NFL | G. Adams admits to marijuana use
Wed, 18 Apr 2007 17:03:34 -0700
Nolan Nawrocki, of ProFootballWeekly.com, reports Clemson DE Gaines Adams admitted during his NFL Combine interview that he has used marijuana, according to multiple sources who have watched the interview. " It should scare (teams), especially when you see how laid-back (Adams) is in his play," said one team official. "No one disputes the great physical ability. What is disputed is how passionate he is and how physical he is. Physically, from an athletic standpoint, he has all the tools. He is the No. 1 pass rusher in the draft, and I don't think many people would argue with that."

Nolan Nawrocki, of ProFootballWeekly.com, reports Louisville DT Amobi Okoye admitted during his NFL Combine interview that he has used marijuana, according to multiple sources who have watched the interview. Some teams who are aware of his admission have said they do not think it will affect his draft stock. Others are concerned about his work ethic, maturity level and fluctuations in weight.

Pro Football Weekly reports that three consensus top-ten draft picks -- receiver Calvin Johnson, defensive end Gaines Adams, and defensive tackle Amobi Okoye -- admitted during their scouting combines interviews that they have used marijuana.
Adam Schefter of NFL Network also reports on the Okoye admission. Schefter obtained confirmation from Okoye's agent, Ian Greengross.
We reported on Tuesday that there were multiple players in the top ten who had admitted to smoking pot. The player to whom we were referring in our initial story on the matter was Johnson. We don't have the sufficient legal defense fund, however, to break a story of that ilk.

I'm thinking mock's GF who ran nakid around a pasture picking wildflowers on shrooms. Actually two did. Those were kick ass shrooms. I got parked and we didn't wander from the warm big boulder...it was outside Boulder. 6 hours we tripped like idiots. Then the sun went down and the rock started getting cold. Those were some blue shrooms.
Watching the girls prancing around nakid was quite amusing and we were in tears repeatedly about the stupidest stuff. Noone even notices the girls were running around naked.
Then a doe came up to check on us...I swear she laughed at us. We were all basically vegetables at that time.

I dont think this will have any effect on their draft status. They didn't fail a test, they just said they've done it in the past. They weren't trying to hide it and im sure they spun it in a positive for them about "how they matured" It didnt hurt Luis Castillo's draft status a few years ago when he admitted to using performance enhancers before the combine.

If you admit to smoking pot, but the way you play the game and the way you carry yourself shows everybody that you are 100% focused and determined, then I don't think it hurts you too much. On the other hand, if you admit you smoke pot and the way you play the game and carry yourself shows a laid-back demeanour and a tendency to take plays off and not always be totally focused, then it becomes a concern that could hurt you. I think that's what the issue with Adams is.
The big worry with every draftee is the question of will they realise the hard work and dedication needed to translate college domination into pro domination. I have smoked lots of that stuff in the past and have absolutely no moral issue with it, but i can't say its particularly conducive to getting things done if you want to be at the top of your chosen profession.
NFL GMs are not moralists. They are ruthless realists who would hire a serial killer if he could beat a double-team.
The million-dollar question is, however: would we draft him if he dropped? I suspect that if pot was the reason then Shanny would pass on him also, as he's never seemed too tolerant of those kind of things and has always been pretty politically conservative, however you just can't tell. I'm sure Clarett liked the odd toke (amongst other things) and Shanny still burned a #3 on him......

The way the question is worded doesn't answer the question of whether they were doing it NOW or not...or for that matter in the recent past. If a player smoked pot at 15 and he's 22 I don't see much relevance. If he's willing to jeopardize a multimillion dollar career ala Ricky Bonghead...different matter entirely.
