Its about the draft.
So my assumption is, we moved up. Shanny wouldnt have had a press conference to tell people we moved down. I think we traded the next four years picks away to move up to 2.

The only problem I have with the validity of this report is the Willis thing. How would they know that? Why in the world would Shanahan tell anyone who he was targeting, based on what we know about how he does things. I don't doubt the pick swap, but I almost tend to believe that since Willis has been mentioned, there is virtually no chance he's the guy.

If they were trading up with only one guy in mind, the move would not happen until Houston was on the clock and they could be guaranteed that player. Making the move now, they've almost certainly got a list of 2-4 guys at that spot they will be happy with.

Live from the Pre-Draft Press Conference
April 27th, 2007 - 12:01pm by Andrew
Bon giorno from the media room here at Dove Valley, a four-sided enclosure that, for all practical purposes has been my home for the past few days in preparation for the draft. We’re here awaiting the first pre-draft press conference of the Mike Shanahan era, which is also his first presser of any ilk since the season-wrap session back in February.
Today’s session is mandated by the league; every team must now hold a pre-draft session; the Broncos were one of the few teams that did not have a pre-draft media briefing last year.
12:00 P.M. Punctual, as always.
12:01 P.M. Says it’s “sometimes” a little more difficult to move back in the draft than to move up … Also says that even though the team doesn’t pick on day 2 until the sixth round, the pick “isn’t a whole lot different” than the one in the fifth that was dealt to Detroit.
12:02 P.M. When asked whether there’s a chance they’ll move up, Shanahan plays his cards close to the vest, but says that the team “will not move up just to move up.”
12:03 P.M. On middle linebacker: “The opportunity to put D.J. in the middle — we’d like to do that,” he said. Says that the new defensive scheme involves more man-to-man coverage than in the past.
12:04 P.M. Says Williams “fits the middle linebacker mold pretty easily” and that it will be “natural for him to make that transition.” … “I’ll be surprised if he doesn’t step up.”
12:05 P.M. In his first public comments on Al Wilson since the release, says the decision was “tough,” and that he doesn’t know if Wilson will play again. Shanahan declined to go into detail about whether the move was based more on the salary cap, the condition of Wilson’s neck or his performance. “I would never go into detail which one it was,” Shanahan said.
12:07 P.M. On returns, says that Brandon Marshall will have the chance to compete for duties there.
12:08 P.M. Back to the draft; Shanahan says that safety, wide receiver and defensive line are each “deeper than it his been.”
12:09 P.M. MST Says that according to the doctors, Brandon Stokley will be ready by the start of training camp.
12:10 P.M. On Javon Walker: “I don’t know if you ever get over it … But Javon’s been working extremely hard in the offseason program … He’s leading the pack; he’s doing great … He’s looking extremely good right now; his attitude is great and hopefully he keeps on getting better.
12:11 P.M. Need versus best available player in the draft. “I think everybody looks at need first … I think a lot of times people will reach for a guy because of need and it comes back to haunt them. There’s a fine line as to what you want to do.”
12:11 P.M. On Georgia Tech’s Calvin Johnson: “He has all the things you look for … extremely bright … just a class act.”
12:12 P.M. On the offseason so far: Says he thought the team needed to address tight end and running back depth and did so with Daniel Graham and Travis Henry … Says that a veteran backup quarterback was essential … On Montrae Holland: “Here’s a guy that I thought the world of when he was with New Orleans … When he did start (there) I was very impressed. It’s hard to find those guys early in the draft and in the middle rounds.”
12:14 P.M. Says that Alvin McKinley can swing around to both tackle and end, and that defensive tackles Amon Gordon and Antwon Burton fit the new defensive scheme better than they did the one utilized last year.

Seems like they are targeting a group of players and expect at least one to be there at ten (Okoye, Willis, Carriker, Anderson, Landry). Otherwise they wouldn't pull trigger until they knew they one they wanted was there at 10.

I can't hear the press conference so did they give up a 2nd rounder or something else. This is from a Texan fan According to Cold Pizza, the Texans have traded the 10th pick to the Broncos for their 1st, 3rd, and a pick next year.

I agree. Obviously the trend with Denver has been to take someone no one knew they were after.
Start thinking about names NOT associated to Denver interests...
Landry? Its pretty well known we could use help at safety so maybe even this is too obvious? But this would be nice if he fell to #10!
Petersen? I know we signed Henry. But IMO he is a quality veteran stop gap and not a true marquis RB. Shanny has been seeking his #1 guy ever since we let Portis go and may be resigned to the possibility that we cant just throw any rookie or retread in there and expect monster results. Perhaps Henry was insurance that we could fall back on a solid 1,200 yard guy if we couldnt draft an 1,800 yard guy?
(edit: PS - Shanny just reffered to Henry as 'depth' in the press conf - not that it really means anything, but he didnt name him the unquestioned starter either)
The Texans would be so bent if they traded a slot where they could have taken Petersen because they were under the impression Broncos wanted someone else. (willis)
Willis would be great! But yeah, too obvious. And I think thats kind of the point (smokescreen)
Anyway - other names NOT tied to denver in any mock draft or rumor? We know our guy has not been mentioned - thats how its been the last few years so I dont expect it to be any different this year.

This pick will either make or break our defense for the next 5 years IMHO. Let's just make it count for what we've given up to get here. I don't care who it is or what position he plays, let's just see him in the Pro Bowl in 2-3 years OK!!

Actually, Shanahan said "I" have never talked to Houston then went on to say something about having to be careful what he says so he doesn't "get caught in a fib".
Then, when pressed a little bit more and asked something along the lines of 'If you haven't personally talked to Houston then does that mean someone else has?'
Then Shanahan replied, "See, now you guys are catching on".

Thats a good point.
But on the other hand, Texans might not know what may still be available at #10 if the trade is happening so Broncos can parlay #10 into #2...
In that scenario, the Texans would give up #10 before Lions were off the clock - so they would have no idea who could be there if they stayed put.
I doubt that happens (parlay #10 to #2 for Denver), but its been discussed and we know the Broncos had serious interest in that slot.

So far the only credible report we know is true is the one Shanny admited to, that they had a deal on the table for the #2 and Detroit backed out. That tell you volumes about who they want though.
BTW...Jerry Jones has all but flat out admitted he wants Johnson also. Today he was on the radio and said he was interested in makinig two trades to get up high enough to take a reciever in the top 10....that's Johnson.

He's not uber-fast but he has the break the tackle ability. I think a player who can break tackles can be more consistent in the face of bad blocking than a player with blazing speed who could be tripped up by the shoe laces... and we all know Denver can provide the bad blocking...

I somehow think Shanny has secured the #2 spot. Listening closely to him in the press conference he mentioned going after known guys if you know they are going to be All-Pros despite having depth. That reaks of CJ and the #2 slot and he's the only slam dunk All-Pro in this draft at this point. My money says Shanny has the #2 and won't announce in until the Raiduhs take their QB.

The most interesting part of the press conference was how much he talked about the Defensive Tackles and what they currently have as far as personell. People are over looking the size we might have if Burton realy plays at 325 as Shanahan said he can play at, and how he an Gordon fit the scheme better than last years scheme.
Makes me think they are targetting a Tackle :wiggle:
