More drama in the NBA.
Celtics guard Sebastian Telfair was arrested on a gun possession charge after the car in which he was driving was stopped for going 77 mph in Yonkers, N.Y., early Friday.
Sebastian Telfair
Telfair
Telfair, a 21-year-old Brooklyn native, was charged with second-degree possession of a handgun and driving with a suspended license following the 3:53 a.m. stop on the Yonkers highway, Westchester County police said.
Telfair pleaded not guilty Friday at Yonkers City Court to the charges and bail was set at $7,500. The pair was due back in court May 17.
"The players on the Celtics have been explicitly warned, this year, to obey the team and league gun prohibition as well as state laws. We take this very seriously, and will act accordingly once the facts have been determined,'' Celtics owner Wyc Grousbeck said Friday night.
Celtics director of basketball operations Danny Ainge declined to comment.
Westchester County police spokesman Kieran O'Leary said Telfair was polite and cooperative.
"Our officers said he behaved like a gentlemen," O'Leary said.
Telfair's cousin, New York Knicks point guard Stephon Marbury, showed up to support him hours before he was arraigned, the Daily News reported on its Web site.
According to Westchester police, Telfair was driving his 2006 Range Rover on northbound Bronx River Parkway when it was clocked speeding in a 45-mph zone.
A passenger, Al Eden Fuentes of Queens, was in the car with Telfair when it was stopped on the parkway, about five miles north of Manhattan. Telfair produced a Florida driver's license that had been suspended.
After stopping the Range Rover, the officer found a loaded .45-caliber handgun sticking out from under the front passenger seat, according to the Westchester County spokesman.
Telfair and Fuentes, 28, said they knew nothing about the gun, O'Leary said. Police still were investigating whether the gun was registered.
Police charged Telfair with a misdemeanor count of second-degree aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle and issued summonses charging him with speeding and driving without a license, both violations.
Telfair's brief NBA career has been marred by controversy, starting with his 2005 fine by the Portland Trail Blazers after a loaded gun was found on the team's private jet at Boston's Logan Airport.
The handgun was found in a pillowcase belonging to Telfair as the team plane was being prepared for a flight from Boston to Toronto. Telfair explained to local authorities that the gun belonged to his girlfriend and that he had inadvertently grabbed the wrong bag when leaving for the team's road trip.
In October 2006, Telfair reported a $50,000 chain was snatched off his neck at a Manhattan night club. He was unable to identify the men who stole the chain.
The 6-foot Telfair, a former New York schoolboy hoops legend, averaged 6.1 points and 2.8 assists a game this season for the Celtics.
Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.

Oh wonderful. Hey, let's bash the NBA now.
Yeah, the NBA is full of thugs! Man they need to get ahold of that league!
But Tank Johnson, having a small army's worth of guns, and Pacman Jones, responsible for a man being paralyzed, well you know, those are just single players and are not representative of the whole league!

Oh, it still is a great trade. Thanks to telfair, we have a chance at the number one pick in the draft. A draft, according to experts, that has the two of the six highest rated prospects since 1992. Thank you very much.
You don't want to see it though, do you. You don't. You don't want to see a frontline of Greg Oden, Al Jefferson and Gerald Green for the next 10 years dominating the NBA. You just don't want to see it.
And thanks to Telfair (who along with the expiring contract of Theo Ratliff which was also received in the trade) put the Celtics in a position to dominate the NBA like no other team has since the Bulls of watered-down 90's.
But thanks for reminding me about Telfair, Dr.Fate, I was essentially...RIGHT!!

You know what, the thing about last years draft is that since high schoolers were not allowed for the first time, it was one of the weakest drafts of all time.
The 7th pick -- the pick the Celtics traded away -- is the equivalent of 20th-30th pick in any other NBA draft.
I don't think Danny Ainge is crying himself to sleep at night for passing over Ronnie Brewer, JJ Redick and Hilton Armstrong. Come on now, lets be real, that draft SUCKED.

Now here's ESPN columnist and shameless Boston homer Bill Simmons talking about Telfair about a week ago.

Over the past six months, Telfair's career free-falled to the degree that "AND 1" sent scouts to the last 10 Celtics games.

Simmons is no longer a Celtics fan, he is Clipper season ticket holder. All he does is bash the Celtics now.
He said Gerald Green is the worst player in the league getting at least 15 minutes a game.
He said Tony Allen wouldn't be on another teams roster besides the Celtics
He bashes Doc Rivers constantly.
He takes pot shots at Ainge, the Boston writers, and 3/4ths of the roster all in the name of "fandom." Bull****.
Nobody in Boston claims Simmons anymore since he went ESPN and starting quoting Rocky Balboa every two lines and comparing the NBA to different reality series.
The guy is good at what he does, don't get me wrong, but as far being a relevant NBA journalist? hell no.

As much as I hate to do it, I gotta throw some props to Gonzo and the C's. Al Jefferson is indeed a beast. I had him on my fantasy team this year (waiver wire pick up of the year, easy) and he was just great. If they get Oden, you will have some Twin Towers on your hands out East. They'll be good. And that's not even talking about Pierce.

If you read that article, he also said that your boy Leon Powe will have a long career overseas somewhere.
So anyway, are you saying that he's wrong and Telfair didn't suck out loud this season?

Yea, all Simmons does is take shots at every player (hence the Powe shot) on the Celtics and plays out his agenda to get Doc Rivers fired. He never says anything positive about the Celtics. He even attacks the boston sports writers for some odd reason. the guy is off his rocker.
As far as whether he is right or not? I don't know. Yea, the celtics sucked this season, but we also led the league in games missed by players (312 combined) and had a .500 record with Pierce in the lineup. So are we as bad as Simmons is making us out to be? Hell no, we are not that bad. You take away the top three or four players from any team in the league and play the youngest squad in NBA history and what do you expect?
As far Telfair, he got caught in a numbers crunch and got involved in some off the court activities that are not very becoming of a team leader. He is young, though. If anyone wants to call Sebastian Telfair terrible, then you have to call Shaun Livingston terrible too because they have the same stats and they both came in as high school PGs in the same draft. Everyone knows that PG is the hardest position in the NBA to learn. So I can only imagine how hard it is for a high school PG to learn the position. Remember, Gary Payton and Steve Nash looked like they shouldn't even be in the NBA their first couple of season in the league. --and that was AFTER three or four years in college. So you got to give the guy time. Besides, that same trade gave us Theo Ratliff for Raef Lafrentz which saved the team money and put us as the major player in the trade market because of Ratliff's expiring 12 million dollar deal. You got to look at the whole story.

You make some fair points, but I'm standing by the same diagnosis I made back when the Celtics traded for him, I just don't like Telfair's game. Never have. I think he's probably still years away from being a serviceable NBA point guard and it's going to take a strong coach to reign him in.
Who knows? Maybe he'll be a bit humbled by what he went through this season and start to make strides.

You are probably right about Telfair. But if Rafer Alston, Chucky Atkins, Jacque Vaughn, Jameer Nelson and slew of other undersized PGs can have 10 year careers in the NBA and start for playoff teams, then Sebastian Telfair sure as hell can too. He just has to get his head on straight.
But yea, your initial prognosis about the guy was right.

Less than a week after Sebastian Telfair was arrested on a gun possession charge, the Boston Celtics are severing ties with the guard after one season.
"I wanted to let you know that we have removed Sebastian's nameplate from his locker in Waltham. The facts and circumstances of his case have not been determined but he does not have a Celtics locker and we do not anticipate that he will," Celtics managing partner Wyc Grousbeck wrote in an e-mail to the Boston Globe on Tuesday.
