Bigfoot risks extinction, says Canadian MP

Wednesday May 2, 2007

Bigfoot, the legendary hairy man-like beast said to roam the wildernesses of North America, is not shy, merely so rare it risks extinction and should be protected as an endangered species.

So says Canadian MP Mike Lake who has called for Bigfoot to be protected under Canada's species at risk act, alongside Whooping Cranes, Blue Whales, and Red Mulberry trees.

"The debate over their (Bigfoot's) existence is moot in the circumstance of their tenuous hold on merely existing," reads a petition presented by Lake to parliament in March and due to be discussed next week.

"Therefore, the petitioners request the House of Commons to establish immediate, comprehensive legislation to affect immediate protection of Bigfoot," says the petition signed by almost 500 of Lake's constituents in Edmonton, Alberta.

A similar appeal has been made to the US Congress.

Down through history, there have been numerous, if unsubstantiated sightings of Bigfoot, also known as Sasquatch in North American folklore.

The beast is said to inhabit remote forests, mainly in the US Pacific northwest and western Canada, and many believe it could be related to the equally mythical Yeti said to have found its home in Tibet and Nepal.

While sometimes described as large, hairy bipedal hominoids, Bigfoot are considered by most experts to be a combination of folklore and hoaxes.

But the legend remains strong, and Bigfoot researcher Todd Standing, who was behind the petition, claims to have proof of its existence, and says he fears for its safety.

"When I get species protection for them nationwide, I will make my findings public and I will take this out of the realm of mythology. Bigfoot is real," Standing told Global National television news.

He said he has 12 seconds of video footage of Bigfoot roaming Canada's western Rocky Mountains included in a 30-minute documentary, but his detractors say it was staged with actors.

His supporters hail from Canada's westernmost provinces, but Bigfoot sightings have been reported across the country, which is 90 percent uninhabited.

There are currently 516 plant and animal species at risk in Canada, according to Environment Canada. Another 13 species are already extinct.

If I were bigfoot I would shave down my bigfoot hair to a consistent stubble (a la Tom Brady) & sign up for American Idol & rake in the dough. Screw sitting in the woods with nutjobs video taping me & looking at my poo.

Heck if I were Bigfoot - I would find an NFL agent and play DE - maybe for the Broncos? Could you imagine Bigfoot playing DE?!?

Dumbass.

Actually, that's what he's doing.

He says that he's got proof of Bigfoot's existence, but isn't willing to dilvulge it until it has government protection, because of the frenzy to nab a big foot that would ensue after he issued his proof. He doesn't want to reveal his information, only to have every dumbass with a rifle in the woods trying to nail themselves a bigfoot.

There's a big society of bigfoot hunters down here. One group actually hunts them. Another one only shoots adult males - they won't shoot children or females.

Several members of the second party claim to have had clean shots at females multiple times, but did not take them for obvious reasons.

They have a huge cryptozoology convention down here a few times a year. I gotta go to the next one, because I missed the last one and heard all of this crap only via word of mouth.

This is all some major BS. IF this quack ass unknown "naturalist/scientist" could prove one of the greatest mysteries known to man, he sure as hell wouldn't flaunt his this discovery to newspapers across North America without revealing existence of Bigfoot; he would simply come out and become one of the most famous scientist of all time -- the man who proved the existence of big foot. This is not local new, this is WORLDWIDE news. It is quite obvious that he is a media whore/con artist because he is more than willing to discuss bigfoot, yet, he won't prove it. He is taking everyone for a ride, especially the originator of this thread. It's a joke.

Yeah, I heard part of that interview. The one thing I came away with was the idea that, if nothing else, this guy believes with all his worth that he's truly discovered big foot... Hence, when I saw this story, I thought it might be worth a thread...

I think the Bigfoot scenario is plausible. There's enough genuine evidence to point to a possiblity of it being true. I only have reservations on the lack of, say a bigfoot body/bones/etc.

That being said, without understanding how intelligent they maybe, etc - maybe there's some reasoning to that as well.

So for me, this is a possiblity that can be as much true - as it can be false. No evidence either way to support it's existence one way or another.

Ah evidence. You mean like the tens of thousands of fossils collected in our museums?

There is NO record of a Bigfoot bone ever being found. NONE.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bigfoot#Evidence

Skeptics

Mainstream scientists and academics generally "discount the existence of Bigfoot because the evidence supporting belief in the survival of a prehistoric, bipedal, apelike creature of such dimensions is scant".[5]. In addition to the lack of evidence, they cite the fact that while Bigfoot is alleged to live in regions unusual for a large, nonhuman primate, i.e., temperate latitudes in the northern hemisphere, while all other recognized nonhuman apes are found in the tropics, Africa, continental Asia or nearby islands. The great apes have never been found in the fossil record in the Americas, and no Bigfoot bones or bodies have been found to date.

Not to mention it really wouldn't be that hard to get a picture of BigFoot if one existed. For a couple hundred bucks you can set up a Big Game camera in the woods and get a beautiful picture of any critter that moves near the camera for 90 DAYS.

I'm sure there are nut jobs who've spent alot of money chasing the mysterious big foot around. A few hundred grand in equipment and you could plaster hundreds of thousand acres where "BigFoot" supposedly lived and watch the entire area for MONTHS.

Any hunter knows that large animals move on game trails. This would include Bigfoot if one existed. I'd be willing to bet there are plenty of BigFoot believers out there who already have their cameras in place with beautiful pictures of Elk, Deer, bears, skunks, and probably a couple drunk humans getting it on in the woods. Big Brother is always watching. ;D
