Having casually followed this DC escort ring break-up, I keep wondering: Exactly how much is this going to end up costing us taxpayers?

Does anyone here actually think it's worth it? Some people had some sex and got paid. Big f*ing deal.

*sighs*

its a little silly, but I do like leaning nice and hard on dishonesty. keep a populace that reacts nastily towards dishonesty is a good goal. stave off cynicism!

you know, thats a valid concern if you ask me. this investigation is going to cost aloto f money, and when its said and done, the people in trouble will still get their pensions, still get their inflated paychecks, still get all of their legal fees paid for by the US. gawddammit.

I guess that's my point... I just don't care. I'll never understand why prostitution is even illegal.

The whole thing just kind of pisses me off...

I asked the very same question a few threads back and never got any legitmate
reply. And it's only illegal in 49 states, so it's not like there is even a federal
law against it. If two consenting adults want to share body fluids and one gets
some money for it afterwards, why is that anyone else's business?

You don't pay a hooker to have sex with you, you pay her to leave when it's over. :)

I agree with you in part. IMO prostitution should'nt be illegal, but presently IT IS in DC. So, these people have in fact broken the law, and if these people are in the business of "writing" laws, they need to be exposed and charged/ convicted.

Let em get laid. I don't give a toot. I didn't care about Clinton's whitehouse indiscretions I don't care about the sexual habbits of politicians. They are grown men and women who cares. I understand that they should be the best representation of citizens but the fact is they are human and need gratification just like us

Like Garcia said it's a financial arrangement. The government should legalize it, tax the heck out of it, and penalize anyone whose getting it and not paying for it or paying for it and not getting it!

Some poor married guy would end up going to jail for working too hard and not giving his wife any. Some woman who always had an excuse would be bunking with Betty while she sorted things out.

I bet that would end some criminal marriages in this country!

Did they use public funds to pay for the prostitutes, or did they pay for
prostitutes from money out of their own salary? Because if they paid for it
with their own wages, they have just as much right to spend their money
on what-ever they want to as anyone else. Working for the government
doesn't mean you give up your rights as a citizen.

And as their employer, i'm entittled to fire them and question them on their actions.

If prostitution were legal, would you have the right to fire someone,
especially someone in a government job, if they were engaging
in a legal activity on their own time?

Because that was my original question, why is prostitution illegal?

Why not, you can be fired for drinking - and that's legal.

I don't care why prostitution is illegal - i don't use prostitutes - so it doesn't bother me.

Name one government employee who was fired in the last 10 years
for going to a hotel after work and having a drink. I'm not talking
about someone who comes to work plastered, or who comes to
work so hung over they can't do their job.

I'm not a woman. Does that mean I shouldn't care about women being discriminated against?
I'm not Hispanic. Does that mean I shouldn't care about Hispanics being discriminated against?
I'm not gay. Does that mean I shouldn't care about gays being discriminated

I haven't worked a ton of Gov't jobs - but there was a guy whom i worked with at the DoD - we both were contractors - and after it became apperant that he was quite the lush outside of work - his contract was terminated. Due to our positions and clearence - he was deemend expendable.

Hey i'm sorry you like hookers. I won't support the sex industry with so many women being forced to work that role. So maybe by not supporting it - i really do care.

You can make a very compelling case that legalizing it is the best way to deal with that problem. In areas of legalized (read: regulated) prostitution you see a much higher standard for the sex-workers. You also have a much safer environment for everyone thanks to mandatory STD tests and the like.

I'm sorry, but criminalizing prostitution is bad all the way around. It's a limit on the rights of Americans, imposed by a society sqeuamish about anything related to sex... and for what?

How much money do we spend on vice squads every year?
How much money do we spend filtering these people through the legal systems (largely with public defenders)?
What has any of this done but make criminals out of women and criminals out of men who just wanted to get laid?

The whole thing is completely illogical. I'd much rather have all of that legal apparatus go away and instead have our police officers focus on violent crime. I'd much rather have some of that money back in my pocket, or at the very least being put towards a cause that actually benefits society in some meaningful way.

Not gonna happen chief - it's too much money being made - as is - for anyone to do anything about it. Do i personally care if you are using hookers? No not at all - do i think it should be illegal - i'm honestly not sure. Oh and by the way - there are lots of countries where prostitution is legal - and people are still being bought & sold like cattle.

Oh I completely agree.. it's definitely not going to happen (outside of Nevada), but it doesn't change the fact that its wrong:)

Even if Prostitution was legal the use of public funds for that still would not be legal.

If prostitution were legal in the United States there would be a huge surge of women from around the globe as cheap labor will replace expensive. It could get into some interesting debates and questions.

I don't have a preference. I leave social questions to society.
