Ha it is true. It is certainly a tendency. And those pics really brought that out. I think it is my response to trying to stay away from that natural angle that everyone sees in their lives everyday from their eye level whether you are 5,2 or 6,2. I think a lot is gained from that. A lot of it has to do with the sky. I think the sky puts everything in a shot in perspective most the time. I am actually bringing a small step ladder more places to try and get some more angles.

Hey, what is your flickr ID?

How do you get "that color" in your photos? Is it done in photoshop?

Generally I don't like to tinker in PS too much but the nature of my camera doesn't catch a whole lot of color in its natural form. The pictures come out thinking someone will tinker with them in PS. I generally do some level adjustments or color adjustments...sometime saturation. I really look for texture in the photos that will make the colors pop.

My new love is Adobe Lightroom. LR takes photoshop, strips it down, and builds it up to focus on photographers. Made for photographers. You don't have to be a wild photoshop geek to make things happen. There is a free trial I would give it a ride.

I have so much wildlife down here that I'm thinking about buying an entry level DSLR and start shooting.

Thats great, nature stuff is something I really need to get out and do more.

For your question...the answer is yes and no. No in that on the technical picture editing side there is nothing Lightroom can do that PS can't. But, they make it a lot easier with the interface laying everything out and labeling things in terms that make it more simple to manage your picture taking out a lot of things photographers just don't need.

It is also fantastic for organizing and archiving photos. A great digital copy feature so you can be hands off with your original...sort them by a label system, color system, tagging system, dating system...whatever you want.

It may not be for you but it is worth a try.

Do you capture everything in RAW format and work from it?

Photoshop is a beast. I have mastered it as far as everything I need from it personally but Light room came along and just made things easier.

I personally don't shoot RAW a whole lot bc I tend to go on trips where I need the space for more pictures on my memory card rather than crazy quality pictures but it is something I am going to start doing more now that I am learning how much easier it is to do things with them in post processing.

Just eats up computer processing speed playing with them.

I'm a complete amateur when it comes to taking photos but have been reading a lot of material on it (taking digital photos). We have a lot of artists in and out of this community and some of them travel the world taking photos, then turning them into beautiful giclees (http://www.allpconline.com/). More and more of them every year at the art festival.

I have over a terabyte of harddrive space, 2 GBs of memory and 2.7 processor so I shouldn't have to worry too much about working with big files.

I found this site, http://www.dpreview.com/ and have been visiting it trying to learn things about digital photography.

Raw is the only way of life I know. Try passing off a .jpg to an editor of Outdoor Photographer Mag, or a top tier one, and I'd be laughed right out of the industry. Shooting raw to make sure that I get the best color space is critical. I cant trust the in-camera mechanics to get it right for me all the time, nor can I always carry a grey-card either.

Needless to say, if you have the time to process, .raw is the only way to go.

Sports shooting on the other hand... that's another beast altogether and jpg shooting is more than acceptable, its the norm.

As for space, well, having a 2.4 terrabyte workstation certainly doesnt hurt, nor does having 4 750 gig seagate external harddrives heh.

Yup, I love me some Smugmug Slug. They let me host unlimited photos/bandwidth and let me set my own prices for photos plus give me tons of css customization options, have an incredible support forum www.dgrin.com and some top notch hosting abilities.
The downside - The Pro accounts cost $149 per year. But they have free accounts that allow at least a few extra options as well.

As for using raw, well, if you are getting a Nikon D40x then you will have the ability to shoot raw+jpeg mode (both at the same time).
Compare both side by side and you'll quickly discover the extra range that you can get from fully optimizing your photography using raw.
Just think of it this way... its like going and taking your film into the store to get processed (the jpg way) or to do it in a darkroom yourself (the raw way)

I did some modernization project work for AB at their brewery in Baldwinsville NY. I was fortunate to be invited by one of the Brewmasters to attend a taste test. It was interesting, they tasted the product in various stages of production. They would even have samples of the latest load of whole grains for testing.

The Brewmaster took us out to lunch on several occasions and of course he would / could order a beer. He would describe and inform us of the inconsistencies.

Good work I really enjoyed it but it was demanding. The two free cases of beer each month was a nice bonus.

Walking through the refrigerated hop room was always a pleasant experience. The smell of hops is cleansing.

Yea that's a tough time. Do you use any of that baby oragel or anbesol on his gums? We used that stuff with our son. Also we had teething rings that we would keep in the freezer and he would gnaw on those and it seemed to help.

Hey Pez - I know you are plenty busy right now but when you get some time take a look at this guy's pictures and let us know how he brings out so much depth in his pictures. I was going to buy one or two a couple of years ago, because I find them facinating, but they were a bit pricey and he lives in Great Britain so the financial transaction was going to be complicated.

Thanks

Hey Pez - I know you are plenty busy right now but when you get some time take a look at this guy's pictures and let us know how he brings out so much depth in his pictures. I was going to buy one or two a couple of years ago, because I find them facinating, but they were a bit pricey and he lives in Great Britain so the financial transaction was going to be complicated.

Thanks

They are some beautiful shots. I'm going to send that link to my oldest niece. She loves the mountains like I do.

