WTF?!?!?!?!
April 27, 2007
NFL
Speaking to members of the Associated Press Sports Editors in New York yesterday, commissioner Roger Goodell said the NFL is exploring the possibility of staging a Super Bowl outside the United States -- probably in Mexico City, London, or Toronto -- sometime after 2011. He also raised the possibility of adding a 17th game to the schedule and reducing the exhibition season to three games

Who cares where it's played? It's a neutral field.
Now, I don't understand the Toronto and Mexico City sites because they are so close to home, but I have no problem with the big game being played at a historic stadium somewhere in Europe.
That being said, it will never happen unless Goodell is intent on removing Pauly Tags' 'Super Bowls as incentives/rewards to the franchises' ideology.

I don't like this one either..makes no sense to me. I do like the one regular season game that is played outside so I might get a chance to see some real NFL games over here...but the SB..wtf????

Will never happen.
Remember the SB is a corporate event. American corporate executives might not travel to London for a game. And British executives won't really care that much for a SB.

Goodell won't last very long in this league. It's like he's trying to make a name for himself. What's next, five downs for a first instead of four?

Oh yeah becuase its just SOOO easy to get tickets for the superbowl isn't it?? Moving it abroad would make it sooo much harder!!!
Come on guys, honestly what difference will it make to you lot?
Moving it to a foreign city would do fantastic things for the profile of the game worldwide. The NFL may be a successful league, but the sport as a whole is one of the poorest in the world in terms of international recognition.
This is clearly something that the commissioner wants to address, and this is merely one possible idea being floated amongst many others...there will be others so get used to it!

I gotta agree. If it was in Toronto would it be that big of a deal? Coverage on TV is always good and it's not like everyone here goes to the Super Bowl every year. This is no big deal. Neutral field = doesn't matter where it's played.

The big game usually provides a nice source of revenue for the chosen city so from a skewed perspective it kinda seems like outsourcing. As long as it doesn't get out of hand with other countries getting to host the game it's a nice idea, and it coincides with a time that people on stateside not having to stay up until 5 a.m. to start to watch the thing. I also wouldn't mind seeing New Orleans host maybe half the SB games over a 10 year period.

They might as well make it even more difficult for the average fan to attend his teams Ultimate game.
I still wish the team with best record hosts. They do it with Baseball...

The largest group of fans will suddenly find it even more difficult to attend than it already is.
Oh yeah, time difference. Millions upon millions of Americans watch the Super Bowl, even people who aren't football fans watch it. How many millions of Americans would just skip the Super Bowl because it's on at like 3am in the states? It's an American sport and an American league. While I love the idea of spreading the influence of the game around the world this idea just sounds retarded.

Toronto is the only one that makes any bit of sense (which isnt much)
I dont think folks in other countries are prepared to pony up the cash even a bad seat in the Superbowl will demand.
I cant see Mexicans (with their median income??!?) flocking to the box office to secure a pair of superbowl tix at $1200 US each. That money could feed their family for 2 years!
I am sure the Brits wouldnt mind dropping that kind of coin on a game they hardly care about either.
But here - people will refinance their homes to go to the superbowl. Its an unofficial American holiday and we would be pissed if it was taken out of the country
Dumb idea - just dumb

I don't wanna come off as some sort of xenophobe here or anything but I'm getting tired of this trying to internationalize the game thing....maybe I'd be a little more supportive of the idea if the NFL Germany...'scuse me "Europa" wasn't such a bomb outside of the Fatherland.
I'll take the extra game however....what I find funny is that the league seems to be headed for the original premise of the old WFL in the 1970's (20 game schedule, no preseason, international, worldwide teams).

Doesnt the Super bowl give the city that its being held in a economic boost?I remember when it was played in san diego they kept on saying how its helping our businesses.

If they really want to spread football recognition around they should requrie all teams to play at least one game abroad during preseason.I have always enjoyed the SF vs Den in Japan. To bad we dont do that game anymore.

Globalising the NFL means more revenue. That's the bottom line regardless of what the average fan thinks.

Why would anyone watch American football when they can watch a 1-0 slugfest in the real "football"
Home when he got free tickets..."Whoo Hoo"
Five minutes into the game. "BORING!"
They flop worse than the Gramatica brothers. I love how they always are grabbing their knee after flopping then are running just fine. In the NFL, they grab their knee, your scared.

Must be you've never been in the place....because The Skydome is anything but nice.
First off, it only seats 53,000 and change for football. It's a biatch to get in and out of. It's seats are too small for the average guy and the sightlines are terrible for just about everything.
IMHO, Olympic Stadium in Montreal is a better venue than the Skydome and that place is a bona fide disaster.

Ok let me put this in practical situation for you.
Well over the years I've shared plenty stories with plenty of fellow Omaners who made the trek to SB32 or SB33 of which some had tickets and some did not.
If Cutler led us to the Superbowl in 5 years or so and the game was held in Mexico there is no doubt that would limit the amount Broncos fans who would make the road trip or fly into the game.
I've driven across America like many other Broncos fans in here just to see a regular season game. No doubt in my mind that many of you wouldn't do the same to atleast soak in the environment of the SB but travelling in Mexico can be a real pain the ass.
As far as Canada goes that just doesn't make sense either. This is an American football league and the game should be played on our soil. No way I'd drive OF1 up to Canada either. NY-done that. FL-No problem SD-Easy been there done that also.

I don't like it. Football is America's sport it belongs to us and should stay that way. I'm all for more preseason games in foreign lands and maybe even regular season games as long as every team has to play one and nobody loses a home game. A wider international fanbase is a great idea but how about if we let them earn a Super Bowl by actually showing they give a damn about a Super Bowl. Think about it, if the Cricket "World Series" or what ever it's called was played in Denver how many of you would buy tickets or really even care? I wouldn't care enough to even check the final score in the newspaper the next day let alone shill out one thin dime on anything cricket related.
Why don't we let every NFL city host one Superbowl before we start giving it away to other countries. I would much rather see a Superbowl in Buffalo than in Mexico City.

This is the only good point in this thread. If you try and play it in Europe, time becomes a major factor.
Other than that, let them do it. Won't much make a difference. Neutral field wherever.

Moving it out of North America would be a slap in the face of all the fans. Football is an AMERICAN game! The fans HERE are what made it what it is.
While the tickets to the SB are out of the reach of MOST people here it is not totally out of reach, whereas moving it to another country means it can't be driven to, and drives the expense up even more.
When the league starts crapping on its fans it will spell the end of the game !
I could go for the 18-2 regular season. 17 games just makes scheduling even weirder.

In this day in age, money rules all. And that's what "internationalizing" is all about. $$$$$$$$$
Sad, but true.
