Just kidding. How often does that happen?

Super Blue Chip OT prospect Joe Thomas made news recently when he informed ESPN that he wouldn't being appearing at the live Draft proceedings on Saturday, opting instead to spend the afternoon fishing with his father. (http://www.aolsportsblog.com/2007/04/18/joe-thomas-will-make-roger-goodell-and-salmon-very-unhappy/)

Reactions to this decision were mixed. Some people praised him for having his priorities in order. Others, like Adam Schefter, were less kind. Scheff said he respected the young man's decision, but thought he was making a big mistake. He said shunning Commissioner Goodall's personal invitation was just the wrong message to send. I kind of thought it was humorous to see Scheff licking the boots of his NFL masters like that.

Personally, I like the idea of any modern athlete (especially an offensive lineman) who shuns the limelight, provided the entire idea wasn't calculated for publicity.

Naturally, it was.

Now I'm hearing the NFL Network will have a cameraman in the boat with them! (http://nba-all-star-game.aolsportsblog.com/2007/04/23/nfl-networks-fish-cam-will-show-joe-thomas-on-draft-day/) Gosh, those will be some touching father and son moments, won't they? Televised to a national cable audience and everything.

Its hilarious that ESPN allowed themselves to get scooped like this. Haven't they had fishing shows for the lest two decades at least? I can't believe they would have any objections based on impropriety. The world wide leader indeed.

Watch Joe Thomas launch his very own line of lures on the show.

"Did somebody say 'great tackle'?" Then he holds up some of his lures and winks at the camera.

Teriffic. The draft has long stretches that are dreadfully boring and now they're turning it into Bassmasters. ::)

Last year I was Bass fishing and got hung up and when my lure came free, it stuck in my cheek. All the way in. I had to go to the ER and have it cut out. Wonder if we'll hear tales of a fishing accident as the draft kicks off...

Wonder if we'll hear tales of a fishing accident as the draft kicks off...Wimp, real fishermen know you just use the snatch method (wrap fishing line around the bend in hook, press hook in and down and quickly yank it out) for embedded barbed hook removal so you can continue your fishing trip.

But a question though, did you take the lure off your face (off the hook) before you walked into the ER?

It was in my cheek and I was kinda worried about excessively ripping it so I went in to have it removed. I didn't want any extra scars that would incite the question "What happened to you?" and force me to tell the story.

As for disassembling the lure, it was a mid sized rooster tail in red and white with a golden spinner... I didn't know how to take it apart so I went in with the red and white face jewelery with the spinner dangling, bouncing around and occasionally hitting my tooth when I talked. Needless to say, everyone had a joke for that night and everyone had to come see it while I waited...

"Nice Catch!".... "I've never caught a 200lber before!"... "Are you gonna throw it back?"... or the always creative "You're not supposed to catch yourself"...

That last one never goes away. I went fishing with my Grandpa and great uncle and they said it every time one of us hooked ourselves. I think if you're over the age of sixty five you're bound by law to do certain things, and that comment takes it's place among rustling hair, handing out old candy no one eats, and not pulling your trucker hat completely onto your head.

Unfortunately, I don't. Someone in the ER that night insisted on taking a pic with their camera phone but I never ended up getting the picture. Can't say I'm too awful disappointed though, pictures like that never go away once they surface.

I can't wait for that one! Is there an age at which it becomes acceptable or do you have to wait for the mandatory implementation age before you can wear it at all?

Oh no, Thomas is in trouble since won't be there for a kiss-ass photo op with the commissioner and not there in person so some intelligent reporter or broadcaster can ask him how he feels being drafted, like I'm just dying to know the answer to these such wonderful questions the media mumbles out all the time.

This is just a smart branding move by Thomas. Had he shown up in NYC he's have been the least glamorous top ten pick there. Now he's the likable rebel, the good-guy feel-good-I'm-above-all-that guy. It's a scam. Expect the endorsement contact with Cabela's to be signed at any moment now.

If you would have hooked yourself in the nose instead of the cheek you could have just cut off the spinner and left the hook in....

My father always has those comments ready. Anytime we drive by a cemetery he tells the same joke, it's been said at least 500 times.

Ouch, i was fishing one time in Utah and this kid had a rooster tail embedded into his skull, no joke. He was over head casting and caught himself, unreal.

Oh give me a freaking break. On the most important day of his professional life, Joe Thomas is going to honor a "fishing commitment" instead of showing up to see who is going to make him a millionaire? What?

Integrity? Na, its STUPIDITY.

"Naawwwww, maaaynnn, I ain't gonna show up wearing dem fancy suits on draft saturdeey, boy, i'm goin fishin'. you can't be fishin' just on any ol' day either, no sir ree bob, uh huh, dem fish be a bitin' haaaard on saturday afternoooons, yeaaa boy."

WTF? This SOB couldn't fish on the day BEFORE the draft? Or don't tell me, he has a coon hunting commitment to attend to?

And at least he only has to sit through maybe 5 picks. Think of those guys that have to sit and watch for hours before they hear their name called. I kinda bought into the story originally but since he allowed them to tape him from his boat, I say he's just the same as the next. The idea, I took it, in him being fishing instead of at the draft was to honor this traditional trip. If he's got the cameramen there, don't ya think they'll be updating him every second to get his reaction? He's merely taping his from his boat, they wont be concentrating on fishing.

Alas, a bigger boat ..... sailed that morning for one purpose - to permit the violent, prying eyes of two national television networks to blast images of these quite moments to legions of drooling fanboys - faces stained bright orange with Cheetos dust as they robotically cross off name after name from printed lists of hundreds of 21-year old kids, most of whom only masquerade as college students ... ... and into this teeming sea of vicarious lust they broadcast the most intimate moment between a father and son ... a fishing trip, that by all accounts is a traditional yearly affair dating back to Little Joey's idyllic rural childhood. Some say they never needed bait where they used to go, just a safety pin hooked to a bamboo pole ... take the big ones home, let the little ones go ... far away.

Hahahahaah, how many families in America have NFL draft-day traditions like going fishing DURING the draft? Does that even make sense?

He's going fishing with his old man on Lake Michigan, something he and his father have always done on draft day.

Father: Hey son, you know what Saturday is?

Joe: The NFL draft on ESPN?

Father: Correct! And you know what that means, right?

Joe: We get to see who our favorite team selects?

Father: No, you idiot! It means fishing!! NFL draft day fishing has been a Thomas family tradition since, oh gosh, since...FOREVER!!

Joe: haahahaha, I love you, dad.

Father: I love you too, son.
