View Full Version : Can we give this "I didn't think we needed to move up to 17" crap a rest already?
Absolutely, positively, 100% of anybody on this board has no clue what GM's, coaches and owners were going to do on draft day in regards to where Moss would get picked. I've probably read 100 different posters who said "we didn't have to move up to 17 to get Moss, he would have been there". Well, please, let me know what crystal ball you are looking into, I can get the lotto #'s for next week.
You have no clue if somebody from 17 to 20 would have taken him. Maybe he would have been there and maybe he would not have been. That is the guy the really liked so let's just give this whole thing a rest already.

Mayock said the same thing on NFL network. "He called several teams" and they said they didnt have him on the board...but he didnt call them all, and someone would have probably jumped to 20 to get him if they had a thought Denver was going after him. Also, if Moss becomes a probowl DE, people will say he didnt go soon enough. Same goes for Thomas.

I read on another board that Tenn stated in their press conference that Moss was one of their targets at 19.

Oh, and if you read on in that thread, they were begging their front office to make a deal with the Browns, too. I guess Jeff Fisher & co. are just a bunch of incompetant buffoons, too.
Either that or they didn't get offered that deal in the first place.

For Christ's sake, we are all bronco fans and should be able to agree on one thing: we need Moss to be an impact regardless of where or why he was picked. Only time will tell.
Yeah we can start as soon as you stop starting threads about it.
Threads? As in plural? This is the only thread I started about it and NO, it wasn't stopping, thus my thread. Tune in Jack!

While we're at it, let's forget about our missed opportunity to "rape" the Browns. Only one team was going to get to trade down with them and it turned out to be the Cowboys. Good for them. Now can everybody get over it?

I think most people will, except for bitterdrunk. He'll be moaning about it for at least the next few months.
Rational thought is not his strong suit.

It's not common coaches talk to each other a lot about draft stuff, but don't forget, Shanahan and Titan coach Fisher are the best of friends, so it's possible Shanahan knew how much he liked Moss. We'll never know if the Titans would have taken him or not, but the Broncos targeted a guy they wanted and took no chances. Time will tell if he was the right guy to trade up for or not.
But I'm not upset at all about not trading with the Browns. The Broncos are looking to win now, not worry about a top pick in 2008. Besides, not every top 10 pick pans out, so who is to say the Broncos automatically draft a superstar with that pick.

There's also no guarantee that it'll be a top 10 pick. When the Broncos acquired Washington's future #1, everybody assumed that it'd be a top 10 pick and it ended up being the 22nd pick.
You just never know.

I guarantee Romeo Crennel will be pulling out all the stops this year. Less than eight wins is going to buy him a one way bus ticket out of town.

"Here's how it broke down: Dallas' No. 22 went to Cleveland for No. 36 this year and a first-round pick in 2008. The Cowboys then turned No. 36, plus their own third- and fifth-rounders, to get No. 26 from Philadelphia.
So when all the moving pieces settled into place, Dallas got Cleveland's top choice next year for a third- and fifth-round pick this year.
A few hours later, Jones made another deal with the Browns. The Cowboys sent their second-round pick, No. 53 overall, and a sixth-rounder for Cleveland's third- (No. 67), fourth- and sixth-rounders. They took offensive tackle James Marten of Boston College with No. 67."
There is the reality of it. Dallas wound up going down 4 spots and picking up Cleveland's 08 #1. In the second trade, they raped Cleveland a second time.
Get your facts straight. They didn't give up crap. I'm not saying that all those cards would of fell that way, but they did for Dallas.
Basically, we blew two draft picks on a small trade up and Dallas wound up with two firsts losing what appears to be just a second. I don't know where that pick will be next year, but even at 15 it's a steal.
Buy a vowel. Or two.

It is pretty funny how if they go like 3-13 then Romeo is probably fired and leaves the new coach with no first round pick. Ha!

From the RMN
ETC.: Those who might be inclined to bash the Broncos for moving up to grab the 17th pick, thus losing out on a potential bounty the Dallas Cowboys received at No. 22 from Cleveland (including the Browns' No. 1 next season), are misguided. That potential scenario strayed from the team's predraft plan that identified three players as its target, a group that included Tennessee defensive tackle Justin Harrell, Arkansas defensive end Jamaal Anderson and Moss. And with the first two targeted players gone by pick No. 16, it was incumbent on aggressively moving up to grab a coveted player. But more importantly, there was no assurance Brady Quinn, the Browns' target, would slip to Denver's No. 21 spot, nor was an offer with the Broncos on the table. . . .

Agreed wholeheartedly. Bottom line is, we don't know all the factors playing into the scenario, nor do we get paid to do this sort of thing. They are the ones with the experience to make any sort of draft pick. I liken this to Harry Reid telling Gen. Patreus his "surge" isn't working. Harry Reid, quite simply, wouldn't know an M-16 from a howitzer and couldn't distinguish a battlefield tactic from mole hunting in his back yard. I'll trust the draft prowess of the ones getting paid to do so..dman

Dallas ended up selecting a DE for their eventual first pick. At the time they still had pick 22. I could see the Broncos saying let's go get him now because they may have thought Dallas could make a trade to go get him. Jones has been known to make draft day deals to move up as well. I HIGHLY doubt the teams between 17 and 20 are going to tell Mike frickin Mayock what they were planning to pick. Also, who's to say that they wouldn't have traded down to another team looking to draft a speed rusher?

I think you make a really good point here. And to take it one step further, I will throw in my 2 cents...
As big of fans as we are, we don't know a fraction as much as Denver's front office does. Something was going on that promted Denver to jump up to grab Moss. Obviously, he was one of their top guys remaining on the board, so they made the move. After questioning the Cutler pick last year, I have learned to trust the FO instead of nit-pick every move they make.
We all said that we needed to address the d-line, and we did. There are some other needs out there for this team, but let's see how the mini-camps go as well as the June 1 cuts. There may be another player Denver targets.
I think we can all agree that we want Denver to succeed, so let's support the picks and watch closely as they begin training for the season.
Go Broncos!!
