View Full Version : Draft Coincidences ... "Did Anybody Notice?"

Did anybody notice these coincidences?

1. ALL THREE of our AFC West rivals took LSU offensive skill players in the 1st Round. Makes me wonder ... Was LSU's passing game THAT good last year?!2. The Chefs took DT Tank Tyler in the 3rd round. Two things:

If you think Marcus Thomas's 2 dirty drug tests (he's tested clean since), and his blowoff of curfew which got him kicked off the team was bad, Check THIS guy out: "Tank Tyler, DT, N.C. State - He was arrested in 2005 for assaulting a police officer in a nightclub and was also ejected from the Southern Miss game in 2006 for spitting." (http://www.newsday.com/sports/football/ny-spnfl245184583apr24,0,2194924.story?coll=ny-football-headlines)
N.C. State also had three first-round D-Linemen last year (Mario Williams, Manny Lawson and John McCargo). Now add Tank Tyler - a near-first round talent - and you gotta wonder whether NCState's 2005 D-Line was one of the best ever.
3. The points chart says Dallas made out like bandits - ripped off Cleveland - in the Brady Quinn trade. I disagree - I think Cleveland won the deal hands down: Trading next year's #1 to get Quinn this year is merely getting next year's first round pick a year early, and I think that's a bonus. Second, Quinn was by 95% of accounts, a Top 5 pick. So look at the points charts and tell me the points difference between #5 and #22 ... It's even MORE than the Brown's 2nd round slot! (Cleve spent 560 points to get 980 points of value). Just the sheer quirk of so many teams NOT needing a QB in the first round artificialy lowered Quinn's spot. So, Cleveland made out BETTER on the deal on points! PLUS the bonus of getting next year's 1st round pick a year early. The only surprise is how many teams between 2 and 22 (ahem.... Uhh ) skipped Quinn when they could've taken him and leveraged a deal. Whatever happened to "Best Available Player"? Methinks BAP is a bygone relic in this salary cap/free agency era. Teams' windows only open for just so long ... so you gotta draft for need.4. Veal, Dumervil and Engleberger are the only Non-Brownco, Non-Gator D-Linemen we have? Out of 12 guys?

Broncos have their team. Right now they are looking for who wants to start.

5. - SoCal won't like this, but they adopted MY THEORY - if you believe Sundquist. I sketched out a theory in a Pre-Draft Day thread (http://www.orangemane.com/BB/showthread.php?t=55493), that we needed fewer JAGs (just another guy), and more pin-point impact players. I cited the makeup of the 97-98 rosters, and advocated we trade UP to land impact players, and I also pointed out that there were just a handful of roster spots open this year ... maybe 6 or 8, tops.In his post-draft comments, Sundquist said essentially what I had said :thanku: ... that our later round picks would've been fluff - guys who could not make the team. So we traded up and for value. Drafted only 4 guys, traded up for two. All four will make the roster. Then we added just six - just SIX - college free agents - maybe one will make it. So my theory was borne out. This roster is loaded, and there's maybe 6-8 spots open to competition. Right now you could very accurately predict - almost lead-pipe lock - 49 or 50 guys. This is going to be a VERY SPARSE training camp ... 70-75 guys?

You don't have that much leverage when teams know that you already have a quarterback.

You don't have that much leverage when teams know that you already have a quarterback.

And despite the Cowboy's episode of "The Fumble", Romo had a 95 rating. People forget he only came a quarter yard from picking up the first down.

So it's not like Dallas had Tommy Maddox penciled in.

If this is a "transition" team, why not get an extra first for next year in a much stronger draft? Dallas wound up giving a second and 4 spots.

There is no guarantee we could of pulled off the three trades like Dallas did, but they made out like bandit, considering Cleveland will likely have another high pick next year.

What's done is done, but I was screaming to take Quinn in a draft and trade. Just because you have a potential franchise QB, it doesn't mean anything if another team wants him. I'm amused how talking heads act how great the Brownies draft was when they gave up their 08 first rounder. ADD at it's finest. :welcome:

And Veal and Engelberger will have difficulty making the team.

I guess that has something to do with the AFC rivals selecting LSU offensive players. Unless we have to go back to the state Williams was born in to find even a remote connection.

Cowboys won, Cleveland won. It was the ultimate trade for both sides.

Also, I'm still hoping we bring in another OLB FA for more competition...Warrick Holdman, guys? Weak.

I asked Ted if we're looking at Lavar... he lifted his eyebrows and gave me a weak smile... He'd fit the Sam opening nicely, but I still have high hopes for Cameron Vaughn!

I was mostly kidding whenever I asked about him. I just want someone...

I think its interesting to note all the players Oakland, Kansas City and San Diego drafted this year suck copious amounts of diseased rhino schwein.

Essentially, after all was said and done, Dallas dropped back three places, got the guy they wanted in their original spot ANYWAY (Spencer) and picked up what will likely be a high first rounder next year....they did make out like bandits

Fair enough. Your post was before mine anyway... :notworthy

True. It just shows you the points chart is not the final arbiter of value. Circumstances matter.

I thought of yet ANOTHER advantage Cleveland got in the deal - they saved $5 million in cash and cap by paying Quinn a #22 salary instead of a #5 (or higher). That'll buy them one or two more good free agents in the next couple years.

One more thing: I recently made a public vow to become a Browns fan ... something about "empathy" in light of their tragedies of horrific luck, and their fans' signs in Canton saying "We Forgive You John." Problem is, I cannot stand Brady Quinn. He seems a self-absorbed, shallow BMOC ... and I hate those kinda guys.

Anybody wanna absolve me of my vow? Anyone will do. Guys? Little help?

Or whether NCState's 2005 D-Line was one of the most underachieving ever. Four first or near-first choices on one unit alone and the team could barely get to .500.
