Tank Johnson released from jail
May 13, 2007
CHICAGO (AP) -- Bears defensive tackle Tank Johnson was released from jail Sunday after spending two months behind bars for violating parole in a 2005 weapons case.
Wearing a red baseball cap and white T-shirt, Johnson walked out of Cook County Jail smiling broadly. He did not speak to reporters before getting into a sports utility vehicle and leaving.
He was released on good behavior after serving half his four-month sentence. The 25-year-old player is to have a hearing with NFL commissioner Roger Goodell on Wednesday in New York and could face a multigame suspension by the league.
Johnson's jailing in March stemmed from a Dec. 14 police raid on his Gurnee home, where authorities found six unregistered firearms.
Johnson pleaded guilty last month to a misdemeanor weapons charge as part of a deal with prosecutors that kept him from serving more time in jail. He was ordered to serve 45 days, which he was able to serve concurrently with the sentence for violating his probation.
At the time of the December raid, Johnson was on probation in a November 2005 Cook County case. In that case, he pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge stemming from an arrest in which a nightclub valet reported seeing Johnson with a handgun in his SUV.
Johnson's bodyguard, Willie B. Posey, was arrested on felony drug charges after the raid on Johnson's home. Posey was shot and killed two days later during an early morning fight while he and Johnson were at a nightclub in Chicago.
The Bears suspended Johnson for one game for being at the club.

I'm not sure what it means to have unregistered guns, but as long as it doesn't mean stolen, I don't really care. I'm a huge second amendment guy, so I never understood what the bid deal was all about. Can anyone explain to me what possessing unregistered guns means? I do know that just recently higher courts threw out Washington D.C.'s ridiculous gun laws and I believe also New York City's.
Honestly, anyone not a felon should be strongly encouraged to own a gun and encouraged to carry it on his person whenever possible.

Unregistered guns are sold illegally as it is a requirement to register most guns before they change hands. That often means that the gun is hot to begin with. As for handguns, it also means that the cooling off period was not enforced. Most crimes are committed with unregistered guns, likely purchased from the trunk of someone's car or similarly obtained. You usually don't see 7-11's held up with someone's grandpa's antique 6 shooter or deer rifle. I always have a gun in my car (when I'm not at work as I can't have one on base) and one in my nightstand. Just feel more secure that way.

Chris Henry
Arrested 4 times in 14 months on charges ranging from DUI to a weapons charge.
He pled guilty to all 4
Henry previously as suspended 4 games for violation of the NFL's substance abuse policy
Verdict: Suspended 8 games
Adam Jones
Arrested 5 times and questioned by police 10 times since being drafted
Has not been convicted of a crime... yet
Verdict: Suspended 10 games
Based on the above... 6-10 is my guess.

Im pretty sure the deal with Tank was that all the guns were bought legally in Arizona and were registered in Arizona where they were purchased. But they were not registered in Illinois. Which im pretty sure is why he was let off most of the charges. He was also caught with alot of vikoden but then again im sure plenty of NFL players have a decent stockpile of painkillers at home.

I own four guns. I'm just not a tabacco chewing, race car watching, Ted Nuget loving, head for the Hills, NRA card carrying member. The right to bear arms is a fact that isn't going away, but I definately wouldn't mind some stricter gun control laws and backgound checks. Owning a gun should be more of a privialliage for people that have earned it. Not what EARL ton80 said earlier. "His god given right." WTF that means.

Tank Johnson slated for meeting with Goodell
CHICAGO (AP) — Chicago Bears defensive tackle Tank Johnson could become the third player suspended by NFL commissioner Roger Goodell when they meet Wednesday, three days after Johnson was released from jail.
The meeting in New York comes two days before the Bears hold a mandatory mini-camp that Johnson is expected to attend.
Johnson served two months in the Cook County Jail for violating his probation on weapons charges. His detention stemmed from a Dec. 14 police raid on his Gurnee home, where authorities found six unregistered firearms. He already was on probation on an earlier charge.
Goodell has been cracking down on personal conduct off the field. In April, the commissioner suspended Tennessee Titans defensive back Adam "Pacman" Jones for the entire 2007 season and Chris Henry of the Cincinnati Bengals for eight games.
In that case, he pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge stemming from an arrest after a nightclub valet reported seeing Johnson with a handgun in his SUV.

