I thought it might be fun to make a list of the players I would like to see the Broncos take in the first round while taking into consideration the cost of getting that player.
1-Calvin Johnson- Selecting CJ would be deciding to take the Colts road to the Super Bowl. We would need to use most of this year's draft to get into position to draft Johnson, but the kid has everything you could ever want in a prospect and would be a complete beast with Cutler tossing him the ball. Ridiculous offense is what got us our first two Championships, and I would love to see that kind of production again. It would be a lot of fun to watch, that's for sure.
2-Patrick Willis- We would still have to make a move up in the first round, but the cost would be considerably less than going after Johnson. Willis is a LB who you can build a defense around. Putting Willis in the middle and moving DJ back to Will would be a huge upgrade over our LB corps of recent years, which was as overrated as any unit in the NFL. Gold could take a hike, and we could get a stop gap Sam with Vaughn/Green/or a scrap heap FA like DD Lewis. Willis and DJ (at his true position) would be dynamic and upgrade the defense faster than any other move.
3-Amobi Okoye- This kid has legendary potential. He'll require a move up similar to the one required for Willis. A beast at 19 years old, he still has a ton of room to grow in both size and technique. He's built like a tank, carrying all his weight in his massive legs and backside which will make him impossible to move if he learns proper technique. Okoye would contribute immediately on the DL, but it will take a year or two before he becomes a true impact player.
That ends the list of players I would move up for.
At #21-
1-Reggie Nelson-I can't believe that it's likely now that Nelson will be available. I have a buddy who is a football coach and a huge college football fan, and he said that Nelson is the best player he saw all of last year. He's a play maker who can deliver a death blow, but makes the football a priority, and is always looking for the INT. That's a rare talent in a safety. Nelson would be a significant and immediate upgrade over Ferguson or Brandon.
2-Ted Ginn Jr- If he makes it to #21 you almost have to take him. People will piss and moan about the DL, but Ginn is an elite playmaker, and you can't pass those players up for a need. There won't be a DL on the board at #21 who will have the impact of Ginn. I don't love this pick, but #21 is a dead zone of sorts. There might be a player who slips, like Ginn, but it's just late for the top tier talent and I would rather see us move back if a Ginn isn't there.
