Anybody heard anything on him yet? Wasn't his hearing supposed to be today.

the pats matched, very easy deal for them since they are 15 million under the cap. Ernster baby and we will probably draft a punter or rookie free agent to compete.

It's not a cap issue, it's the terms of his contract. His contention I believe if that he can't an RFA in a one year contract as a vested veteran.

Let's just see which punter NE cuts and sign him. Biullichick is just being BigDick as usual.

I think he's referring to the the argument by the NFLPA on Todd's behalf that the proper filings to go along with the "first refusal" were not filed correctly. Therefore, Todd should be a free agent. That hearing was supposed to be today.

Yes, the hearing is today....Still waiting...

For those who didn't hear, the NFLPA is fighting the clause in Sauerbrun's contract allowing the Pats to match. I think 99% of us know that, but not everyone....

In addition to Miller and Saurkraut, the Patsies had two punters on the practice squad last year....4 has to be the record for most punters under contract at any given time. Talk about overkill....

NFLPA seemed to think Todd has a very good case to get this quashed. I suppose we'll see later.

Here's the description for one of the guys the Pats hid on the practice squad last year, that I'd be interested in if Todd doesn't get his release:

Malone, 22, was originally signed by the San Francisco 49ers as a rookie free agent on May 5, 2006, and was released on June 29. The 6-foot, 205-pound punter played for the University of Southern California from 2002-05, where he recorded a 44.0-yard career punting average and placed 95 of his 185 career punts inside the 20-yard line. Malone was a two-time semifinalist for the Ray Guy Award - given to the nation’s top punter - and set a school record in 2003 by averaging 49.0 yards per punt.

I don't understand all of the Ernster hate. His net average was on 1.5 yards less than Saurbraun and he was 3rd in the league in touchbacks on kickoffs. If the Broncos had a decent tackling ST his net average would have been better than Saurbraun's. Punters almost always inprove more between their first and second year. Saurbraun made his rep here by making a tackle and causing a fumble. Trouble is it was his bad kick that allowed the return on which he had to make the tackle.

There's not nearly the difference between the two that would appear from most of the comments on the Mane.

you can measure yardage all you want if you dont factor in hangtime, it doesnt matter if he surpassed Saurbraun in yardage. If you look at Ernster first two or three games of the season, when we were waiting on Saur to get back. he looked great, the minute he found out Saurbraun was not coming back he went in the toilet.

His net average was a lot higher than his actual average which would point to good coverage.

He was 27th in the NFL for average.

Compare that to the year before where Sauerbrun was ranked 7th. It was a big drop off.

This goes back to my theory which I put out there a week or two ago about the punting position having the least difference in talent between the very best and the absolute worst. Looking at the numbers from last year, there is really only a 5-6 yard difference in both gross yardage and net yardage between #1 and #32. The problem with Ernster is this: there were only 2 punters last year that had worse gross yardage than him and less than 10 that had worse net yardage than him. That should never happen when at least 8 of your games are played at altitude.

In my opnion, the only way to judge a punter is if he, while backed up deep in his own side of the field, can get the ball past the 50. Sauer was money with those pressure kicks. Ernster was a train wreck.

That doesn't make any sense. If Saurbraun's hangtime was so much greater, his net average would have shown more difference

Not if more of his punts were coming from mid field.....punting stats really need to take the line of scrimmage into account somehow. Technically a punter's stats are hurt by teams that get more first downs but stall out around mid-field as opposed to teams that go three and out all day in their own zone.

Yeah. That really is the most important thing. I wish I could back it up statistically, but Bruns whoops Erstner in that aspect imo.

People are lying to themselves if they think Ernster is even half the punter that Todd is.

Todd saved our ass a few times by flipping the field after we were losing the field possition battle to the opposition.

Ernster gave away games that we were winning the field position battle, that we ended up losing the game because of it.

Put Ernster and JAKE on the same field last year and its a recipe for disaster...

We agree. I think the whole punting thing is overblown. Saurbraun would not have won three additional games for the Broncs last year as someone said in another thread. Thats total BS. I doubt there would have been any difference in the W-L record.

It's legal but they usually keep it behind the pharmacy counter now, and they always assume you're going to make meth with it.

Personally I don't like the feeling the stuff gives me, but it can be useful as a weight loss drug if you combine it with caffeine and L-Carnitine.

When was the last time we had a punter to be feared? I know that may be an oxymoron, but when?

Todd Sauerbrun was cut by the Broncos last October after he served an NFL suspension. (Post file)Todd Sauerbrun is expected to find out soon whether he will remain with New England or be free to sign elsewhere.

That freedom would mean another chance to punt for the Broncos.

A grievance against the Patriots, fought for Sauerbrun by the NFL Players Association, was heard in Boston on Tuesday by a special master. A decision is expected within a week. The meeting lasted about an hour. Sauerbrun was not present.

Last week, NFLPA general counsel Richard Berthelsen said he was confident Sauerbrun would win the appeal. The grievance is about whether the Patriots had rights of first refusal to Sauerbrun, who had signed with them in December.

The NFLPA argued that New England did not attach a

separate form along with his contract that is required in deals with rights of first refusal for unrestricted free agents.
If the 12-year veteran wins the grievance, he will be a free agent. If not, he will remain with New England. Sauerbrun agreed to a one-year contract with the Broncos on April 3, but it was matched by the Patriots. He has stated several times he wants to play for Denver again. He was cut by the Broncos last October after he served an NFL suspension for using a banned substance. He was a standout in 2005 for Denver.

Myers update

Free-agent defensive tackle Michael Myers ended his visit with Cincinnati on Tuesday without signing a contract.

He said his visit went well and he expects to talk to the Bengals more. The Bengals are looking at other defensive tackles and may want to sign one before the April 28-29 draft.

Myers could return to the Broncos. He was a starter for them in 2005 and 2006.

Lynch scholarships

The John Lynch Foundation extended the application deadline to April 27 for four scholarships it will give out. The Lynch Family Legacy Scholarships in Denver are worth $5,000 each and are awarded to high school seniors in the Denver area.
