LYNCHBURG, Va. - The Rev. Ron Godwin, the university's executive vice president, said Falwell, 73, was found unresponsive around 10:45 a.m. and taken to Lynchburg General Hospital. Godwin said he was not sure what caused the collapse, but he said Falwell "has a history of heart challenges."

"I had breakfast with him, and he was fine at breakfast," Godwin said. "He went to his office, I went to mine, and they found him unresponsive."

Godwin said Falwell was receiving emergency care. A hospital spokeswoman said she had "no information to release at this time."

Falwell, a television evangelist who founded the Moral Majority, became the face of the religious right in the 1980s. He later founded the conservative Liberty University and serves as its president.

Falwell survived two serious health scares in early 2005. He was hospitalized for two weeks with what was described as a viral infection, then was hospitalized again a few weeks later after going into respiratory arrest. Later that year, doctors found a 70 percent blockage in an artery, which they opened with stents.

Liberty University's commencement is scheduled for Saturday, with former U.S. House Speaker Newt Gingrich as the featured speaker.

Not that I wish for anyone's death, but getting rid of both of the haters in one day would make a lot of people think (-:

All in all, though, I'm not sure he was a totally negative influence. We are less tolerant than we were in 1975-80 when he came on the scene. However, I rented the movie 16 candles last week. It was PG. My 11 year old wasn't too comfortable. Really PG13 movies today have less overt sexuality.

If Vishnu is going to decide where Jerry ends up, my guess is he goes all the way back to the start of the line of incarnations. What is that, an amoeba?

As a Catholic, I didn't see eye to eye with TONS that Falwell said and did. But to his credit, he thought of Catholics as allies to his cause. He really liked Catholics and we were on the same side in more than a few social battles. I wouldn't go as far as to call him a friend to Catholics. But he wasn't an enemy. On balance, I'm not sure if he did more harm or good.
