View Full Version : Link to video - Kirk Cameron debates atheists
This is from Nightline and has created somewhat of a stir in popular culture. I won't comment on the debate at this time, except to say that the two atheists do not necessarily represent my views or my debating methods, just as the two Christians are unlikely to exactly represent the views or debating methods of each Christian.
If interested, just be sure to watch the whole thing, from the beginning (I accidentally started it in the middle...):

The atheists' website (referenced at the beginning of debate):

Mark 3:29... (referenced early in the debate by the atheists):

(NIV) But whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will never be forgiven; he is guilty of an eternal sin."

atheists throwing out Bible verses is like Michael Jordan playing baseball.
the fact that Kirk Freakin' Cameron is the best they could find to defend the Theist position should tell you what a farce this was. Still, the guy held his own.

I didn't see any real debate from either side.
Exactly. Neither side is either intellectually viable, nor are they well known for their scientific thought.

I dont know if you are aware of this but Kirk Cameron long ago followed the path of Christianity. Devout Christian. I don't know if that makes him qualified or not, since I refuse to watch stupid debates about FAITH. You either believe or you dont. Debating faith is well, moronic. What I do know is that Cameron is a genuinely decent individual and being a devout believer I am sure he at least knows his stuff. Just because he was an actor in a populare 80s era sitcom doesn't disqualify him. People have a tendency to change in you know, 20 years.
Atheists are so positive that there is no God. Convicted they are about it. They need proof. Yet, ask any atheist thats married to prove that his/her spouse loves them, they cannot. Or prove that love even exists. They cannot. They just know.
People of faith, of any faith, just know. Its what makes atheists and religious people so much alike. They just believe that what they believe is truth. Neither has proof of their claims.
All I know is that those who live their life as if there is no heaven or hell, better hope they are right. Of course, they probably dont believe in hope either...

Did they just accidentally validate evolution?
Hey! It fits monkey's hands AND humans!
Naw, just a co-incidence there! Carry on!

This debate isnt very good. The Christians are not intellectuals, and neither are the atheists. Unfortunately, the atheists show their butts more than the theists (quite arrogant, body language says that they are above the subject matter).
Neither arguments are worthy of your time. You would be better off visiting the debate we have going on in the WRAP section. It's actually better than this gunk.

Did anybody read the "Left Behind" series about the Rapture and the second coming of Christ? They've made 3 movies so far based on that series. Kirk played Buck, one of the main characters in that book series. He is a devout Christian, as Alec pointed out. This isn't Mike Seaver discussing religion. It's an updated version of Kirk Cameron...

Man, 2 out of Comfort's 3 proofs violate his claims by appealing to the Bible alone and faith. Talk about a circular argument. I take back my last statement that these guys held their own. If it weren't for such morons on the atheist side, they'd be toast. The atheists appealed to the ignorant argument of 'who created God', which makes their argument irrational and a strawman.
Peter Kreeft would've owned this debate. A couple of fundamentalist Christians vs. die hard atheists is NOT the way to meaningful debate.

How is the 'who created God' argument in any way irrational? What's irrational are attempts to plug the Judeo-Christian god into gaps of knowledge with zero evidence. Keep in mind that Comfort and Cameron claimed they were going to prove god exists scientifically, so in the context of the debate, 'who created god' was a perfectly reasonable question. Saying, "well, god lives outside of nature" is useless scientifically speaking.
I agree with the rest of your post, though. While certainly interesting, neither side brought intellectual heavyweights to the debate. Get Richard Dawkins and Sam Harris to take on William Dembski and Michael Behe...now, that would be a substantial debate.

Man, it was almost painful listening to Kirk Cameron "critique" evolution. He seems like a nice, well-meaning guy, but it was just sad when he pulled out those transitional fossil "photos" of a half-croc, half duck thinking he was making fun of evolution, when in fact he was demonstrating his woeful ignorance of the theory.

I completely agree. It was cringeworthy when this question was posed toComfort and he said he didn't need to answer that and passed the buck onto Cameron who after a long uncomfortable silence made something up.
Those guys definitely did not prove scientifically that God exists. To make the leap from a creator to that creator being the God of the Bible is a huge assumption.

I think you guys are being to hard on Kirk Cameron , it is called faith for a reason , really do you think that interview / Debate changed anyones mind on either side ?
Kirk believes what he believes ,just like the atheist believe what they believe ....
Kirk presented his argument as good as he could , it is the fake Christians , the Fred Phelps , the Falwels , the Pat Robertsons ,Ted Haggards , Jim Jones , the Bakers , that phony assed PTL club , and their followers I take issue with , not the Christians like Kirk Cameron , guys who try to walk the walk they preach .......... I watched some Christian show on a religion channel once , fake hairdos , 1,000 dollar suits , gold plated Piano , Benny Hinn was on there, I watched this show and not once did a person get up and touch that piano , and I thought how many people would that Piano would have fed ? a gold plated Piano used for just a prop .......then these assholes had the balls to ask me for money ? sell that ****ing piano , those stained glass windows , sell those damn suits , wear something from J.C. Pennys or Montgomery Wards , use that money you get and feed people , then come and ask me for money , I will be happy to give .............. Kirk Cameron doesnt fall in with those type of Christians ..

Ignorance from your point of view , not his ........and since he thinks he is right , he probably doesnt spend alot of time studying evolution ..........In his heart be believes god is the one , so science study after study all reads like poppy cock to him , bunch of eggheads ......... in other words it all reads the same to him . junk science , and the people that have faith will agree with him , those that dont wont , but we all make up our own minds one way or the other

I thought the concept of being an atheist was that they don't believe.
It's like the difference between a pagan, a Christian, and an atheist.
An atheist believes in one less god than a Christian.
