I was hoping we would get Weddle this round. Looks like SD is making up for that Craig Davis gaff in the 1st. round.

John Wendling is twice the player that Weddle is, great character, great heart, freakish physical skills.

If it was a gaff then they would have simply traded down but I suspect they didn't want Indy to take him so they picked him at 30.

There's a strong possibility SD will also get a third round compensatory pick once Turner leaves in 2008. I believe they'll get a 4th for losing Edwards.

I like both of the Charger picks but I would have liked to see the Weddle pick first and the Davis pick second (without having to trade up), since the consensus is that Davis would have been there at the end of the 2nd round.
But just like Denver felt the need to trade up to grab Moss, teams make these moves for a reason. He must have had information that led him to believe that either Davis or Weddle would have been there at the end of the second. AJ Smith has been an elite drafter for the past several years so I won't criticize the trade yet.

Wendling certain has Weddle beat in the physical skills department. Othwerise, they're both great character guys with high intelligence and a lot of heart. Plus, Weddle's more polished than Wendling, is more versatile, and can start right away. Wendling would be interesting project for you guys to develop.

Like I just said, Davis probably wouldn't have been there Boltaneer since I think Indy would have picked him. AJ probably felt it was worth the risk to get their receiver now instead of moving down and getting both Weddle and Davis in the second round.
Otherwise I would have love your scenario of getting Weddle in the first and Davis in the second.

Wendle should be able to contribute, but how high is his ceiling. Not very, IMO. He's not strong enough against the run or against the pass to be a big-time player IMO.

I agree. Something must have tipped AJ off to grab Davis that early.
Believe it or not, according to the draft chart, it's still a loss but we didn't come out too bad in this deal.
I don't really mind losing the picks since we have a pretty stacked roster and haven't been losing too many starters and players every year, it's getting harder and harder for some draft picks to make the team. And there's still the possible Turner to the Titans trade looming.

All we REALLY need is speed at the WR spot and help at the safety spot. We got both.
Unlike most other teams we are stacked! The third rounder we gave up was a comp pick for Brees anyway.

Actually, we traded our 3rd round pick (you cannot trade comp picks) but it's not really a big deal since the picks were three apart.
The major holes were filled with these two picks. Now the draft picks need to pan out. The rest of the draft is gravy now.

It was our original third that we gave up since comp picks can't be traded. I'm surprised that there are so many Charger fans complaining about our picks. What few needs we have got addressed with talented players. You can't make all that much noise when you're picking #30. Really all AJ has to do is grab some middle linebacker and receiver depth somewhere and we're set. There aren't even that many roster spots open this year, so trading up for Weddle made sense to me.

I agree on the Weddle trade. I just think that like you said, SD doesn't have that many needs. They should have packaged picks this year to get a few elite players. Craig Davis doesn't fit that category. Weddle would've been a better round 1 pick.
If I was in the shoes of the SD FO I would've made a move up to get Meachem. Philly moved 26, thats where I would've said enough is enough, if Philly, a team clearly in need of a WR, was willing ot trade out and pass on Meachem thats your spot to land him at.
A team at SD's level shouldn't be afraid of selling out a draft to get a few premium talents, especially when holding a 3rd round comp pick that'll help them get depth regardless.

Weddle has all that and finds a way to make the play. I watch the Mountain West and Wendling is very good but I'd take Weddle. He can come in and return immediately also.
