A buddy of mine that I played ball with in high school sells sports memorabilia. He pays all these athletes thousands for private signings (Urlacher $80/sig Peyton $150/sig) and basically bs's with em for a couple hours. He always tells me stories about these guys being cool, down to earth guys or total egomaniacal jerks. He recently did a signing with Russell and went on and on about how crazy this guy was. Here is part of the conversation...

Wow. Wouldn't that be something if the Fade took him and he failed a drug test right off the bat?

However, he is smart enough not to get in trouble with the law. For now.....

It'd be great if he went to Oakland. That's thugville. Should be enough to bring out his destructive side.

Uh-huh. Call me a homer but I don't believe that. This is also the same that, for a fact, had about 22 people living in his house after Katrina, most extended family or friends. Sure, sure.

So, guys that do good deeds never mess around with recreational drugs and do stupid ****? Didn't Eugene Robinson receive a humanitarian award or somethin before he was busted for trying to nail a hooker before the soup against us. You're probably right, I just make **** up for fun.

If you've spent time around college players who are heading to the NFL, what you've posted is nothing new to be known. Not digging you, but this doesn't surprise me one bit. Good thread you've posted though.

They can draft Edwards or Stanton in round two. It wouldn't surprise me to see either one, or both, have better careers than Russell. Check out JaMarcus Russell's splits in college. His QB rating against unranked teams is well over 100, but its mediocre against top 25 teams.

That makes sense, but they have two good wr's so why not just draft the best available qb?

All I've heard regarding this is Al Davis comparing Russell to a young Elway and then talking heads comparing Russell to Elway. If Jamarcus came out of college with Leinart, Young, and Cutler... Guess where he would've drafted among QB's.

I dont think quinn will even be a top five pick, some where around 7 or 8, the fade might just take calvin but with moss and porter i see them taking russell.

Isn't that the same knock on Quinn. That he never stepped up against quality competition. If Oak had any sense they would take CJ or trade down and build their o-line like the Jets did last year.

They should trade both of those clowns for whatever they can get. I'm not convinced Russell is even the best available quarterback. I think Quinn is just as likely to have a productive career and I don't think either one of them is a top ten prospect.

Joe Thomas would be a better pick for them as well, but it would be stupid to take him over Johnson.

Jerry Porter made 1 catch the entire 2006 season. Moss caught 42 balls for 553 yards with only 3 TD's. Talking heads keep yapping about the great duo of Moss/Porter, yet they produce complete doggy dodo last season. Maybe things will change under a new HC, but to assume this great duo among talking heads is laughable. Based on talent, CJ should be #1 overall. Jamarcus is a leading candidate to be drafted #1 overall because of a weak field of QB's in the 2007 NFL draft.

Al Davis holds the number one pick in the draft. Do you think he's going to compare JaMarcus Russell to Rusty Hilger?

The talking heads are a bunch of group thinkers.

Well like slap said, maybe just dump those two and take calvin and get a better qb in the 2nd.

If I was Oakland I grab CJ they will have a chance to get a QB next year because they have lots of needs on O. Why draft a QB and get him killed. If they think Russell is a young Elway I've got to see if he can take a beating like John did early on most guys can't.

Ha! No he's not going to compare him to a 6th round pick, but the comparison to Elway is silly. Jamarcus would be #4 at best behind Young, Leinart, and Cutler. And if Quinn was to come out with that group, heck you could've possibly dropped down Russell to 5th. Weak year this year in regards to elite QB's.

Quinn produced against top competition, it just was never enough to win the games. Thats largely thanks to a defense that gave up an average of 41 points in said big games though.

I've been saying it for a while. Russell is just raw talent without the skills to make use of it. He's Dante Culpepper minus one year of college. Culpepper was very unpolished and needed time with a good QB coach in Green and behind an established veteran in Cunningham for a year. Even still he lacks a lot of the basic fundamentals a top shelf QB should have.

Meanwhile Quinn has B+ to A talent in almost every facet of his game, has learned both the WCO and Weiss' downfield passing attack in four years of college, shown the ability to make complex reads, react to coverage, and maintain poise despite heavy pressure. He's almost as NFL ready as Leinart was last year but with a lot more upside and athleticism. Some GM is going to make a move on him around pick 5 or 6 and look very smart for doing so when Quinn is adding wins to their record almost from day one.

What happened on the way to the bank with Ron Mexico? Oh yeah...the new soup de jour is Vince Young despite him having a 66 rating to Cutler's 88, more picks than TD's.

Talkin' heads are like cornerbacks, they have short memories. You think Big Hair Kiper will bring up the fact his #1 ranked player fell like a rock and played like crap last year in Mike Williams? Anyone want to take that bet? I would break his cred. He's probably filed that in the recycle bin. If I gave a sh!t, I would love to torture him about what bust (see Russell) he will pick this time.

Why would they take the Big Johnson when Moss and Porter are so damn happy in Oakland? Both are desperate to get out of there. I'm praying Crazy Al takes the next bust in Russell.

I don't buy that "transcript" as anything more than a hoax.

I would much rather have the Raiders take Russell than Quinn. I believe that Quinn will do a better job of utilizing the talent around him.

So many holes on the Raiders, it's hard to imagine what they will do. Trade for McCown, then take Calvin? Russell? Quinn?

My money is still that they take Russell. It will be interesting to see if they let him sit half the season and learn, or if they throw him out there.

BTW - I have a hard time accepting the texting thread as fact. Russell has to know how many millions ride on him staying clean right now. I call bull$hit on the texting.

As most know, my NFC team is the HornHeads...and I would be estatic if Quinn fell to 7. Their current QB's are as pathetic as Oaklands. Remember when they were saying Tuisuckopoko was the next big thing?

All Walter can is find the arms of the defense or the sidelines after yet another sack and 3 and out.

I have personal experience with athletes and coaches on the college and professional levels and know that just because your are a good athlete doesn't mean you are smart enough to stay out of trouble. If this is true just signs of things to come.
