ST. LOUIS -- The St. Louis Cardinals were informed this morning by the St. Louis Police Department of the tragic death of pitcher Josh Hancock, 29, who was killed in an auto accident on westbound Highway 64/40 within the city limits.
Cardinals' Manager Tony La Russa informed Josh's father of this tragic event. Major League Baseball representatives have also been notified and tonight's 7:05 p.m. game with the Chicago Cubs has been postponed.
The Cardinals and the St. Louis Police Department will make a brief statement to the news media at 3 p.m. CDT in the Busch Stadium interview room.
Hancock, who is single, has been a member of the St. Louis Cardinals since February of 2006 and helped the team to its 10th World Series title last Fall.
The Cardinals ask that all fans join the team in offering their prayers and condolences to Josh Hancock's family on this very sad day for the Cardinals and Major League Baseball.

Deja Vu. Man--my fave football team loses TWO guys to death in the offseason and now my fave baseball team loses another pitcher in the past 5 years...sigh.
RIP, Josh!

Yeah I just posted it in the general baseball thread but this probably does deserve its own thread. Such a young age, it sucks.
Really sucks. I lived in St. Louis and Missouri for a time in college and post college and that city is in love with their baseball team. This is going to hurt them badly.

Strange how back in 2002 the death of another Cardinal pitcher Darryl Kile was also right in the middle of a series vs the Cubs. Tonights game that MLB has postponed was the 3rd and final game of the weekend series and would have been the game of the week on ESPN at 5:30 mountain time. Taking my eyes away from the draft this morning for a few min. I jumped on Cubs.com and read the news. Highway 40 in STL is not a mojor interstae however it is a 4 lane freeway in the city that runs from downtown next to Busch Stadium, and out to west STL county where most of the pro athletes live. Sad news

Sucks, speed/ alcohol all supposedly non-factors in the accident... maybe fatigued driving?

Some idiot stopped a flatbed semi in the left lane on a semi.
If anyone is familiar with the SantaFe/Broadway bridge which is on a curve, I was scooting along in the fast lane and some idiot stopped in the fast land to change a freadin' tire. I mean he had the damn car jacked up!
I didn't even have time to check my mirror. It was kill the guy or just make a bold move. Some people are so incredibly stupid. I don't care if I have to drive on a rim, I'm getting off the road.
Looks like the poor victim was likely decapitated. Even if the truck broke and was stalled and he couldn't get over, He should of immediately putt up reflectors/cones. Maybe it all happened fast and he didn't have time.
OK, I guess the tow truck had it's lights on. That changes things.
That scene must of been gruesome.

It hurts me being a cards fan. Plus all the death this year and with our team can take a while to get over or maybe never. Just take your chance and make it last because it may be your turn or mine to go. RIP

I agree one hundred percent. People just do stupid things on the road, i see people here that break down run out of gas and just stay where they are, push it out of the road and ill even help you. So much can be avoided by just taking action

In that case then its possible he may have been distracted, on his cell, changing a track on his ipod or what not (see Brandy's accident in LA)... either way the resut isn't pretty...
I saw a youtube video of a Fedex driver jackknifing his doubles trying to avoid hitting a cop parked in the left lane... Wound up hitting the police cruiser anyway... The driver appeared distracted there, not seeing the hazard and reacting abruptly- on a wet road to boot. Just a thought???
