fresh.

I think the cavemen are going to be analogous to an unspecified minority group. If there's three of them, we'll have the guy who stars in all the commercials as the lead and he'll stay true to that character: pissed off at real and perceived slights all around him. This actor has pretty decent comic timing, so he could shine if they give him some sharp dialogue. I imagine his fellow cavemen will be a lot more laid back about things, which will provide a steady stream of conflicts for them to argue about.

I believe there is the potential for some interesting social commentary, as well as comedy, in this premise. I would prefer to see something different, rather than another sit-clone or reality show. I'll give it a chance.

Here is what is rather cool...you can make all kinds of stereotypes masked in the caveman without them complaining. That is, if they really DON'T exist.

Anything that saves us from yet another contrived "reality" show is fine with me. Honestly, I don't even watch network tV.

DAMN...did I miss Bingo night? Who's left on Survivor?

Why isn't Roc Hoover on prime time? BTW, he had so much makup on that he looked 20. Yes, it's Roc not Rock. They need to make his character a closet case. How did he accept that rediculous name? I guess when you posture for ESPN you can pretty much accept embarrasment.

This Caveman angle has potential, but simply punching in old sitcom lines with guys in costume isn't going to cut it.

Will they raid a Homo Sapiens camp for fresh girls?

watermock

If my doubts play out, they will drag out some old sitcom crap and put it on cavemen.

I think that commercial is so good because everyone can relate to how you just kind of zone out when you or on those airport people movers. I'll tell you what I never feel quite myself on escalators, elevators, people movers etc. So while I'm watching that commercial im right there with caveman zoning out on the escalator, then he sees the poster for Geico and I can just picture what it would feel like to be there and be the Caveman. For that reason it makes me laugh. What a great commercial.

Unfrozen Caveman Lawyer is indeed one of the all-time greats, and is done by the late, great Phil Hartman.

Its funny that you guys brought that character up, I was just over at youtube looking for some clips. I couldnt find any.

Phil Hartman was awesome. Maybe I'm easily amused, but his Frankenstein character cracked me up to no end. I can't recall the exact skit, but he was in a Christmas choir. Everyone else singing "Silent Night".... Frankenstein just blurting the occasional "Mehhhhhh!"

You would think being a comedian would be relatively safe.

Then we watch icons like Belushi, Farley, Andy Kaufman, Pryor mentally disbled, Gilda Radner, Terri Garr with MS, I think Marty Feldman is gone, not sure. Young Frankenstein/Old man of Raymond passed. Forget his name.

Hartman was priceless on the Simpsons.