I am in a strange place with my photography. Things are going well but I am having trouble focusing where I really want to dedicate my work as far as my career goes. I feel like I am shooting at a 100 targets and hitting none. I get a wide range of gigs and do well with them but I can't quite find my niche. I think I am going to get a job on a cruise line as a photographer. It is 1,500 - 1,800 \month which is not a lot of money but you really don't have many expenses...no housing costs, no gas\car (obviously) minimal food costs. Get a ton of experience, work my butt off, see and shoot some nice places, and come back with a legit photog job under my belt that would hopefully look nice to employers or feel good enough about my skills to do the freelancing grind.

This is a mountain just north of the El Alto Airport that serves La Paz, Bolivia. The plain that the airport sits on is over 13,000 feet. I believe this peak is between 20 and 22,000 feet at the top.

This isnt an exceptional work of art, however, I found it amazing that a cop is posted at this light 24/7 to change the light. There is a box with a key in it at about head level near her left shoulder. Taken in Zona Sur, La Paz.

We arrived in the first week of July, 2007 - the middle of winter in La Paz. This was the morning snow fall on the ridge above our hotel. The El Alto airport, approx 2,000 feet above this part of La Paz received about a foot of snow. It was the 2nd of 2 snow falls in La Paz in as many weeks, which the locals found noteworthy. I guess Al Gore's rock concerts against global warming did have an affect afterall.

This is a typical view in any direction in La Paz. There is just about NO flat spots in this city. It simply amazes me that someone built a city here that grew to be about 2 million in size, esp as it is situated above 2 miles in elevation.

I promised my family when we arrived here that if we had a yard, we would get a dog. We ended up with a pair. In honor of the wild west bandits that departed the states when the law got too good for easier pickings in Bolivia, we named them Butch Cassidy and the Sundance kid. Cassidy is the larger black Doberman and Sundance is the smaller Cocker Spaniel. My doberman was abused and is afraid of most things while my Cocker has the heart of a lion. Together, they make a good pair, and the little one gives a good as she gets.

This is a high desert farming community just off the main highway that runs between Cochabamba and Santa Cruz, Bolivia. The farmers use a lot of the land on the slopes, but they dont bother terracing it the way they do in the Far East. This pic was taken at about 12,500 feet. Amazingly, the jungle is merely a few air miles away. The Andes begin a rapid descent and within a 50 mile drive (weaving and wandering back and forth covering a distance of 10 or 15 miles) you are on jungle floor at about 1000 feet above sea level. Simply amazing. If anyone is familiar with the area, this is near the village of Colomi.

This house, the witch house (la casa de la bruja) is located just before you make a final turn and begin the descent into the jungle. Its a 15 minute drive from the place where I took the previous picture, but the weather had changed drastically. Its hard to take pictures in this area as its akin to taking a picture of a cloud in a cloud. The Andes trap in all the moisture of the jungle at this point. As you can see, its should be the 8th wonder of the world... as in I wonder how it stands. I especially like the staircase that comes out of the house on the 2nd-ish level. I do honestly believe that on my first attempt, without plans, I could build a better house. I hear folks squat in it for a while before moving on. I laugh at it cuz it reminds me of the kind of house that would sell for 1/2 million in my home town of Santa Fe - some artsy fartsy fool would think its grand!

This is a herd of Llamas in the Villa Tunari park that sits directly north of Cochabamba, Bolivia. The old guy who had this herd was all about diversity. On this slope just outside the picture, he also had a herd of sheep, a couple of donkeys, and a handful of cattle. He was also shaking his fist at me as I went by. I guess he dont like gringos stirring up his critters.

Thanks bro. We landed in La Paz right at sunrise, so things werent especially clear. However, I do believe that you are actually looking up at that mtn top as you start to make a final descent into El Alto. Its amazing. On the flight from La Paz to Cochabamba, you pass Illimani. Its well above 20,000 feet also. Since its such a short flight (30 minutes, they take your beverage order as they are rolling down the runway) you dont get above that mountain, either. Its odd to me to be flying in an aircraft at altitude and still looking up or at least horizontally at mountains.

No advice. I do have a Powershot S2 IS and I really like it. Takes great pictures and is very fast. I don't even know how to use all the features. The only draw back is size. I am a big guy and it fits nice in my hands. There is just no easy way to carry it when not using it.

Got it at Mike's Camera in Boulder. I know that you will pay more, but they have have all the cameras to hold and look at. The guy who helped me steered me to Cannon. I was looking for a Fuji and really glad I choose Cannon. A friend of a friend brought the Fuji camera I was looking at, it turn out to be junk next to the Cannon.

So what did you get after the S2? I have been thinking about making a move.

If you donīt even know how to use all the features on the S2, I really donīt know why youīd want to make a move. My dad has the S2 also and I think itīs "oversized" (as in too many features) for him and what he does. I use it frequently and I love the camera, but as you said, the size can be really annoying.

I donīt know what you use the camera for, but I assume itīs mainly for pictures of your family, trips etc. so I kinda wonder why you are thinking about making a change ... thatīs unless youīre planning to downgrade and getting a smaller camera.

Well, my case is a bit unique I made a dedication to photography as a career move. Went with a Canon 5D.

But I think the rebel is a great move if you wanna get into DSLR. Remember the lens is where the real investment is if you start moving up.
