Bills release DT Adams, save $3.5M in cap spaceBy John Clayton
ESPN.com
The Bills, who entered Wednesday $2 million under the $92 million salary cap, made their second major cut of the offseason by releasing former Pro Bowl defensive tackle Sam Adams.
Adams, 32, has been in the NFL for 12 seasons and has been with the Bills since 2003. His release saves the Bills $3.5 million of cap room. He was scheduled to make $3.5 million this season in what was his last season with the Bills.
He signed with Buffalo in 2003 and has been a starter most of his three seasons.
New general manager Marv Levy said the defense struggled last season because of the team's inability to keep defensive tackle Pat Williams the year before. Now, the defense grows even weaker in the middle with the release of Adams.
Probably the first of many moves over the next 36 hours.

Bengals released him....seems like a good DT for Bates' scheme.
http://www.kffl.com/article.php/69337/115
CINCINNATI (Ticker) -- The Cincinnati Bengals on Monday released run-stuffing defensive tackle Sam Adams.
The move to release Adams came hours after the Bengals signed defensive tackle Kenderick Allen, who played in two games for Green Bay last season.
A 13-year veteran who takes up plenty of space with his 6-3, 350-pound frame, Adams recorded 14 tackles and two sacks in 16 games in his only season with the Bengals in 2006.
"Releasing Sam is a very difficult decision," Bengals coach Marvin Lewis said. "But the timing is such that it provides Sam the opportunity to obtain a roster spot with another team."
Adams, 33, also has played with Seattle, Baltimore, Oakland and Buffalo in his career, collecting 389 tackles and 44 sacks in 195 games.

We need help at DT. Rookies won't cut it.
We should bring in this guy, and Grady Jackson.
We should have tried harder for Kris Jenkins, too.
Otherwise LT and LJ will have a field day against us. Four times.

Adams wont cost much more than $1-$2m in base salary or thereabouts. At 33 he'll only get a 1-2 year deal if at all.

Can't hurt given our lack of depth.
While getting Thomas certainly helps, our DT's are still the weakest point of our defense depth wise.

IMO Sam Adams > Wilkenson
and dont have to give up a pick for him
Why not?
(I doubt he comes very expensive - 6th NFL team and coming off a 14 tackle season - likely vet minimum or in that ballpark)

If so, might as well use it on a 1 or 2 year deal, no downside.

Wow it's pretty bad when you are cut from the bengals and the bills on the same day.
ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. -- Defensive tackle Sam Adams (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?statsId=2825) was one of three players released by the Buffalo Bills (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/clubhouse?team=buf) on Wednesday in a significant salary-cap purge.
Taking advantage of their newfound depth at defensive tackle to get younger at the position, the Cincinnati Bengals (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/clubhouse?team=cin) on Monday released 13-year veteran Sam Adams (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?statsId=2825), one of the league's top interior run defenders during his career.
im sure there will be interest and i'd be lying if i said i wasnt intrigued, he is a very good run defender in the middle. however my main concern is his injuries...luther eliss?

I was thinking that today when I read that, too. I swear it seems like he's been playing since the 80s.
He's a little bigger than Traylor, if I recall. In their primes, Traylor was probably a little more athletic... Adams was more of a clogger. (Though, both are big dudes.)

Shanny tried hard to get him - I think when he left Baltimore about 4 years ago - but he chose the Raiders instead.
Interesting there's also a thread today talking about how rookie DTs take awhile to adjust. That was true for Ngata and Bunkley last year, so it'll probably be true for Thomas this year. I was for Dan Wilkinson, so I guess since he is a Bates type, I'll be consistent: Sign him for 20 plays a game, if it's an affordable deal.

Sam Adams is a protypical two gap DT. When motivated, he still plays at a high level. I wonder if he is past being motivated though. One thing about him is that he freelances too much and has a big time reputation for being hard to coach.
Personally, I have always liked the guy though as he was the first NFL player I ever worked with at the combine in 1995. Played several old school Madden games with him at the old Holiday Inn Grand Central Station. He told me he was just excited to see his name on Madden and be in the NFL. I was a runner back then before they did the scheduled interview slots like today and my job was to get him to the right interview room as teams called.

He bumped an old thread. People really need to check the date of posts before responding.
If you have new information don't post it in a thread that's over a year old. Personally, old thread bumping is a pet peeve of mine and on most message board's it's considered a form of spam.

I don't know. I'll have to go with The Reverand and Cutthemdown. If Bates bring him in then I'm in but if he doesn't we didn't miss anything. The only question is does Bates come for the money or to be a Denver Bronco? At this late time in his career I wonder what his real value will be. If he isn't pushing anyone in camp then he's just another bad example.

Whilst I'm always optimistic, it would be incredibly naive to just assume that our new DTs will bed in straight away. If he could be got for anything close to the vet minimum then I'm all for it - bit of extra cover whilst the rookies bed in and the prototype for the bates scheme. Only for close to vet min though, and only on a 1-2 year deal.
I know we have McKinley but he's not 100% the Bates prototype.