The reason I question Tank's unregistered gun violations was to bring up how wrong it is for the government to track gun owners. The government doesn't just track gun owners, the governement criminalizes them if they fail to register their guns.

In the near future Tank Johnson is supposed to go in front of the Commish to determine if and how much the punishment will be for his recent conviction.
Many are predicting he wont recieve even as much as Chris Henry and certainly wont see the suspension time Pacman Jones recieved.
What is the general concensus of the board as to what the punishment should be for Johnson?
To date there seems to be no formula for figuring suspension times for these players. I get the feel they are just flying by the seat of thier pants on the issue. Do any of you get the same feeling?

He was convicted of having several illegal guns. Why they were illegal I'm not certain. But I do believe that some were not registered. However, I think it was a repeat offense. He's been in trouble before.

He had unregistered fire arms and that was a violation of his parole from another case. So he went to jail for 120 days but it was cut in half for good behavior. He just go released. He also had some issues at a Night Club and one of his body guards caused some rucus. In my opinion he has to be suspended at or above Pacman Jones b/c he has actually been convicted of violating parole and did jail time. Pacman hasn't had any conviction.

I agree based on the ramifications of this suspension. I believe Pacman did some stuff and hung around with some shaddy people but he hasn't been convicted by the court of law. So his suspension is premature and reactionary. Things tend to get out of hand when you operate in a reactionary manner rather than a prevenative or rational manner.

I don't know if it's the same thing he was talking about, but Chicago has a police unit whose sole purpose is recovering any gun that's registration has not been renewed. They basically show up on your doorstep and if you don't surrender the gun immediately they will arrest you.

Are all guns registered with law enforcement? Partial
Illinois: While there is no state requirement that gun owners register specific firearms, it is generally illegal to possess a firearm without a license. But police do not know how many guns are in the state or where they are. The lack of specific registration data makes it more difficult for police to trace guns used in crime, identify illegal gun traffickers or hold gun owners accountable for their weapons. There is no state system to identify and disarm felons who bought guns legally in the past but later committed a crime or otherwise became ineligible to possess their firearms.

No link, I read it in a magazine.

I don't know if it's the same thing he was talking about, but Chicago has a police unit whose sole purpose is recovering any gun that's registration has not been renewed. They basically show up on your doorstep and if you don't surrender the gun immediately they will arrest you.
I'm simply talking about the criminaliztion of possessing unregisterd firearms. Whether the offense requires a fine, jail time, proabation, it doesn't matter to me. It's still a criminal offense that I don't agree with. If Tank Johnson possessed stolen firearms, I definately have a problem with that. The distinction is subtle that I don't expect some to grasp.
I'm anticipating Beerslugs next question to be something along the lines of "How do you know if the guns are stolen if they aren't registered with the government?" My answer is, the serial number is registered with the vendor, maybe insurance companies, or perhaps with the gun manufacturer. I find it simply wrong that the damn government is butting into this.

"The government doesn't just track gun owners, the governement throws them in jail when they fail to register their guns."
Please provide an example, any example of this happening to law abiding citizens, especially in light of Illinois state gun laws....

I edited the post just for you Beerslug. I don't care to do the research since it doesn't matter to me what the penalty is for possessing an unregistered gun. The point i'm making is that it is a criminal act to possess an unregistered gun and I don't like it. The sentence/fine is irrelevant to the point i'm trying to make.
Honestly though, I should know better than to even argue gun issues or political issues on a website that I enjoy visiting to read about Broncos football. I'm getting out of the political discussions hopefully forever.
Cheers Beerslug. We'll talk later on another thread about Broncos football.
